Glen what happened?
Show was shutdown by the cops right after Onions. over capacity. it was STUPID packed.
cops were crawling all over the place when they quite rudely told everyone to get out.
if there's any good news here at least the air conditioning held up.
more later when I get my head on straight.
ok so...
firstly that setlist grabs you by the fucking throat. Oven turned the place into an absolute melee.
tangent: I'd be lying if I didn't say I spent a few moments reflecting on a dear friend lost when they played Anaconda. you probably won't be surprised to hear that was Brad's all time favorite MELVINS song. it was an emotional moment whether MELVINS knew it or not. once again I say CONDA FOREVER
from there..
I'm liking El Club so far. but also having interesting experiences every time. I had a feeling they had a few too many bodies in there when I was taking elbows on all sides and had some headbanger's hair about .5 inches off my nose. it was way too overcrowded and people just kept trying to squeeze into the performance room (it is separate from the bar area) and making it tighter and tighter and tighter. there was zero space. and that zero space kept shrinking as people kept piling in. a dude and his GF squeezed between me and headbanger and I leaned forward (the whole 2 millimeters it took to get to his ear) and said "seriously?!?!?". he looked back at me and moved to someone else's grille. MELVINS were mashing there way through it. They got to Onions and I knew it was winding down but the cheater setlist told me 2 more songs. then dale stood up and dropped his sticks and they walked off. there was some brief confusion and then a cop took the stage and said "EVERYONE OUT!!!" (some girl yelled back "FUCK YOU!!" lol). so we started hearding out confused as shit. the rumblings in the crowd told me the building was over capacity but that was obvious. there were about 10 cops in the place and about 15 outside. they wouldn't let anyone go anywhere but out so I was denied a closing trip to the merch table (sorry julesy!!). the poster was killer but I got fucked out of getting it. then the cops had the main road back to the highway blocked so my gps took me through the bowels of Detroit neighborhoods for about 20 minutes. I was scared, I admit it.
on a good note.. the sound in El Club is amazing. after that last Imperial Death March debacle at the Majestic Theatre that left me with permanent hearing damage this was a refreshing change. loud.. but not so loud you can't say "seriously?!?!" in someone's ear. and clean. great place to see a band but weird shit keeps happening to me there.
EGO the living planet sighting (old member here). he did not recognize me with my new beard of justice.
My first ever of hopefully many Melvins shows last night. POWERFUL. was supremely bummed it got cut short. But also stunned by MAJESTY. They sounded absolutely monolithic. Sacrifice is a fucking otherworldly opener. Very insane Energies. Edgar the Elephant was my other favorite of the night, this could be a Melvins classic, and it mellowed the place out for a merciful few minutes. sounded like NOBODY made any noise after edgar. though (except me and I'm sure someone else lol) some real galoots in the crowd. booth was cash only so I couldn't get anything even though I tried for a bunch of CDs and vinyl. THANK YOU MELVINS.
Also who was the opening band? They're real good.

*phew* When I saw your post on FB that it got shutdown because of the venue being over capacity I assumed you didn't even get a chance to see any of the show. I am honestly surprised that DPD actually took the time to shut a concert down. How the hell did they even know venue was over capacity?
Off topic: Is it me, or does this set seem to fly by? It was sooo good but it seemed like I blinked my eyes at the GR show and it was over.

I'm guessing either one cop just poked in to see what was up at the local trouble maker holligan punk rock club and jammed the panic button when he saw all the people. either that or the traffic and parking which was horrendous got their attention. there were a lot of cops there like as if they expected civil unrest when they shut it down. come on... we're MELVINS fans. peace, love and SATAN, ya know?
El Club replied to a comment on Facebook and said that someone called 911 from inside the club. Real nice. I also felt the set flew by big time. I like El Club - great sound, atmosphere, beer selection/prices - just wish Melvins would play somewhere slightly larger in Detroit.

I figured it was something like that.
Lame.
Holy shit, that's fucked, at least you got about 3/4 of a show. Bummer that you didn't get to hit the merch table after. Can't say I've ever been to a show where the cops shut it down.
I would have been LIVID if I drove out just for this show
I mean, I miss my family and stuff too, but :-#
Glen, buddy, sorry this happened
Not fair at all
But I am sure the set was still killer for what it was :)

The majestic would be probably be a good place
I moved away after el club was built so I haven't been there. I have heard nothing but great things so this is disappointing to read. Sounds like management made a mistake, or a stupid person dialed 911 - either way, sucks big
the ornery old geezer in me wants to bring up the fact that I took the time and effort to buy an advanced ticket so I could be sure I had at least a reasonable amount of space only to get totally fucked out of that space so they could squeeze a few more dollars out of it.
so lets see now..
that's ONE MELVINS show that I bought tickets for that never happened and I was never offered a refund for: 6/17/15
they told me to hold my tickets and they would be honored at a later date. so.. like... when exactly... ????
and now one show that I only got 3/4 of although I paid full price for due to circumstances not of my control.
the way I see it somebody owes me 1 and 1/4 MELVINS shows.
breath hold beginning.... NOW!!
I hate shit like that, and venues pulling that kind of crap. I used to enjoy the Jon Henroids Melvins shows when they let us stand along the balcony leading to the stage. Great place to observe the crowd and like 4' from where Buzzo always stood. Nice little rail to set your drink on....then they decided no balcony, so then next show I'm down in the pit with the fat hairy sweaty smelly moshers. Fuck. I finally shoved one so far and hard that they left me a little space for the rest of the show.

I'm guessing it was to report a stolen elbow room.
ZING!!
hi julesy!

Make it to Colorado and I'll put you up, buy your ticket, and we can both yell"I know Ryan" from the front of the crowd.
I did indeed fail to recognize said Beard Of Justice. Wish you said something. It was a fucked up week and my head is a mess. Had a great tine anyway. I managed to sneak over to the merchant table anyway. Next time, Glen. We shall raise a glass!
