melvins mudhoney four song split, white lazy boy
sick. haze has been killing it lately
Woo hoo! Yes!
Is that Eugene O'Neill?
I hope we'll get a couple Melvins originals out of this! Excited to hear some non-covers for a change. Or will Buzz be singing with the Mudhoney dudes and Mark Arm fronting Melvins...

First Buzzo and Dunn do Six Pack and now My War. They must be on a Black Flag kick lately
This sounds way more promising than the last three of these one-off EPs.
Drive Back, the Neil Young/Crazy Horse song?! Cool. Hepa/Titus also covered it on the Touched By God CD which is still available @ shoxop.
I've enjoyed the recent Melvins cheapy CDs, just not so much on Shitkid though.
There's going to be a non-limited vinyl version of this isn't there?

based on Haze' FB post from June 2 it says "full court press on fancy ass art editions, factory run and cheapie CDs."
two covers and two originals? mmmh
The Melvins are pretty smart. They've released 8 "cheapy" CDs in the last two years, handily separating me from $40, not counting shipping and I don't even own a CD player! These also consist of mostly covers.
In a time where no one buys CDs, these guys have truly outsmarted the system! I'm on board if it guarantees a steady dribble of music from my favorite band!
Are you counting reissues? I know of five.
Al Sabbath
Flipper
Shitkid
Mudhoney
Redd Kross (CD should have included the Steven Shane McDonald EP in liue of the Redd Kross vinyl tracks!)
Then Buzz released the solo EP, that's six. What're the other two?
Can't wait to see what monster letterpress limited version becomes available from Mackie in 2021.
Yeah, I was counting re-issues... still bought 'em
it's pretty clear that Buzz decided it was time to quit with proper full length albums release after AWWLAD
There's been a pretty nebulous distinction between albums and EPs even before this. Lysol is still sometimes considered an EP. POTRE really only has five or six songs even though it's album length. Maggot and PAT are only eight songs. Fucker Club and Electroretard also feel more EP than album.
I really enjoyed AWWLD and I'm duly waiting for a proper follow up album from the trio. I really hope that happens again. For CD collectors, Ipecac is the best quality and most reliable distribution. I don't doubt there's some original non-collab work that's ready to be an album and get its own tour.
put it this way, i think Melvins haven't released a proper album since AWWLAD. still love everything they decide to put out and i'll keep on supporting them forever
The 'my war' cover is really good- a faithful cover of the original with Mark on vocals. Walking Crazy is good as well, Buzz on vocals. Ten Minute Visitation sounds very mudhoney-ish.
I'm surprised they haven't covered more Black Flag songs. At least one choice selection from side 2 of My War...
Maybe it would be too obvious

Great disc, got it yesterday. They really jam out on the awesome Neil Young deep cut, Drive Back. I wouldn't mind a whole album of Melvins/Mudhoney.
Another stock is being made, just put an order in.

Had a listen twice to the EP today. Not bad. On first listen i thought it was pretty redundant at this point but second time around it's good. A bit odd and more straight ahead conventional rock for Buzz and Dale in parts. As with all these recent EP's, i wish they were full length records rather than quick wham-bam-thank-you-mam projects.

I'd be down for a Melvins & Mudhoney full length. The other three (Cisneros, Flipper and ShitKid) were fine enough as EPs.

I don't know, I liked the Flipper one. That potentially could have made for a great full length. The Cisneros one, well yeah I agree just as Sabbath songs. Then again, thinking about it, I could still take an all Sabbath covers record with Al involved. That would be good too. I guess it was just the ShitKid one that to me i wouldn't be so interested in seeing expanded.
Sabbath was probably the best -sounding- of the spare of collab EPs. But the raw feel most of them have really suits the Melvins/Mudhoney EP.
I would love a full length record like this.
Track 2 may be the second "original" Buzz song for the Melvins released since 2017, when "Prenup Butter" appeared on PAT. This has a similar feel. I dig it.

you made me want to check that song and the album PAT again!
This EP has grown on me quite a bit. Especially 'Walking Crazy' that is such a Buzz tune. Does anyone else think 'Ten Minute Visitation' reminds them heavily of Sonic Youth? I think it might be the vocals though. They sound VERY much like Thurston or forced out like Kim somehow. The My War cover is my least liked of the bunch. Do you guys think Buzz wrote 'Drive Back' too? Im not sure about that one.

Ah!!! Nice one, thanks for that guys! sounds great. I never would have guessed that but I did think it didn't quite sound like a Buzz song. So I suppose 'Walking Crazy' is the only Buzz one. 'Ten Minute Visitation' being written by the Mudhoney guys.

The 'edition of 150' was fairly explicit.
However:
Haze's Facebook: "Noir (spot varnish) edition of 100"
AmRep Facebook: "Sorry they sold out so quick. Please realize it takes us a shitload of time and effort to make 500 copies...."
Bored Facebook: "Sunday, July 5, 1200 central time. 5 editions, each of 100 all go up at once." - Haze
I figured there were more of them because it was only $40 while the others were $50 and $75
It probably doesn't cost as much to produce regular black vinyl as it does with the records with swirled designs and such. That's just a guess though. I have zero idea how much it costs to have records pressed.
I went for the black because you tend to not see AmRep do much in black now. I jumped on the Buzzo Six Pack early and wish I had waited for the black in that too. Cheaper price was a bonus since the $AUD conversion is shit. I figured most would go for the pack or the glow in the dark. Was surprised to see the black sell out relatively first.
Plus I'm also a fan of the matte and gloss incorporation.

You're both right. Haze says the black was an edition of 150.
Aaaaaaand here they go on eBay....
$105 for the Silver Screen and $180 for the glow in the dark

New here, but not new to the Melvins. This record is so good. A great pair of covers sandwiching two killer original collaborations.
Nice! Welcome, Twatay.
Curious where/what kind of institution "ten minute visitation" refers to? I heard a retirement home on first listen but it could be a jail, mental ward, brothel, maybe? I can't recall any of the lyrics right now.
Would be cool to have dates when it was recorded and who did exactly what.

i'd mos def say Mark on vox!
Yep, on some parts it's obvious that's Mark.
But I wasn't very sure with the "My War / You're one of them / You say etc..." and screaming parts.
Listened to it again today.
Except "My War", the other songs were such a disapointment!
And it sounds so flaaaaat!

You make a good point there i must say. Considering the band say they record after only just getting a handle on the songs, they don't sound so fresh and vital as one might think they would. Perhaps it's time to give someone other than Toshi a try. Personally i'd like to hear someone like Albini recording them.
Well the band himself seems to know what they're doing. Soooo... is Toshi responsible for their sound? Not only!
If they're OK with that kind of sound, you can't really blame Toshi.
That's what is difficult when you're recording: you have to choose a sound. You can make it sound so different depends on what numerous options you decide to follow!
you're soooooooo right

That is true. I know i do tend to sort of hang those dynamics upon Toshi but you are right it's not HIM in the driving seat so to speak. I think for myself i'd just like to see what the band would sound like with someone different. Who knows, maybe i would like that less, but i do think it would be at least interesting to hear.
I must say though that HAT sounded totally great, and Toshi was the engineer..

Yep, but the album was recorded by Toshi i guess, i think they mixed some parts by Lustmord while the band was recorded by Toshi. btw, i noticed the drums (guitar too) had a better sound on those albums. Then drums started being a bit buried in the mix, with that "flat" feeling you mentioned. i have the same feeling with Dale's solo album which in my opinion would have been alot better with a different production
Yep, Drums are matt nowadays.
And then... you have the songs. Have noticed that a part sounds a lot like "Brass Cupcake"... No big deal. I really have to listen again and try to get that negative feeling away.
I'm not worrying, there are some recent songs that are still really great, like "Don't forget to breathe" that could be real genius... with a larger sound, ahahah!
And I really loved "A walk with love and death - DEATH" album ("LOVE" is cool too, but depends on the mood).
Whatever, I'm off-topic.
Edit: been listening to the Dale solo album after a while and must say i was wrong, the sound is very natural, perfect for the vibe of the songs.. i like the production on that one :)

As the article points out ...
"all of Young's output from 1969's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere up until Zuma was stellar."
Indeed. Zuma's always been a fave ... it was one of those Young gems that got spun a lot in my youth during teenage hash and acid sessions (along w/ On The Beach, Time Fades Away, Harvest, Tonight's The Night). Lots of personal nostalgia attached to those records and it along with those other four have always stood the test of time and are no doubt my favorite NY releases (Dead Man's right up there too).
