welp, the online preview came out today for preorderers...
i have to say track six has a bit of tool to it... regardless of who influenced who in the scenario... having said that, the next track reminds me of patton to some degree...
thats really all i wanted to say for now. just trying to wet some appetites.
and spoiler alert.....
we get to hear crover do blast beats.... never thought that would happen... unless i just missed something
Enjoying....

Mine came yesterday. Bassheads will be pleased with this release, the low end is great. The drums sound great. Not every song is a winner, but this does feel like a collaboration album, not a Melvins album with a guest. Limited Teeth and Bummer Conversation melted my face, but my two favorite tracks were Dead Pile and Dead Canaries. They both have a nice, creepy vibe.
Best part of the album? The production. It was nice to hear new material under a different producer. I like Toshi/Melvins production, but all Melvins since 2002 have been recorded by Toshi, so there is a certain "sameness" to the overall sound of their records. This was a nice change for the ears.
First review isn't too hot:

The guy is entitled to his opinion but saying, "the Melvins made people wait nearly two decades for an album" makes it sound like Chinese Democracy. I was under the impression most of us thought the whole thing was cancelled and we'd get the demos at some point on a boxset of unreleased material.

I agree to an extent. I really like the production on The Maggot but here...it's hard to explain. To me it's almost like the production job wasn't finished or something. The album sounds unlistenable through certain speakers around my apartment. Through my Bose headphones it still sounds...lacking in some way.
Toshi does a fine job but I would like to hear someone else every other record just to mix it up a bit.

daddy like
Yeah and straight up Double Kicks too but sounds like it was done as a deliberate cliche.. he will never be like any other drummer for the very reason he does not employ these techniques.
hey I've got a question... why couldn't dead canaries have been about 20 minutes longer?

I remember you saying the exact same thing about 'Holy Barbarians' on Freak Puke.
put me down for another 20 minutes of the end of Foaming and a solid 25 of the end of We Are Doomed. sometimes MELVINS find a groove that they could ride endlessly. MELVINS magic at work.
What do you mean only sometimes? :P
Got my hands on the cd first yesterda and after spinning it on the car stereo back and forth from work the verdict is, I`m stoked, the best record sine Lustmord. Melvins as they shall be, weird, inventive, strange and dangerous. A masterpiece.
This is a truly great release. Would love more like this.

Its got a Great amount of Godheadsilo in the recording, you should listen to them more!
Lyrically, this is my favorite Melvins album
"This used to be the future, but now it's just shit."
"I don't like your kids but you do!"

This album is just so much icing on the cake. It gets better with every listen and we already got all that great stuff from that era to begin with.

That's true. I still don't really class it as a masterpiece or anything like that but it's a good record. An interesting record in their discography, existing a bit like how 'You Know You're Right' does as a posthumously released Nirvana song. I'd say perhaps Three Men And A Baby gets a 8/10 from me. Which is very surprising because on my first few listens i wouldn't have gone above a 5.
I wonder if you play this album along with the Ted Danson movie, if it lines up like Pink Floyd and the wizard of oz?
Getting more into "A Dead Pile Of Worthless Junk." :buzz:
is this album underrated? possibly yes. it's really weird

It is the Melvins album i always forget about! I wish it had came out when it was recorded. For me it acts as a really strange call back whilst sitting in among their recent releases.
What's the moment on this record you all wait for most? Mine is the crowd noise with Mike's non-sequitors, forget which track.
my favourite track is probably Bummer Conversation. man, Dale Crover is everywhere on that song

i think you're right. it shows how different (better) Melvins album production used to be back in the days. especially drums

The Internet says this album was supposed to be '99. Anyone know whether it originally would have come out before, after, or during the trilogy?

After. The Maggot was released in May 99, and recording only started on this one sometime that year.
"These are the facts we can be sure of: in 1998, around the time his band godheadSilo went on hiatus, bassist/vocalist Mike Kunka busied himself by tagging along on a tour with his friends the Melvins. Somewhere along the way, Mike and the Melvins – King Buzzo (guitar/bass/vocals), Dale Crover (drums/vocals), and Kevin Rutmanis (bass/vocals), at the time – decided to make a record together, and gave the project the imaginative moniker Mike and the Melvins. Sub Pop, ever on the hunt for music's Next Big Thing, enthusiastically agreed to fund and release the super-group's debut, and recording commenced sometime in 1999."
A friend in need is a friend you don't need. :o
