I hate to be the bearer of this news, but my/our longtime friend and board member passed away this morning after battling cancer.
Anyone that knew Bret knew he was a huge Melvins fan, and always right up in front of Buzz at any show he could make it to. Fan would be an understatement really, he was downright insanely enthusiastic about the band. Seeing him at a show and his excitement, you'd think every show was his first. I have known him pretty much since my first year on this board and always saw him at northwest shows. He was a damn good guy and I'm gonna miss him.
**I realize this isn't "Melvins" news, but Bret is pretty much an original to this board and many an old head here will know who he was. He deserves to have a thread here under Melvins discussion.
RIP Smellis.

So very sad. I used to have many great philosophical PM's with him.
The only thing that meant more to him then Melvins was his family.
He'll never be forgotten.

I didn't remember Smellis but somehow I do remember this photo, R.I.P.
I will never understand why the good ones are taken from this world so soon. Smellis was a stand up guy, never heard anything bad about him on the board. Had the awesome opportunity to meet him at the 25th Anniversary show. Cheers to Smellis! May the Melvins dedicate a song in his honor during this upcoming tour!!

He never had a beef with anyone on here. I don't know how many of us can say that. He was a pure family man and Melvins fan.
I'd seen Bret post on idles FB page many times but didn't know it was smellis or I would have added him. Fucking shame, dude was spot on.
This is so sad. I hope that he didn't have to suffer too much at the end.
I never met him on here, but he was a great guy.

Awful news. Cancer is gay.
Sounds like a really great guy. I wish I had gotten to know him. What a shame. :(
Nothing but good vibes and happy thoughts to him and his family.
 Hoooolllleee shit! This is a bummer. I'm glad I at least had the pleasure of meeting him. I would just echo what everyone else has to say about him, but damn. What a great dude and a fucking weirdo too (I mean that in the best way). His enthusiasm was infectious and I have no doubt the rest of us will continue to carry that flag. At least he's done suffering. Fuck whatta bummer.
RIP smellis.
I didn“t know him but I just read some of his posts and he seemed to be a very funny guy...and cancer...a close friend of my dad died of cancer some weeks ago after battling it for 8 years.
Cancer is really fucked up. I hate it.
Damn, this is really sad. :( He was a regular on this board for a long time. R.I.P Smellis
RIP Smellis. Sorry to hear this, he was a good dude, my thoughts go out to his family. I know he was down with the Melvins from early on, pretty sure he was involved with the Melvan at one point or another on here. He was a young dude, too young to die anyway.
RIP Smellis. :(
There's a rather nice obituary for Bret here:
http://www.obitsforlife.com/obituary/971834/Ellis-Bret.php
"Bret was an enthusiastic supporter of Melvins, an influential rock band with roots in Grays Harbor. Bret traveled to countless shows up and down the west coast over the past 25 years."

Quick clip with Smellis.
Off to greener pastures. My condolences to his friends and family. Please don't forget to reserve him a spot upfront when you go to see Melvins...
Damn! It's been a year. :(

Smellis? That's shocking and terrible, I remember him as a super lad, then suddenly he wasn't much around anymore. R.I.P. My heart goes of to his wife and children.
