:twisted: Yo folks - went to the Melvins gig with my friend Doctor Todd PhD, we both have great afffection for the avante garde musings of the Melvins. We entered the show pretty lit up, I was about 6 feet in front of Buzz with a clear view of Dale. I own various Melvins albums but couldn't tell you the name of any tracks, it confuses me. But they played a lot of songs I knew and pretty much stayed away from the noisy feedbacky stuff. Anyway, I've seen hundreds of bands, but the Melvins are unquestionable the heaviest band I've ever seen and Dale Crover is the worlds greatest drummer no one knows and Buzz and the bassist I cannot name sounded like the space shuttle taking off for 80 or so minutes and ran through about a dozen classics I know but cannot name. Buzz is a riff God. We all know that. Dale hits 'em harder than anyone and propelled the show forward.
BUT THEN.....Jello (fat) Biafra came out and started his cliched whining about politics and shit like that. He wore an "American Taliban" t-shirt with an image of Bush on it (yawn). First let me address how ridiculously presumptive it is on the part of Jello to assume that everyone in the room agrees with him. When he started his ranting, I noticed some subdued reactions from the crowd, which I found encouraging and the band broke into 4 tunes (some DK stuff) and I headed to the back of the club.
I think it's a mistake for the Melvins to move in this political direction, because frankly I think most folks came to the show for the typical ultra-heavy sludge of the Melvins and not Dead Kennedy's covers. IMO the show ended a great evening of crushing Melvins music with a big whiny thud.

I think as a fan you either respect the decisons of the band or you move away from them. but it is wrong to complain about jello, complain about melvins is that case, they know what jello is going to do, and by taking him along, they agree with it and wants him to do it. so in that case it is melvins who assumes that everyone agrees with THEM and so on.
i feel that they are doing the right thing, and i love a band that steps out of the expectations from their fans and do something different. for god sake the melvins have toured the us for 20 years playing sludge, what the hell, wouldn't you want to try something different for a change? and they are only doing it at the end of the show, you still get your hour of predictible sludge.
i must say, on this messageboard is the biggest collection of whiny, narrow minded, development hostile melvins fans i have seen.
and before you start complaining and whining about my grammar and obvious problems with the english language, i am aware of them and englsig is not my first languge, but i try. now complain about what i say instead.
the melvins "always" did something different.
that's why we love them.
The Melvins killed and Jello was great too. I saw him walking in and out the front door with Dale before the show, so it wasn't a surprise for me after reading about Detroit. I don't mind hearing politics at concerts if the person knows what their talking about, and clearly Jello does plus he's funny. First time at the Grog, nice club but they need a higher stage. It was easier to watch them play at the Agora.
Anyone know the setlist? I knew all the songs, can't remember the order. Tipping The Lion & The Bloat were the highlights, along with the long Pigs jam and noise-mindfuck. Night Goat was still the oldest song done. Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant was cool, first time hearing it. Bought the disc right after, along with the bloody mouth Kiss-guy shirt.
About the merch: I think it's lame that they sell the H.A.T. CD two years later paired with a new limited book. If they sold the booklet separately for $5, I'd buy it. Already have the disc, the big book, and all the 7"s - Not buying the CD again! The red Bush flyer was cool, but not worth $10, I should have snatched that one off the front door when I had the chance. Just took one of the album cover flyer instead.
I liked the show alot. I would have not gone to see the melvins if Dunn was not there. His band was amazing, and im glad i made the trip to see them. The melvins kicked ass as alwas, until Jello came on. Then it turned into a political rally. and a bunch of DK fans came out of knowwhere. I moved to the back of the room at this point. I would have loved to hear them end on a MELVINS song, but was treated to britney spears instead. :x
The end of the show was kind of a disapointment.
It was a great show and definately worth missing a whole days worth of classes at college. My hearing is still impared from the show and im shure it still is for all of you posting who have also gone to the show. Im glad to hear people besides me were bummed about jello coming on with his rambling and goofy gestures. I could have done without that definately. I loved the long play of noise with kevin beating the snot out of a long metal pole with a hammer, what a great moment. I agree that they need a higher stage at the Grog shop. I had one foot up on the stage most of the show so I wouldnt lose my balance from all the fuckers pushing eachother around. I wasnt impressed by the merchandise table when I looked at it. The zippo they had was a whopping 40 dollars. If I had extra money I would have bought it and sold it to some sap for 80. I ended up just taking one of the flyers they had on the door, which actually look pretty nice. I also would like to have taken the red poster they had on the door, but someone beat me to it. I was just gonna buy one after the show for 5 dollars, but I was so sweaty and gross with beer that drunken idiots had spilled on me I just ran out of there, couldnt even get through the crowd so I stood up on stage and walked off of the side
grog shop show was sweet. i traveled from detroit to see them again and i must say the sound was way better. trevor dunn's trio sounded so much better. i could hear trevor's genius on the bass. i really dug that group. towards the end of the show i got pushed right in front of buzz, one girl in front of me, and i remained here for the rest of the show determined not to move. so i snapped some of the greatest photos of buzz dale and jello, but unfortunetly those photos are shit now because i deleted them all on the way home. i took my camera to shoot photos for the people on this board because i know lots of you want photos. other than that, i throuroughly enjoyed seeing the melvins 2 dates in a row. i feel empty and that i have let people down by making a dumb ass mistake. shame on me.

makes sense that jello was there to wrap up the set - considering they're touring right after the lustmord colaboration cd and the Jello coloboration is out soon. considering that jello usually does 3 hour spoken word sets; i thought his preaching was very restrained. he even seemed ready to go off a bit when he made some comments about john kerry; but sorta caught himself. the new songs were cool, and even if you hate DK , that was 10 minutes of a 90+ minute show!
i would've liked to have heard a few more from jello actually - "i am the owl" would've ruled. that and an encore with just melvins doing some of the pre-atlantic shit woulda made it perfect, but still a damn good show.
