Title: Melvins bass sound
Post by: black stallion on November 02, 2014, 05:32:24 AM
just watched a video from '94 with Mark D, noticed he didn't seem to use any pedal effect with his Precision bass. just clean sound!

you can tell each Melvins bassist got his own bass tone...get Pinkus for example, he's got a totally different sound than Jared

btw, if you had to tell who is your favourite bassist depending on the sound/tone, who would you pick?

Box-boy knows! ^   plus Gene also leads in pyrotechnics and sexual conquests.  :P
Back to reality, I voted Mark D. Could have also gone with Kevin.
There is no wrong answer.
I don't find any of them to have a bad bass tone.
That wouldn't be approved of by the front office (Buzz and Dale).
I was a little shocked by Trevor's tone, if not overall level, when I first heard Freak Puke.
It sounded like the Melvins were playing in a studio, and the bass from a incredibly loud
car stereo was bleeding through the wall
(just happened to sync up with what they were playing, too). Weird!
I got used to it. I mean, what is it supposed to sound like with an upright bass?
I'm just glad I've never heard the Melvins with the insipid bass tone that is now on
90% of my radio dial (including "alternative", country(wtf?!), hip-hop and r&b....)!  #-o

Yes. I just thought the level would have been a little higher on the album.
It doesn't really punch. It just provides a counter-melody.
Like I said, I got used to it, and the material was so damned great that I listened to it
every day for about four months.

I agree with this word for word. Except for the words I deleted. Cool experiment but would have been over the top with an electric bass.

Simple. Just hop in your time machine and go to show #1 in Anchorage, Alaska or show #51 in
Honolulu, Hawaii. Trevor played electric bass at those shows, since they had no intentions of flying the upright to those locations.

I think the best bass sound ever would be Mark D on the Stoner Witch album (although there is some King B bass on there too!). A Precision Bass played with a pick just sounds bad ass.

My least favorite bass sound ever would be Lorax on Ozma. I do not blame that on Lorax though - I blame it on Josh Roberts who engineered the album (and absolutely HATED HATED HATED working with the Melvins).

As far as live I like Jared's tone a ton - you can really hear him in the mix. I like the Pinkus sound the least - I find he gets lost in the mix.

Joe on Lysol
Mark on Stoner Witch
Kevin on H.A.T.
Pinkus on Hold It In

Overall Kevin hands down out sounds them all.

I think are getting confused with the bassist v the bass lines v the tone
I am a bassist. Love the bass but I'm still leaning with voting Jared. I think Kevin is a close second but I can't be too sure of mark or buzz coming in.
Meez, I'll have my vote in by midnight pacific time.

Theyre all really good. Mark D was the most talented, he is mean on the guitar too and was a huge influence on clean melvins. Kevin was a perfect Melvin and most of HAT is Kevin enough said, Joes bass is  a religious experience when listening to Lysol and Jared is a bulldozer but is also quite eclectic in his approach. Lori I can't really tell because the mixing is terrible but overall for all those reasons mainly they're all good. I'm playing Switzerland on this one.

Oh yeah and Dunn is Dunn and Pinkus is really early on but its one thick delicious sounding bass!

anyway, Its Jared.

If we're just talking TONE, kevin has that one locked down. He had a great distorted/ overdrive sound and was really quite good at using other effects plus the slide and whatever twisted overdrive he uses on the maggot... just amazing . He proved that on bootlicker he can also dial it back and keep it smooth and thumping. His custom bass from erics guitars is something special too.
additional thoughts on the others:

Joe prestons bass sound on lysol is very satisfying. it's got so much low end yet has a nice clarity to it. just a really big sound from him on that album.

Mark D also had an awesome tone. I would describe his overall tone as pretty similar to your classic P bass tone. Im a sucker for that kind of sound.

Jared can get a pretty tight overdrive/distortion bass sound on some songs. It's hard to find bassists who can get a good overdriven tone. All pedals I have tried sound trashy and thin or too muddy and broken up. I am picky when it comes to distortion on bass.

I stand by my vote of jared. After listening to the title track Nude With Boots and hearing jared grooving along on his bass while his singing cuts through the mix blending perfectly with buzz's voice I have no other option but to conclude that Jared is indeed my favorite bassist. Coming in a close tie with kevin and mark

I agree with the first half but proves to me that no one is unbasis.
Jared has the best tone. Even though I voted buzzo becuzzo he has probably more to do with the bass tone and recording than we give him credit for.
But Mark and Kevin are my favorite bass players?
How could I think of such a thing?

scott stone had a good bass sound, but it was his performance that stood out most for me.
