Title: HOUDINI art differences between OG and Reissue
Post by: mikewilliamson on January 09, 2023, 11:23:59 AM
This has been bugging me for years.  Does anyone know why the Third Man HOUDINI reissue art is different than the OG? Ignoring things like font and ink color, there's rather extreme discrepancies like both kids hands are redrawn (with fingernails this time), the girls' left arm is redrawn, the boy's shoe is redrawn, the colored stripes in the background are different, and perhaps most telling, there's no Kozik signature in the right corner anymore.

I have the two lined up (almost) exactly here for folks to see the most extreme differences easily, circled in yellow.  But there's a ton of subtle differences throughout.  This clearly isn't the original art, but what is it? And why wasn't the OG used?

I heard on some podcast recently the guy who does reissue art for Fat Wreck. He was explaining how a lot of times the original art is no longer available because it's lost or on some incompatible old file format. They often have to recreate these things to the best of their ability starting with scans. I know the guy who did the NIN Pretty Hate Machine rerelease, too, tried a bunch of different ways to restore the original art but still ended up just redrawing the whole thing in a vector art program.

Not sure if that answers the questions on this particular piece.

Fascinating!! It's funny that we mention that some music can disappear over time and yet one never thinks the same about the artwork.
