Via HAZE...

"Premature release announciation. With the ongoing vinyl manufacturing delays, I'm not sure when the 10" vinyl of this see's the light of day (spring-ish?), so in the meantime we're gonna have a cheapie CD release party for this one in Fresno Jan. 7! Also doing a really limited 18" x 18" art print of this cover art with some insane metalic flourescent inky action, that'll be available at Fresno event as well. Like an edition of 20 er something. 10" / Cheapie CD includes two heavy Melvins tracks from upcoming LP and two insane covers. One of the covers featuring Matt Cameron of Sound Garden even!"

Upcoming LP!!!! I wonder what the songs are. I like that they are described as "heavy" tracks.

Oh! I hadn't heard that cover of Spoonman before. Will be interesting to hear a studio take. Cornell's vocals are big shoes to fill. I haven't heard many great Soundgarden covers, but crossing my fingers for this one! Super stoked for another round of Melvins tunes. As fans, we are VERY lucky for the steady stream of Melvins' genius  8)

I wonder when this new LP is coming out. Im going to bet around June time. I've noticed that we tend to hear about a new Melvins album about 3 months before it is released, so im sure it won't be long until we get the lowdown on it.

Got my AmRep order today, probably earlier than expected.

First, the covers: "Spoon Man" and the "Misty Mountain Hop" section of MMU are good. Not great, but good. These are both now popular old rock songs, originally performed and recorded by peak teams, so it's almost impossible not to have some "dad vibes" if you cover them now.

The vocal arrangement on the Soundgarden tune is cool. Similar to Five Legged Dog, the three current Melvs have a working vocal relationship closest in quality to the Big Biz years, but not a rehash of that era.

The Devo section of the MMU track is phenomenal. I'm less familiar with the original, so maybe a Devo fanatic will have something to take issue with. I just think if anything it's too short.

The originals: We heard the first tune already. We talked about the wah and the doom. So here's my take on "The Receiver and the Empire State." It's good. It's heavy and a little punky. I'll assume these two originals are the tracks on the next album. The engineering/mixing doesn't sound too far off from Working With God perhaps with a bit of Mike & The Melvins?

I didn't get the sonic textures of Five Legged Dog, which I'd say was the best sounding Melvins album in a decade (barring Love). I miss that consistent attention to detail on the full length records. Hopefully the upcoming record balances that somehow with some studio weirdness. But I also hope it has at least three more tracks that are of this general vein.

Anyway, if you've disliked everything for the past five years or so, this release won't win you back. But if you at all dig this era of the band, then I think you'll be very pleased with this EP and the upcoming releases. We've got two heavyweights and three-ish solid covers here in the span of 13 minutes.

I think this is a good EP. I didn't foresee myself saying this but i like the cover songs! I think it is interesting hearing how light and breezy, airy and open they are. By comparison, the two Melvins original tracks here are quite dense affairs. A bit more one dimensional. Both tracks took me a few listens to feel like i could "hear" them if that makes sense. I like them both but at the same time neither really quite bowl me over. Having said that both have grown on me in the time i've listened to them. I wonder if this forthcoming album will include more tracks like this. If this is the style they were going for on this one. A bit heavy, doomy with a lot going on in the mix.

New songs are heavy burners. Spoonman is decent. Love the Zep/Devo cover, which instantly reminded me that they still need to do a proper studio version of Mr. DNA, with or without the Big Biz boys. One of the highlights of the Fall 2009 tour.

None of these Amphetamine Reptile EPs have made it to any official streaming or digital platform. So it's likely one or two of these will only ever be available on the mail order vinyl, CD, or peer-to-peer.

I am listening to "Spoon Man" again and there's a lot of hard panning in the drums. I can't tell if this is Dale on the right and Matt Cameron on the left, or just some combo of panning and overdubs. Anyone know for certain? There's of course no credits on the cheapy CD sleeve (and I'd expect the same from vinyl.)

Even though it was written prior to the bands cover, i like the way that parts of the lyrics seem to pay homage to and reflect upon Chris Cornell's death - and in a way Cobain's too - both of whom Buzz has lost. The "all my friends are skeletons" and the "Steal the rhythm while you can" bits.

Love the material but the Production sounds like a demo. Really wish they'd step out that Toshi comfort zone. They've done some awesome sounding albums with him, hell, some of my favorites with him. But the last few releases have all sounded kinda stale. For a band that likes to think outside of the box, they sure are boxing themselves in with this one dimensional production.

Maybe it's because Buzz thinks nobody cares about records anymore anyway he does not want to spend the time and money?

Or maybe 30+yrs of playing extremely loud music night after night for 2 months at a time has taken it's toll? It happens to seasoned road dogs after decades of touring like Townshend, Page, etc.. Towards the end of Zappa's life he was approving album remasters that were a sonic mess. I'm surprised no interviewer has ever asked Buzz or Dale in general how their hearing is.

Louder was my first. a coworker gave me a tape with that on one side and AIC Facelift on the other the same week Nevermind came out. at the time i was mostly listening to Megadeth Rust In Peace, Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced, Metallica, GnR, Bullet Lavolta and stuff like that. when i saw Soundgarden open for GnR i only caught the last 10 minutes but it was so epic i bought a ticket and went to the next night's show just to catch the rest of the set. i bought BadMotorFinger and blasted it all the way there. i wore out both of those tapes delivering pizza that summer.
when i revisit Louder these days i can't stand half of it. it was the goofiest of all their albums vocal-wise. Get On The Snake, Uncovered, Hand All Over, Loud Love and Full on Kevin's Mom are great. the rest is tired or awful.

Pretty much anything on Louder Than Love is worse than anything on the four albums that followed. It's not terrible, but it's just not the greatness of Soundgarden yet.

Seriously? What about Gun, I Awake, Power Trip, Full On Kevin's Mom, Hand All Over, Ugly Truth, Uncovered or Big Dumb Sex?

Louder Than Love is amazing!

Ultramega OK is amazing!

Screaming Life is amazing!

Badmotorfinger is amazing!

Then they went to another level that was also amazing!

I am most fond and love the early Soundgarden stuff. Recently I have finally dived into Down on the Upside and Superunknown. Holy shit. Wow!

Revisiting Louder Than Love it's better than I remember. Half of it is classic Soundgarden, just a little less produced.

But the sludgier parts are a bit laughable. And if there ever was a song that did NOT need a reprise, it's "Full On Kevin's Mom"

The song title "The Receiver And The Empire State" reminds me of the NFL super bowl where the NY Giants receiver made that amazing catch with the ball against his helmet. Which ruined a bid for the New England Patriots perfect season.

QuoteThe Receiver and the Empire State

I've been wondering about this, too. Is it about New York? Is it politics? Interesting and a bit unwieldy title.

I took it to be political myself. The song title along with the "we don't know who they are" and the "i just collect what's due" lines made me imagine it was about paying taxes to the Man or something. Being the receiver of a bill and contributing to the empire.

Snagged a copy :o Really don't like paying nearly 12 bucks for priority mail though. Regular media mail is perfectly fine by me.

Either they're going on sale from Amrep this next Sunday, or they're headed out for the tour.

Does anyone have any info on what Buzz's Setup was in 1983/84?. Specifically, did he use a Fuzz pedal or a proco Rat distortion or something what amp and guitar etc?

Anyone else still waiting for their Lord of the Flies to arrive internationally?
I received the King Dunn, but this either hasn't left LA, or is waiting to be scanned in Australia 🤷‍♂️

Cheers Jules. Maybe it's just waiting to be scanned here and something slowed around the time of release. Just seemed weird it's last scan was a week ago

Maybe I'm just being a tad impatient. Was just concerned because, Thirdman Vault, King Dunn and a couple of blurays from Arrow that were ordered after have all arrived.

it's normal when I send a record to Australia for the tracking to show up to two weeks "preparing for departure", then as soon as it hits Sydney it moves like shit off a shovel. Possibly two weeks for the igloo the airline puts on the aircraft to fill with mail before it departs.

Looks like you're right Jules. Had a second scan departed airport transfer LA. Looks like the shit is about to hit that shovel 🥴

Just received my "Buzzing Buzz Blue Edition" and noticed that instead of a stamped number on the back cover, there is a 5/6 handwritten note. Anyone else get one of these? Wondering if I have a variant of 6. It also wasn't sealed, which most of the factory editions have been sealed, so I'm wondering if because this was a screen printed version, that it wouldn't be sealed, right?
