Title: Memphis, May 23, 2018
Post by: Rusty Shackleford on May 24, 2018, 11:59:40 AM
The boys killed it last night.  First time at the Hi Tone for me.  It was tiny in there on stage.  I was the closest in front, inches from Buzz and Steven all night.  Me and Buzz were head banging and almost hitting heads...  Amazing energy from the band.  True inspirations.  Heard some cool stuff in sound check, standouts were Honky Tonk Women and Thank You by ZZ TOP.  The bass...

I liked the OZMA shirt so much I had to get two...

They played a lot during sound check.  Usually it's a song and a half or so.  They did most of evil new war god, god of thunder, Edgar (I think), kicking machine, those other two, and some more bits.  Perhaps their engineer needed more time than usual to dial things in...

I like hearing Buzz's take on Billy and Keith's parts.  Dale's groove and interpretation is always interesting too.  By the last chorus, I Thank You turned into I Fucked You.  They need more TOP covers...

Would have loved to hear that sound check. BTW, who is running the board this tour? I didn't notice or see/hear anything about Kurt Schlegel as of late. He was back on deck last year, the tour w/ Spotlights. Sound was good this year show I saw regardless.

It was a good one.  Man they still own that God of Thunder riff, and this lineup playing it with Buzz bellowing over the top and then everybody in the chorus is the way that one should be.

Did they speed it up (God of Thunder), compared to the following version?

Yep, would have loved to hear it.

Honky Tonk Women and Thank You by ZZ TOP.
Two tracks for future album appearances possibly?

One of their very best covers IMO.

Kurt was definitely w/ Melvins on last summer's tour. He was on the road w/ Jello & GSM the year before that also running the board. I said hi and thanked him for the job well done both times.
Moss? Mike Patton stole him away.  Moss didn't run sound, just managed stage setup/teardown, and tech'd Buzz's gear. Last time I saw him w/ Melvins was 2008. By 2010, Anthony from Totimoshi/now All Souls was tour manager guy for that one tour.
