Guess this was publicised only recently as I haven't noticed it before; some interesting tidbits here:

BO: The next album for us is already in the can and will come out in October. The line up this time is me, Dale and Mike Dillard. It's Melvins 1983, but it's new songs. It also includes the 4 song 1983 Melvins EP we did last year, and American Cow, and Dr. Mule. The rest of the album consists of new songs that no one has heard at all yet. It's a fine album and I'm really proud of it. I'm glad we could do this with Mike
How did the interviewer get "Melvins Teenage Dream" out of " Melvins 83"? I have to assume that's what happened there.

I hoped it was Buzz goofing around. Remember the Metal Polishers? :)

I can see how (although you'd have to be at least half deaf for this):
Melvins nine

Amusing.
What piqued my interest the most was how he said recording Stag was a hard time. That might possibly be my favorite, or near my favorite Melvins album, and I would be most interested to hear about its recording.
Mark D was being a 'prick' at the time.
Mark D was being a genius at the time.
Maybe that scared Buzz??????
Awesome interview-lots of interesting stuff there. Stag is amazing. If they ever play another album live, they should do Stag. :)
I love Stag for the sheer variety it has.

Probably the amount of experimenting they were doing.. They have said that they brought every instrument they could carry into the studio.

=D>
Mark D is indeed a genius. With his musical education and production experience he had before he even joined the Melvins - I would guess that he and Buzz butted heads many times on musical direction and band direction with Melvins. I have read that as soon as Mark wanted to start "shopping demos" after they left Atlantic, that was really the last straw for Buzz. Mark D was involved with the Melvins as early as Gluey Porch Treatments so I imagine he felt perhaps too much "ownership" on something that really belongs to Buzz and Dale.
Regardless, I wish he and Buzz and Dale were still friends. Would love to see him come back into the fold at some point. I am really looking forward to the next Mark D record.
I never understood all the boners for Mark D. A lot of fans seem to make assumptions regarding his contributions to the Melvins without knowing all the ins and outs. It's all just conjecture, man.
Really excited about the movie. Interested to see how they will release/distribute it. My guess is that it'll be largely ignored by more common avenues like festivals and shit. I bet they turn it up to 11.

All you have to do is listen to the bass playing and guitar playing on Stoner Witch. He is a very studied and stellar musician. You can hear in his playing and his own songwriting. Personally, I get a boner for all the different bass players and different eras of this band. They all bring the right thing, a different thing at the right time.

don't forget stag and honky.
I've always gotten the impression that Buzz writes in the style of whoever joins the band. Mark D is a phenomenal bassist and song writier but the writing credits seem to confirm my impression.

exactly.

You do not actually "play" music - do you? I mean beyond just jamming in your room on a shitty guitar through a shitty amp?
no, I don't actually "play" music. I'm assuming this keeps me from a level of understanding which you happen to possess?
It does. But that's cool.
Regardless, you are wise enough to be down with the Melvins!

So you have to be an artist to have an opinion on a painting? Or a weatherman to appreciate a sunset? Gtfo

Did not say that and do not believe that. Everyone has opinions on what they like and why they like it. Those opinions can be formed by many things. In the case of music - there ARE things that someone with an understanding of music (playing, technique, theory etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.) WILL appreciate and notice that those without that understanding may not notice. And that is totally cool (And why I dropped the subject in the case of Mark D and his contributions to the Melvins).
The same would go for just about anything else - for example - a chef will notice things and possibly appreciate or NOT appreciate aspects of a fine meal that a non-chef may not notice or appreciate. It doesn't mean that the non-chef's opinion is not relevant, it just means that is informed differently.
There are aspects of Mark D's playing, production and composition that are unique to him when compared to other players in the Melvins (same with Dale, same with Buzz, same with Kevin etc. etc.) Whether someone likes it or not, or notices is completely up to them. And there opinion is totally relevant. I was curious as to what was informing the opinion. These things of course can also be noticed by a non-musician and even though they may not understand WHY it is they may like something or not like something - it is still relevant towards forming their opinion.
If there were not these unique aspects to a musician any joker could play bass for the Melvins. Just note that there are reasons why Trevor and Mark sound different in their playing than Matt or Lorax. All of their bass players have been great in my opinion and have contributed to the music exactly what was needed when it was needed.
you don't have to play music to notice how influential mark d was for the sound of the band in that era.still cool to share different opinions though

Mr Blonde: I bet you're a big Joe Preston fan aren't you?
What I want to know is WHY would someone NOT have a boner for Mark D. Anyone? Anyone?

I've always thought that Mark laid the groundwork for the more "accomplished" bass players, take Mark out of it and look at the bass players before and after. Matt, Joe, Lorax vs. Kevin, Jared, Trevor? No contest. Mark opened the doors in my shitty fucking goddamn opinion.
Mark D plays on HONKY, my Most favourite Melvins Record.
