Can we expect a 40th anniversary tour this year? Saw their 20th in 2004 then their 30th in 2013. Will it be this year or next?
One would think this year but given what you state and knowing them it could be ANY year! I know the novelty of an anniversary tour is something in the media and perhaps a bit for fans too but realistically what would be any different than any other Melvins tour? Probably even the same or similar songs too! I'm sure the band themselves don't really care about it in those terms or see it as any more special. Calling it a 40th anniversary tour is just something to sell it.
I would love to see a new south american tour but that seems highly unlikely to happen.

Wow, Never imagined to see this ever again...Wonder if the bands feel the same way about it.
What does 'no spotlights' mean?
I have so many questions.
You can see the Raging Wrath of the easter bunny logo on the poster, presume that's what Mr. Bungle is going to be playing.
Also,
Do you think Mr. Bungle will open for melvins this time? :P

It means Spotlights (the band) won't be at the May 13th show.
i assume bungle will do the same thrashtastic set they've been doing since the most recent reunion. i saw them in feb. 2020, soon before the covid shutdowns, and they were incredibly tight and heavy as hell. total blast.
Testament just announced a big European tour starting in May about 3-4 days after this Bungle tour ends so Lombardo is going to be a busy boy.

They definitely have something planned for this year. When I hung out with Buzz and Dale in October they made it sound like it would be a tour versus a single show like they did for the 30th anniversary. I suggested they go back to the 1996 "an evening with Melvins" format where they did three sets [experimental (with all of them swapping instruments); slow set; fast set].

my brother in sludge, they did a whole tour for the 30th. Buzz, Dale, Coady and Pinkus.

Probably because of Crover not joining the band until '84. In an interview recently with him the guy said something about the Melvins 40th anniversary this year and he said for the band it is but for him his 40th won;t be until next year.
I think maybe that as the Melvins haven't announced a headline tour yet this year and with the Bungle tour happening in May so unlikely a tour announcement to come before then so they may be holding off until 2024 for Crover's 40th anniversary with the band.

For the 40th Anniversary Tour it is time to bring back that 3 sets of Melvins shit they did on the Stag Tour.
Set One: Melvins Classics from 83-22
Set Two: Colossus of Destiny (and not some 5 minute thing either!)
Set Three: Bad Moon Rising played in full with Dylan Carlson playing his guitar parts.
Not that the Melvins give a shit what anyone thinks THEY should do, but damn that kind of show would allow me to die happy. Bad Moon Rising is worth playing in full.

At the very least bust out a few deep cuts on these upcoming tours. Like, I'll go regardless but I'd be down for some genuine surprises.

If the info 'clubraum' for zurich is really correct then it will be even better. This is the smaller room at the rote fabrik. So far I have seen the melvins always play the bigger room aktionshalle... the clubraum has maybe half the capacity. Tickets will be bought right away on friday! How much of a percentage does the band take from a venue for a show?
I was just thinking about this tour and my somewhat local show in Birmingham has a capacity of 2000 people. Tickets are £33.75 so assuming the show sells out, the establishment is taking in £67500 for one SINGLE night!!! That's kinda mind blowing and i've never realised that or thought about such before. Pretty much ridiculous amounts. So how much of that will the band see? Even if they only get 25%, Melvins must be quite financially loaded from all the many shows and years of touring they have under their belt.

I remember Crover saying in an interview maybe 15 years or so ago that from the Melvins and Nirvana royalties combined he makes about $70K a year. I wouldn't call that loaded and he's probably making less than that now. That's likely why they pushed so hard for the Crystal Fairy thing because that was a good chance for a bigger payday but fell through.
I've heard Buzz say before the Melvins play cheaper than most bands charge and make that up by playing a lot more shows than most bands do. That's why he always bangs on about bands being lazy because they're only willing to play shows for x amount of money but the Melvins are willing to play for less. Also good business for the promoters a lot less risk that they'll lose money.

This works out to $40 USD per ticket, which is a bit more than the current average for a Melvins headliner (I think it was 33 bucks last year). I think that's common when bands on either side of the pond cross over to tour to cover the additional costs involved.
Just to correct more misinformation: the Birmingham venue holds 600.

No one gonna mention that Dave Grohl blurb making the rounds today? Guess I will!
QuoteIn an Instagram post, the Melvins' social media shared a statement from the one-time Nirvana drummer turned Foo Fighters frontman. "Arguably one of the most influential artists of the past 40 years, the Melvins have still never relented from being the heaviest band of all time," wrote Grohl. "From the day I dropped the needle on their 1987 debut album Gluey Porch Treatments, I've been inspired by their signature, staggered feel, much like countless other bands who look up to them as the kings of the NorthWest music scene."
There was also one other key part to his message, with Grohl adding, "Oh, and thank you for giving me Nirvana's phone number."

I agree - I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone likes Foo Fighters - but they really do. I saw them at Glastonbury 2017 and could just not get into it. But there were THOUSANDS of people there that were in rock and roll heaven.
I love his drumming - Nirvana, QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures - and I love Probot.
But the Foo Fighters? Boringville.
I loved the first FF album when it came out and for probably mostly nostalgic reasons I still do.
Wasn't the beginning of the breakdown between Buzz and Dave on the last Nirvana tour in Europe when Dave got all excited and wanted to come out and do double drums on Night Goat or something but he pretty much blew that off? Didn't Buzz also complain that they were only getting paid a few hundred bucks a night while Nirvana were getting paid arena bucks?

And the Killing Joke (2003) album and even the first FF album, he's always been a great drummer.
Seriously. He's got the power and the chops. But he can also be Ringo. Listen to Lithium. The verses he's doing such a simple cross stick or rim shot. Then you get those tasteful fills into the pre chorus. And the chorus drums is simple. But the choice to throw those snares on the upbeat at the end of each measure gives the whole thing so much more contrast. Plus Krist gets pretty in the pocket there, too, making Kurt's plodding downstrokes get so much more energy.
Look at me gushing like a school girl.

Some of the songs he had written before he was in Nirvana, some were written while in Nirvana and just a few were written specifically for the demo. He did all instruments and vocals except some extra guitar on one song played by Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs. All recorded in less than a week.

Sounding fucking amazing!
Open with "Snake Appeal"
"Never Say You're Sorry" is the best I've ever heard it
"Let It All Be" finally Steven rocks that groove like it's meant to.
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" is back.
Many regular greats are here, "Honey Bucket," "Revolve," "Evil New War God," "Night Goat," and at least one tune from Bullhead.
They also played a tune from Bad Mood Rising I've never seen in a setlist, forget which one. The Rolling Stones type one with the cowbell groove where he says "bad idea"
Bungle played pretty much the whole Raging Wrath/Night They Came Home set but in the encore the also busted out that rearranged rendition of "My Ass Is On Fire" they used to do. Obliterated!

pomona is technically the "LA area" but it's also kinda the boonies. it's a college town, but i'm guessing not a lot of college kids in 2023 are listening to bungle or melvins.
curious about tonight in hollywood. the palladium is a really big room, like 4,000 capacity. seems a bit ambitious. when i saw bungle in LA in 2020 they sold out the fonda theater, but that's only like 1,200 people.

It's loud. I wore basic foam ear plugs and I'm so glad I did. No tinnitus today.
When they did the Fonda theatre in 2020 they did two nights. But yeah, that was before fans knew what they were actually doing. You could see even a few people last night who came expecting Egg and Travolta and their girlfriends made them leave early when it was all thrash metal.

still, filling the palladium seems like a stretch. anyway if it's not sold out, as a fan i'll be happy. it's a much less annoying venue when it's not packed

Absolutely bring earplugs.
Merchandise wise, they had $30 letterpress cds, cheapy cds, devil head shirts.

 well, it's Pomona. Unless you're living in the near vicinity, it's probably easier just to go to the palladium show.
I feel kinda silly asking about plugs, I knew the answer *sigh* I'm feeling old haha
Either way lol I'm psyched for this tour

curious about tonight in hollywood. the palladium is a really big room, like 4,000 capacity. seems a bit ambitious. when i saw bungle in LA in 2020 they sold out the fonda theater, but that's only like 1,200 people.

It's probably all the Bungle fans, is there a message board somewhere for them?
Seems this is the setlist...
Snake Appeal
Zodiac
Copache
I Want To Hold Your Hand
Hammering
Never Say You're Sorry
Evil New War God
Let It All Be
Honey Bucket
Revolve
Night Goat
I saw a video now and it looks like they played Blood Witch and History of a Bad Men too
Copache too, wonder if they change setlist every night

That would be a very un-Melvins like move!! Bucking the trend that Buzz says about each night being like a well planned opera. Are you sure History Of Bad Men and Blood Witch were NEW clips from this tour?
https://www.instagram.com/p/CsIp2dXusaC/?igshid=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng==
YES! You are right. That's definitely from the current tour. Very interesting. Is this the first time they have EVER changed or added songs on a tour?
another tune i noticed was performed is Your Blessened

I wonder if this tour the band are changing up the setlist a lot to mark the 40 years!!?! Trying to fit in a lot of different songs that covers their career. A proper retrospective anniversary tour!!! That seems to make sense. That would make it so much more exciting than usual.
i think it could be something like that, i should check that full show just posted . btw i really love this set list, Blood Witch is a killer tune
Would be a solid set as Revolve and Night Goat havent been in rotation for years. Blood Witch is also a great pick too!
Hoping for a full North American tour now
A different setlist every night is very interesting, didn't really expected that. It might also be that they didn't got enough stage time to do their entire set at one of the two shows, so they skipped two or three songs.
Anyway, I hope they keep Snake Appeal and Zodiac in the setlist for their european tour.
nice n lean setlists, i liiiiiike- beggars cant be choosers but i wish theyd play just a wee bit longer
They have started tours and dropped or replaced a few songs once it gets going.
They start the euro tour right after bungle. They have for sure rehearsed the full euro 40 set... and they make sure to play all the songs during the bungle shows. Could be... anyways it is a good indication of what we will get later in europe.

Again quite probable. I guess we will know for sure after a couple more shows and seeing the setlists.

zodiac was a nice surprise. always happy to hear your blessened.

I think it is interesting that they STILL keep playing Evil New War God. I think that song has been in every setlist since it came out 13 darn years ago now!! That is really quite impressive and amazing. It's not a bad song at all so i don't mind too much. I really do wonder though why they always include it. I guess they must just love to play it or consider it a high water mark in their career.
I would also like some info on how things are in the Mr. Bungle Camp as well.
For the Hollywood Palladium show, Spotlights had great tone - nice and thick, Melvins utterly destroyed, Mr. Bungle utterly redestroyed everything that just got destroyed. They played a killer set with (I believe) all of the songs from Easter Bunny, some covers (Circle Jerks, S.O.D., Slayer, Spandau Ballet, John Sebastian, Van Halen) and they ended with "My Ass is on Fire". Trey is the most shredding motherfucker there is.

I can't recall hearing it but maybe once or twice not including the Buzzo solo acoustic tour. Maybe those are specific tours I missed.
If they had Onions Make The Milk Taste Bad on this set that's the tune I'd have suggested in that context.
I can also appreciate the fact the Melvins did a solid changeup of the set they'd been doing from 2019 - 2022.

I know Buzz mentioned perhaps around the turn of the year, that they have played it at every show over the years or since the Bride album. That sounds about right too because when i read that it did seem like it never gets removed from any setlist!

It's very nice to see it get refreshed a bit. I still think they could have gone further though - remove Honey Bucket and Night Goat. Maybe even some would like to see Never Say You're Sorry removed too since that's been knocked around for a while now. I wouldn't agree with that one though.
Not like they're catering to any audience, but for the Bungle fans it seems like Houdini and Stoner Witch is all they know. I heard people outside the venue saying as much ",I only recognized like two songs but damn that Honey Bucket was amazing"
I've never been standing there watching "Honey Bucket" being played and gotten bored personally. "Night Goat" on the other hand I don't need to keep hearing unless they do something with it like guest musicians or interpolate some cover song into it or something.
Any shot at a headlining US tour this year? Seems late in the season to announce it, but I suppose fall is always possible.

Almost a certainty with that lone festival show in NY already announced for September.
You can pretty much guarantee there will be a headlining US tour this year.
I forgot they're playing DesertFest New York so yeah, bet there's gonna be a tour surrounding that.
I just hope the Louisville date, if there is one, is a date I can actually catch. 2018, 2019 and 2022 created the most bizarre hat trick.
I think I catch myself saying this almost every time, but the Portland show the other night was one of the best sets I've ever seen them do. I had a friend with me who had never seen them before and he was just standing there with a big smile on his face the whole time.
Bristol tonight
Apparently this was the setlist last night on the first date of the European tour. It seems that whoever said the tour would include the other songs they had played in the US into a longer set was right.

I want to see them do this set. So many songs here I've either never seen them do (Snake Appeal, Copache, Boris) or rarely seen them do (Revolve, A History of Bad Men, Zodiac). Sign me the fuck up.
Melvins in New York in September.
It is a killer setlist for sure. Good for them to celebrate the 40 anniversary like this, it reads explosive, and I think this set will convince folks that see them for the first time.
Personally, I think 'Snake Appeal' is the only one (besides the 2 from bad mood) that I have not witnessed live yet. I was hoping for one from Honky (my all time favourite) and one from HAT (first tour I saw them), but no complaints really. 3 more weeks and it's on!

I suppose it depends what you like to see. Personally if one could choose such things, i would pick a VERY different set. I'd probably ditch virtually all the songs and add the entirety of HAT and The Maggot. I do feel that The Beatles cover here doesn't hold weight though. I'm not a fan of that one. It feels very awkward in the setlist to me.
It's got Zodiac, Copache, Let It All Be, Honey Bucket, Revolve, Night Goat & Boris......that my friend is perfect and everything else is a bonus.

You still GO...then you wait around outside and ask people who might have an extra ticket, failing that, try to get put on the guest list if you can find any of the road crew or band members. You have to talk to people.

I thought about those things but knowing me it wouldn't pay off and i'd have travelled there for nothing. I guess it is worth a shot but i'm not very prone to things like that.
You might think the Beatles cover is out of place looking at the setlist. But I guarantee you that sludgy breakdown of the turnaround completely fucking owns the room every time they do it. It's interesting on the album, but in the moment, with people there who know 1.5 Melvins songs and are hearing "Hold Your Hand" for the first time, it's a complete mindfuck. Remember, it's loud. It's the Matrix. The first one, before it became a shitty rehash of itself. Time slows to a crawl, ad you can look around the room and see the bartender think someone spiked his drink. The metal dude's girlfriend drops her phone. The roof suddenly stops breathing and the room takes a big inhale.
Then that chug chug chug chug duttaduttadutta kicks in and it's a satanic chihuahua biting a guy's dick right in front of you. It's awesome.
Ian, you must go see the Melvins.
And Ween, you must go see Ween at some point.
But you must see the Melvins live.

The Honky vinyl exclusives are SUPREME and the best value for money out of all the merch.
The only other things being sold at the Glasgow show was the new EP CD for £5, a signed poster (can't remember price) and that Ozma shirt they've been selling for the last few years....£30 for that!
They're only taking cash at the merch stand so make sure you got £50 cash on you for Honky exclusive!!! (56 of white sleeve and 44 or 45 of the other sleeve)

LOL 😆 "warms the cockles" also the grandpa Simpson gif is sooo accurate
Personally i don't think Ecu is THAT bad. Just avoid the political stuff. I like it. It's a good place to let off steam, have fun or discuss other matters outside of Melvins land!

Awesome show! 'Let It All Be' and 'Honey Bucket' were unexpected treats. So glad they included Scotland in this tour as I believe the last time they were here (SWG3 in 2017) it was far from sold out and I was worried they might not bother travelling up this far in the future. I had a ticket for that one but had to miss it due to brutal flu that seemed to be decimating loads of folk at the time.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dale's face make-up on this tour yet. What's the deal with that i wonder - a sort of Alice Cooper/Kiss reference/homage?
