Mine would definately be a rejoining of Joe Preston, Dale and Buzz. I love the duo shouting between Buzz and Joe, Joe also has a presence on stage.
Joe is a shmoe.
Viva La Rutabega rottenhaus!
Buzz, Kevin and Dale.
For the live show, i'd go with Rutmanis....for the studio recording aspect I'd say Deutrom.

I think you nailed it...almost. Mark was probably the best technically and had a hint of "twang" in his playing that was unique. Kevin had that distinct noise but to contrast could also sound very clear and clean, for lack of better words. Think of The fool, the meddling idiot vs Lone rose holding now...2 of his best and 2 completely different sounds.
Verdict...undecided
Kevin is best live, no brainer.
I'll go for the next one......that is, the next yet unknown one. Anyone, after Jared & Trevor.
So far ALL bassplayers were at least good and all of them represent a certain period. They all had their strong points altough I think these 4 are/were the best (in no particular order):
- Deutrom is a true artist/musician (just have a listen to his brilliant solo albums) but I think to good to be 'just a bassplayer' and not being at the steeringwheel
- Kevin is not the tightest bassplayer and a poor backing vocalist but the most energetic and visually the most interesting of all. But where is he in the here and now creatively without Buzz and Dale?
- Jared is tight and can do vocals really well (even leadvocals!)
- Dunn to me is just AMAZING I think he is the most complete one of all. He can sing, write, do different techniques and is visually interesting
But it's the continuous development that make the Melvins the Melvins. To me ANY period is interesting so I'll go with the next one. Undoubtedly. Can't wait for him/her.
Ouch, I seriously like every bass player and what they did with Melvins, hard choice : as aforesaid, all periods is interesting. And I agree with :

And I add that the Fool... is in my top 5
As a Mr Bungle/Fantomas listener, I wanna say that Dunn is awesome in everything he does, but I want to hear him with an electric bass too with the Melvins haha.

Lorax was the most dangerous, gave the band an edge.
Buzz,Dale and Mark D obvioulsy
All of the three pieces were great. Which one is best? That's like asking, what do you like better, sex or cocaine?

buzz-dale-kev was the FUCK YOU era of MELVINS. I think my choice is obvious.
This is a really tough one! ](*,) I've seen them with 5 different bassists; Mark D, Kevin, Jared, Trevor (stand-up), Pinkus. They all did a great job, and brought a lot to the table, so to speak. :-k I agree that Mark was the best in studio. Atlantic Era is my favorite. Kevin was really awesome live. But I think I've got to give it to Trevor, for the Melvins Lite tour. That was quite a spectacle.
buzz dale kevin

for me too, please. :P
I think everyone who played with them did a good job!
But if I had to choose my favourite three-piece...that´s difficult.
I´d go with Preston, Mark or Kevin.
