Today i was thinking about the future of the band. Obviously none of us know, but just thinking to myself that Buzz is 56 now. I know we don't like to think about this type of thing but how many years do the guys have left in them? Health and gig economy permitting, it's very conceivable Buzz may go on until 70 or slightly beyond. Im sure he at least intends to. But that is really only 14 years away. They most probably are not going to release a new record every year for 14 years. So being maybe slightly optimistic i'd say the band perhaps only has another 12 or so albums left in them before they hang up their gear. That's not many really.
Despite the fact that sometimes i don't really enjoy whatever they put out, i still get very excited about each new release. Due to the fact that probably most of their career (in terms of years) is now behind them, i intend to really embrace whatever we get offered from now on. To enjoy these moments and these times when new Melvins records are something we look forward to and revel in. After all, there will come a point when that won't be the case. Unless Melvins end up like Hendrix and "new" records spring out of the woodwork every few years even decades beyond death!
With Crover's deteriorating back issues (according to Buzz) I think we have been seeing and will continue to see a change in how the Melvins go forward. With no new Melvins albums the past couple of years, further moves into solo territory by both Crover and Buzz and now a new Melvins 1983 album in which Crover also doesn't have to play drums the signs are there and Melvins touring will likely be scaled back in the future perhaps so Crover can spend more time playing with Redd Kross as that would be less wear and tear on his back.
So I think we're seeing it all play out now solo albums from Buzz & Crover will become regular things going forward with Melvins activities reduced.
It's hard to believe Buzz is 56 and still rocks just as hard today as he did when I first saw him 25+ years ago. He still manages to put more energy in his live shows as some bands that I have seen that are in their 30's.

Hmm, maybe. I could definitely see that possibility. I remember ages back someone (i think on here) saying about the track Heathen Earth on '...Sausages' that this could be what Melvins do in their old age. Material like that i guess - playing around in the studio more. Even if health does get in the way to some extent (i.e. with Crover's back) im sure the guys would still record some sort of releases together in the studio. Perhaps it just wouldn't be a live thing any more or with more sporadic tour agendas.
My friend send me the "Working with god" link the other night, I sent him back the Dale Crover new track.
He thinks they'll still be releasing things when they're into their 80's.

It's been established that we can still consider the band as Melvins even when Dale is on bass. I say let's do an era of Melvins where Dale plays bass and they rotate drummers in like they have done with bass players throughout the years. Imagine those potential conglomerations. I havent even considered the end of Melvins yet. Theyll reinvent themselves over and over still...
Exactly. Dale is a capable guitar/singer/bassist/percussionist and we know Coady has at least four album's worth of material in the noggin. Shit, I'd take Dale on guitar and Buzz on synth for an album/tour cycle. They've always been on the precipice of Throbbing Gristle-doing-metal-and-punk.
I know i shouldn't but i still can't help but keep thinking about what the future of the band will be like beyond the next 10 years or so. Perhaps it's a sign of me getting older too but i keep reflecting upon how many more Melvins albums we may get before the end. I mean, Buzz is 58 in a few weeks and that's no spring chicken! At the very most i suspect there may only be about 14 more Melvins releases to come! Throw potential health issues into that and God only knows. Im not sure if i can imagine a 70 year old Buzz and Dale on tour and that's only a mere 12 years away. For instance 12 years ago was The Bride Screamed Murder era and scarily that doesn't even seem long ago at all!!!

Steve makes it to 2025 or 2026 and hes the longest tenured Melvins bassist.

I think Steven might be here to stay. Or at least to be the "main" guy. I'm sure there will still be some Dunn and Pinkus action at points too. Maybe even some Kevin as well. Im not convinced Jared will ever come back though.

I thought that too but then realised that isn't quite true. I assume you are saying Jared is the longest serving so far? Yet really he was only really in the band for 7 years. 2006-2013. I know Coady played some shows at a later date when they were with Pinkus, but im sure Jared didn't beyond that point. I think this is approximately correct....

Pinkus came aboard in 2014 and had different stints. Then of course Steven a year or two later. So there is some overlap there. Things got very changeable and tricky to recall.

Steven is here to stay. He is a killer bassist. He is a really nice guy. He plays in one of Buzz and Dale's favorite bands. He is totally professional. And you can tell he gets along really well with those guys. Plus - he lives in Los Angeles so he is really close!

I agree he's been the Melvins permanent bassist for the last 6 years or so it's clear they like him and aren't interested in swapping around bass players anymore.
Yup in terms of band dynamic he's the best fit. He's got that little brother team player energy.
My only wish at this point is that he'd nerd out on the old records and try to revive some of those songs they never play(ed)
I honestly hope they will change line up one day, not because I don't like Steven but because usually these changes bring freshness to the band. I doubt it will happen though

Same here.
I honestly don't think we are going to see a change in the line up anytime soon. Steven seems like a very cool guy who is very professional (not into drugs) and you can tell that Buzz and Dale are pretty comfortable playing with him, maybe Pinkus or even Dunn could join the band every now and then but, for the most part, I truly believe this is the definitive line up.
