Title: Plan D - Toshi, Dale, Coady, etc
Post by: jules on March 11, 2020, 10:42:39 AM
From JN:

Today we'd like to introduce to you, one of the weirder projects we've been working on: Toshi Kasai - Plan D

The legendary recording engineer & producer, Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Big Business), has enlisted the best drummers in the world for his "source material", thus making Plan D one of the most unique projects in modern music.

From his LA studio, Toshi created a complex drum-triggering system which is the catalyst for Plan D. He then spent the last several years luring drummers into his Sound of Sirens studio, letting them go nuts behind the kit. Meanwhile, Toshi has been behind the board, capturing the signal from each drum hit, and sending that signal to a variety of analog synthesizers. The result is some of the craziest sounding prog-like instrumental music you're likely to ever hear.

Plan D is an ongoing project, with four different EPs being released throughout 2020. The first 12" EP (& part 1 in the series) is "SW" and ships in April with the digital download sent instantly. Part 1 features the following drummers:

Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross, Nirvana, Hew Time)
Coady Willis (Big Business, Melvins, The Murder City Devils, Hew Time)
Clem Burke (Blondie, Eurythmics)
Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden)
Joe Plummer (Mister Heavenly, Cold War Kids, The Shins, Hew Time)
Paul Christensen (Qui, hepa.Titus)
Troy Zeigler (Serj Tankian, Juliette Lewis, Buckethead)

More amazing drummers will be featured in the successive volumes of Plan D.

I just listened to my tape of it but I still need to incorporate the 3 7" bonus discs into the mix.

Funny how that bit at the end of the video does actually sound like a Big Business song!! Quite clearly that is Coady playing there too. Such a distinctive quality to his playing.

From JN:

First off, thank you for being so patient about this whole project. When we announced Plan D as a year-long project this past March, we could have never foreseen the fuckstorm that 2020 would become... Covid basically made it impossible for Toshi to have people in his studio for a long while, which substantially delayed the final two EPs from being recorded.

HOWEVER, we are pleased to report that the vinyl copies of EPs 3 and 4 just landed, and we are preparing to ship them to you now. PLUS we have the downloads of these albums available to you immediately. "SE" and "NW" both feature a new cast of drummers (including Dave Lombardo from motherfuckin' SLAYER!).

$50 annual subscription +$80 for the EPs. And I'm still going to download the wav and burn two CDrs. I'm with you, Meeze, just put it on a CD.

I do get to grab uncompressed versions of some albums I missed ordering physical. So that's cool. Deerhoof, TFS, Rob Crow, No Joy. I'm pretty happy about the subscription overall.

I am really happy I got this. Sure, some of the synth sounds are a bit wacky and some of the composition is Toshi's style of dodecophany. But there are moments of true glory.

Titles that stick out on the first listening:
Golden Voyage
Reverse a Curse
War Dance
Encounter in the Valley
Sundown, Sequence

I'm really curious if any of the musicians were hearing synth triggers while they were playing drums, or if they just soloed and Toshi added everything later.

It drives me fucking nuts every time I think about this. I don't have a record player nor the money to spend on limited vinyl BUT I sure would like to fucking hear this and support Toshi with what little money I have.
Just give us a CD or even a download from Bandcamp or something. I've only heard one track from this and I'd really like to hear the rest.

So I'm totally into the Gregg Bissonette songs apparently. I can hear David Lee Roth drums in my head and they rock. But I'm scratching my head... How did this guy end up in Toshi's studio at all? What's the connection? I see other stuff on his discography like Andy Strummer, Katharine McFee, Joe Satriani that all seems miles away from Sound of Sirens/Joyful Noise bands.
