Title: Meeting the Band
Post by: m3lv1n on May 26, 2025, 02:51:57 PM
I'm going to be attending my first Melvins show on 10/14/25 in Tulsa OK, I was curious how easy is it to meet the band?

About as easy as meeting two D*cks standing at the corner of Buttcon and Mckracken.

Just make sure to start asking them about Kurt Cobain.

It's pretty easy. Try arriving early.

show up early or stick around aftewards.  before a san diego show i passed buzz on the way to the men's room. i wasn't gonna bother him but he complimented me on my butthole surfers shirt and engaged me in a whole conversation about the buttholes. this is pre pinkus joining mlvns. another time i saw buzz in the crowd at a nels cline show and said what's up and we had another long conversation.  dale's also pretty friendly and of course steven is always the nicest dude in the room. i guess my point is if they're around, they'll probably be happy to say hello.

When they opened for White Zombie in 95, I went downtown a few hours before the show.  At one point, I was walking along the river that was close to the venue and came across this guy wearing a cowboy hat and smoking a cigar. I knew right away it was Mark D.  I went up and nervously started talking to him.  He must have sensed my nervousness because at one point he literally asked if I was ok.  But he was super nice and chatted with me for a few minutes.  Before I left him alone, I asked if anyone in the band wanted to smoke weed.  He smiled, held up his cigar and said that he was the only person in the band that smoked anything and that was it. I told him to have a great show and walked away.

This story makes me want a cigar. I don't even smoke cigars.

Got to the Brooklyn residency shows in 2011 suuuuper early and saw Dale casually walking the streets buying and smoking cigs. I would have loved to approached him and started a conversation, but I didn't want to bother him. Ended up meeting all of them the next day at Tara's place, The Cotton Candy Machine.
They're very approachable if you're cool.

I'd like to know what Mark D preferred to smoke, he knows his hats very well, I'm sure he knows his cigars.

somebody somewhere said they burned one with dale so I call bullshit.  I'm just not entirely sure where I'm calling bullshit at.  it's either at Mark D or at "somebody somewhere".

I was at those same residency shows. Still have the signed Tara poster framed in my office.

That was a pretty great two days. HAZE at the merch booth and all!

I ended up smoking a joint with Tara's fiancé the first night out front without realizing who he was.

Dale used to just go out front of the venue to smoke a cig and was always very approachable...
Not sure if he still smokes now

Should hope not.

He still smoked Camels during the freak puke tour...2012 holy smokes!!! Has it been so long?

.... At least when I saw them in Hamilton. he was kinda casually hangin' out shootin' the breeze with the fans, what a nice guy too, eh?

Super lax and just hangin' free an' easy chatting it up after the show. Man, he's cool as hell.

Dale is such a fricken' cool dude I know quitting sucks, and it would be tough as hell to quit if you're working full time and have all kinds of pressing obligations, but god damn, what's a dude gotta do, you know?

Love you Dale...You're awesome.

I quit smoking, it took me 8 months and I was ready to chew through the drywall for a cig, but after the first three months I started to notice the difference.

Hope you kicked it man.
