Once Dad bought these new bookshelf speakers, took him a while to set them up one Saturday morning. The hardest part was that he had to thread the cables behind some shelving and the TV, which was difficult because it was one of those heavy plasma TVs on the wall so it made everything really difficult to get to. After like an hour or so, he was proud that he finished it.
This was over 10 years ago mind you, so he grabbed the first thing he could find to test out these new speakers which happened to be my B&W iPod. He hooked it up and without looking pressed play and waited to see what his new system could do.
Nothing really happened except for a weird tone. That's what it sounded like to him but to me it was also known as the intro to Manky. Dad thought his amp was fucked. Completely fucked like he had somehow either blown it or he had some poor quality cabling. Couldn't work it out either way. Never seen a guy so confused before. When the Manky tone started fading out he thought the whole thing was just completely gone at this point. For some reason, honestly, he decided the only thing left to do was to turn up the volume LOUD at to which point the guitars kicked in as the same time as I laughed and he set a record for jumping the highest from a crouching position. Almost blew his speakers. LOL. Another classic moment in time brought to you by the Melvins.
I bought Stag the day it came out and returned home to listen to it promptly. My sister was having one of her little 3 - 5 person parties that tended to attract the cops and there was some new guy there. A big fat black guy, for the record. I went to put the CD on the boombox on our back patio and he inquired who I was about to play. I told him the new Melvins album and he asked what they were like. At that point, my whole experience with the band's catalogue was that I bought Prick first and hated it, bought Stoner Witch and loved it. I did know that I had seen the Kiss style solo albums, so I said " I don't know how to describe them, but they really love KISS". he said "ok?" Like, here we go.....lame. he then proceeded to be ear fucked by the greatest band in the world and one of their weirdest albums ever while we pulled some bong hits and slammed some beers. I'm sure they had to leave to get away from me, but I wonder what they really thought. :-k :D

did he plug your sister?
Sorry Meez but that shit was funny ... I'm still smiling ... the use of "plug" as a fornication descriptor cinched it.

Nah, my Mom.
shoulda been your retort ... that woulda kept the chuckles coming hard
As for classic Melvins moments ... when Eletro dropped I was listening to it ... Tipping The Lion came on and my roommate was perplexed by the high pitched buzz in it ... he thought the TV was on or something ... when I explained to him it was part of the song he just looked at my quizzically and bewildered ... WTF!? or something to that effect was his confused reply ... perfect moment right there ... you either get it or don't.
Yeah, agreed. You do get it or you dont. Can see how it can be too weird for some.
When I first got stag, I played it in the car (mid 2000s). Was giving my brother a lift somewhere at the time. The CD was on random and first song was skin horse. As soon as the second half kicked in with the high pitched vocals - without a word he just reached up and turned it off full knowing how much I HAD just bought the damn thing and was listening to it for the very first time.

yeah my bud's favorite band was Tool so I thought I might be able to twist him ... he dug the more "rock" kinda stuff ... Queen and tunes like that ... but that's about it. I also got COD at that time and that totally flipped his lid ...
Weirdly enough we were living in 'Straylia at the time ... I took him to see Fantomas in Sydney (Dir. Cut tour) ... next day standing in the kitchen another roomie asked him how it was ... he reached out and started turning the blender on and off whilst screaming gibberish at it ... "Kinda like that" he said.

Arriving late to their set during the white zombie tour, i leaned over to the redneck sitting next to us and asked him how long the melvins had been playing. "Too long" he said.

Gold.
Also the more I think of it, Fantomas does sound like someone yelling at a broken blender.

Yeah he's a card alright
It was pretty fuckin' funny ... I may have spit my beverage across the room in hysterics I can't quite recall. Tho he exacted his revenge when he took me to a Tool show a in Sydney. Zzzzzzz ...
That moment when I realized that only one side out of six was 33rpm, not all of them. (solo eps)
Earlier this year, I went to see the Imperial Death March Tour with friends in Minneapolis. Neither friend, a married couple who I've been friends with for about a decade, were overly familiar with any of the groups, but I was in a bit of a bind since a friend of mine had a temporary job of hers fuck up and send her plane ticket a week early, which meant she couldn't come (and she couldn't pay for her half of rooms, rental car, etc.). Those two friends stepped up and offered to drive me there (which allowed me to not have to pay for a rental car), but I still felt a bit bad knowing they might hate every single band on the bill.
So, we're at the show. First goofy thing that happens is my friend leans over and tells me "I expected Napalm Death to be less melodic, they're pretty good!" during the Melvins set (thanks to weird parking conditions, we missed Melt-Banana altogether, which they apologized for 37 times). I guess because the tour had ND's banner during everybody's set, plus my attendance was largely for the Melvins (although I do like ND a lot, and I enjoy Melt-Banana). I explain to her that we're watching the Melvins at that moment, which starts the apologizing again, because she figures due to my interest being primarily in the Melvins, that must mean we missed Napalm Death. She has assumed they are the headliners. Then, when Shane Embury comes out to play a song with the Melvins, she exclaims to me "Is that Murderface?!?!?", which I never considered but admitted there was definitely a passing resemblance, although personally, I think his hair reminds me more of the brown dog guy (Sam?) from the Electric Teeth band from the Muppets. Then, when ND take the stage, Barney charms the fuck out of my friends with his accent and super polite demeanor. And then, introduces a replacement guitarist, who he assures us "Despite the hairstyle, this man is not a juggalo". Which got a pretty big collective laugh from the crowd and our group. Unfortunately, it was standing room only and my leg had been bothering me the whole day and only got worse by the time ND took the stage. I stayed for about 5-6 songs and then we bailed. And ordered pizza from a Gaelic/Irish themed place which was really fucking good. Quite the evening, full of confusion, amusement, and a really strong set by the Melvins.
