Title: 05/28/2003 Athens, GA 40 Watt Club
Post by: eraserhead on July 17, 2003, 10:05:32 AM
Just got back from Athens. First off I just want to say this: If Mike Patton and Ipecac hate Atlanta so much they should just not book it in the first place.

Dalek, again, was awesome. It looked like Dalek was in a lot of pain though. Maybe it was just for dramatic effect, but I don't recall him doing that the last time I saw them. Their last song was followed by a noise collaboration with Dale and Kevin that led into the Melvins set. It was a good set and good performance, but I would have liked to had them play longer. Here's the setlist:

Night Goat
Lovely Butterfly
amazon
AMAZON
The Bit
Let It All Be
Revolve-We All Love Judy (part of it at least)
Brain Center at Whipples
At A Crawl
Zodiac
Black Stooges
Foaming

Tomahawk came on and started out decent. After a while it got pretty boring though. Towards the end, it was awful and I left.

yep, i was there. Unfortunately, there was a good number of drunken assholes at this particular show that ruined part of the Melvins performance for me. i drove a long way, almost 4 hours, so im kinda upset about that. Yeah, i agree about Dalek though, i was impressed. I didnt expect to take much interest in him, but it actually turned out to be very cool, sorta trance-inducing. I didnt care much for Tomahawk, and i thought Patton was pretty selfish and full of himself to make all those comments about how much Atlanta sucks. Why'd you book it in the first place then? Moron.

Sorry to anyone who's under 21, but in my experience, all the best shows ive been to(as far as the audience goes) have been 21+. I got the impression tonight, that a lot of the people there(especially for the Melvins) just came to act like drunken fools and jump around in the mosh pit. It was pretty irritating and it distracted me from the show.

I'm from ATL and was at the show. You guys are taking him too seriously--ever heard of working the crowd?

I was right on the edge of the mosh pit and it didn't bother me or keep me from enjoying the show. What did you expect? Sweaty young people and explosive music... All the moshers were having fun. Even the guy that was bleeding from the head. If you don't like it, back out of the crowd a bit.

I arrived about 15 minutes into the Melvins set. Why did the show start so early? Is that typical of the 40 Watt?

Anyway, they were ok, but far from the best show I've seen them do. That was in Tucson about 3 years ago. They never seemed to get a long groove going. I hate to say it but they looked and sounded like a band that is withering. Their recent reliance on old material for new releases smells of that, too. Hope they prove me wrong.

I was impressed by Tomahawk. Yeah, Patton is the focus, but they are a great bunch of talent. Dale Crover seemed to be enjoying this set more than the Melvins'. And I've got to hand it to Patton. He sounded great, doing some amazing stuff with his voice, and had a lot of energy. Don't hate him because tghe girls think he's cute. His fame and money (?) are helping out other bands that can use it.

The drive home at 1:00 am on an empty route 78 in cool air at 90 mph was almost as much fun as the show.

I dont have a problem with moshers...i have a problem with spoiled little drunken rich kids wasting away their parents money and attempting to "mosh" (if thats what you wanna call what this guy was doing) away from the pit.

If no one else is doing it around him, its not moshing, its called being an inconsiderate ass. A bunch of other people were visibly irritated as well and were trying to get him to stop.

Have i heard of working the crowd? Yes, i have, you obviously havent...  I know Patton fans too well...relax man, hes not Jesus Fucking Christ. Im not gonna comment on the "dontz be a hata cuz the girlz tink hez da bomb" comment, that was just plain stupid and i wasnt even aware of the fact that he's considered to be a very "cute" guy. I mean, i heard the man ate his own feces once...hey, to each his own.

I DO agree about the Melvins though and you're talking to a HUGE fan here. Saw them in Nashville on the Trilogy tour and that was probably the best ive seen them at. Would have loved to see them back in their glory days(Boner era). Gluey Porch Treatments is definitely my favorite Melvin's album, but ive only had the opportunity of hearing one song from it performed live (Leech).

I thought the show actually started on time...i got there in the middle of Dalek, so it probably started right when they said it would. Doors open at 8, music starts at 9.

And , yes, the ride to the show and back was damn fun for me as well...cool weather, empty roads, eerie light...perfect setting for a night with the Melvins. Listened to Eye Flys again and again on the way there.

I assume you're talking about the guy that came up before the music even started and kept moving around trying to "dance" (that's the only word I can think to describe it as) to the house music. Especially when I was just trying to relax for a little bit after driving 2 hours in Atlanta traffic. What do you expect from Athens though? I know that's the "cool music scene" but every show I have ever been to there is filled with drunken assholes. That said I don't mind moshing, I was on the edge of the pit to and it didn't phase me a bit.

Starting and ending that early is not typical for the 40 Watt. But the doors opened at 8, so in reality it was right on time. Keep in mind that the only break in music was after the Melvins ended, so that took off some time too.

The Melvins have been around for almost 20 years now, so of course it's starting to show. To me it seemed like the set was catered for all the Patton lovers, instead of just playing their best. But what do I know?
