every single era of the band is pretty interesting, though in my opinion Stag,Stoner Witch and Honky got some of the most original music they ever composed. curious to hear your opinion..

Please explain 'creative'. I'm not being difficult, I'm a bit thick and I need more information. Multiple differences in musical style, overall sound?

i mean in terms of songwriting,the most original and experimental era of the band. first time i heard Honky and Stag i thought these guys were pure genius

kevin, mark d and trevor dunn eras always struck me as the most artistic/ creative side of the melvins.

Im unsure but i think im going to opt for the Kevin era. I say that somewhat biased tho being that those years saw some of my favourite Melvins albums released. I mean we had the weirdness of COD, the multifaceted Trilogy stuff, awesome HAT and POTRE too! Altho Stallion i see your point the Mark D era was pretty out there also. Having said that all the phases have had their fair share of exploration about them.

Such a difficult question to answer!


Mark D era was great for swapping instruments and playing up to three sets of totally different music.

Kevin era because of the heaviness of the albums and total psychodelia (sic) of the gigs - unbelievable energy.

Present incarnation because of the Porn/Big Biz/Melvins sets live and seeing two drummers.

Gluey through Lysol because they made me stop listening to every album I'd bought previously and sit up and pay attention.

Now waiting for them to incorporate the two tuba players from ORE into the band for a special at the Royal Albert Hall.


It may be that the several changes of lineup throughout its life has helped to keep Melvins interesting and diverse. Who knows?

though kevin and current 4-piece / lite are close...
then again everything up to mark d is great too... maybe not so freaky/creative, but songwriting wise still pretty impressive...

30yrs of melvins, and literally everything is important and mile-high above the average rock band.

Love them all for different reasons, but it's true that Texan Cowboy was a part of what I would consider to be their most experimental era.

Plus, there's so much more to see from Jared and hopefully Trevor, too.

I could have picked almost any era but went with the Lukin era because I think they laid down the foundation for almost everything they've done right from the beginning. With Lukin the created the basic sound of the band and most of what's come since is could be seen as refinements of what they did at the start.

I was torn between the Mark D and Kevin eras. I took "most creative era" as the time where the band pushed the envelope the most. Good arguments can be made for both periods but when I thought of Kevin and Hostile Ambient Takeover, Pigs Of The Roman Empire and all three Trilogy records I picked the Kevin era. While the band got just as creative during the Mark era, I felt with the Kevin era they explored more styles to a further degree. Two facemelters-HAT and Maggot, the chill no distortion ever Bootlicker, and the electronic sludge and ambiance of POTRE. Oh and I almost forgot.... 2 albums with Jello Biafra! (I personally am not a big fan of those but they are definitely a creative concept that pushes the envelope!)

Inspired me to doodle this tonight while bored at work. Got most of them ;)

Most def the years '96-'04 which means both Kevin & Mark.
I voted for Kevin, though my favorite Melvs lineup (all of them) is the Melvs with the ALMIGHTY Tejas intruder.

I voted Mark D era, but now want to change to Lorax. She brought the epic sloooooowwww to them I think (or they slowed down more during her tenure). Just my thought tho

Hmm...I'd have to say the 1983-2013 era was the most creative.

instinctively i want to say the Mark D era, just because of the sheer stylistic variety of songs on the 3 albums

I guess the current line-up has been creative in the way of putting it together, but the three records they've done are less diversified than other releases with other line-ups. Not that they're not original or whatever, but there are worlds between HAT and POTRE (as an example) in terms of inventiveness you can't find between ASA and NWB. That's how I feel about that, though I really like BB-era.

when i first read the thread i figured it was unanswerable, but tonight on my way to work i was listening to Lysol and it hit me.

the most creative era of the Melvins is now. between Bulls & Bees and Freak Puke these guys are killing it on every level. 2012 was insane for creative output for the band. B&B is an amazing and brilliant EP and Freak Puke is just a great album. putting an upright bass in the lineup with Trevor was a stroke of genius.

Buzz never runs out of creative killer riffs and Dale is a god. they get creative and wonderful musicians to play with them, like Trev and the BB boys. the fact that they can be this good this late into their career is just amazing.

Totally agree.  Not only musically but I'll add all the creative vinyl pieces (1983 vinyl especially), letterpress issues, posters etc.

A tough question this one.



For my money and time, I say the period with Mark Deutrom and the period with Kevin are the most...convincing (I will say) and demonstrable of their power. 


To speak complete truth (something I have never done)  The only fallow period is the Big Business era.


But verily, I say unto you all Big Business is a boring rock band but an interesting industry and lobby.  Ha ha ha

No...Big Business are quite good early on but by the third record have descended to the level of what my daughter terms "Shit rock".  She is a smart cookie my daughter.

We enjoy the Melvins very much up at the House.  Pre Big Business Melvins that is.  Well, to be honest, we listen to the new material also but I use my connections at the pentagon to remove Cody and Jared from the mix leaving only Buzz and Dale.

You know, I am thinking of putting together some legislation which will force Buzz and Dale to perform as a duo   possibly allowing them to play with Mark and Kevin again.  First I have to take the guns then I will focus on the Melvins.

I want to level the playing field, Glen.  I think we can all agree that there is no reason for two drummers.  Why, I even heard King  Buzzo say as much. 

Nothing against the Big Biz guys.  They are great players and all just...well CHANGE you can believe in and all that you know?

Seriously though, Malia is a good girl. :D

ive noticed people like the kevin era alot which i do too but the albums during that era he only played on h.a.t.......buzz did all the bass on ipecac trilogy.....too me thats more like the buzz bass era...........................as much as i like new line up and trever i do miss mark d......he did add something different to the mix that i think complimented buzzo well.....i like the two drummer combo and i do think they need it....especially live its tremendous to see and as they keep experimenting with the 2 drummers you notice fills and beats are being played differently yet in time, its a beautiful to hear and watch

This is the first Ive ever heard of this. Why is Kevin credited then? Maggot says both him and Buzz play bass but Bootlicker says only Kevin Plays bass. Don't forget Pig Of The Roman Empire, even tho there are lots of haters out there it's still a cool album to me!

Did not Kev play on the Jello albums, too? 

Unless I'm wrong, Buzz played on Houdini (though Lori credited) not the trilogy.  Kevin played on the trilogy. 

Kevin definitely played on the trilogy. He's on Sieg Howdy! as himself and Never Breathe What You Can't See, but credited as 'George W. McVeigh.'

Yes. I think.... but Lori is credited. Billy Anderson played a few tracks. Hag Me and Teet.

I don't think one era is more creative than others. I think that a lot of people have this notion that what the Melvins are doing now is some how "less creative". This is bullshit. These people have their favorite era. They wrongly assume that their favorite era is the most "creative" because it's their favorite. They are wrong.

The Big Melvins albums are crazy shit but somehow, this is flying under the radar. I was listening to A Senile Animal lately and that is one crazy beast. The vocal melodies going on in there is some real "creative" shit. When exactly have they ever done anything like that before? Nude With Boots is ALL OVER THE PLACE. The same could be said of Bulls and Bees.

As Buzz said on many occasions he and the Melvins are very much "what have you done for me lately?"

What's the most creative era of the Melvins? NOW. There is no past. There is no future. There is just the present. Melvins have three lineups going currently. THREE DIFFERENT LINEUPS. A jazzy oriented lineup that freely revisits the past while pushing the boundaries of the melvins sound. A stripped down, minimalist lineup that celebrates their origins and a four headed monster that plows ahead not looking back.

It boggles my mind why so many "fans" seem to be so stuck up in the past. I don't understand how you can be a fan of the Melvins and be "bored" with whatever they're coming up with in the present.

It's fine to have a favorite era but to suggest that one era is more "creative" than an other is to miss the point entirely.

Simply because some people can be.

I like all eras but my favorite one is with Kevin, that doesn't mean I don't like the things they're doing nowadays but HAT is still my #1 Melvins album of all time.
