Pre-ordered the cheapy CD. Sounds great.

$30 says all four EP songs still end up on an ipecac album anyway.

The CD is on sale - wish they would release the whole thing on bandcamp already.

Mortvaya Koshka!

The album art kind of looks like Baba Yaga but I didn't see any kind of backstory on it

That's the Old Witch from EC Comics. She was like the Cryptkeeper for the Haunt of Horror series.

It's totally Baba Yaga

It looks pretty similar, but the drawing has the same red hood and bug eyes. I still think it's the witch.

Ok. But BABA YAGA is likely the OG template.

She's the best

Surprisingly this Gatta Morta song is getting some traction. Here in Australia a mate of mine in his 60's who doesn't listen to the Melvins told me a mate of his was raving about this song from a new band called Gatta Morta that has Buzz from the Melvins in it and he played it to him and he really likes it. Kind of blew my mind that conversation.

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise though the friend of my mate that got him onto this song is the brother of one of the guys from King Snake Roost who used to be on AmRep back in the day.

I wonder if Gatta Morta have any plans to tour? I know Sleep go out on tour soon after the Tomahawk tour is finished.

My CD arrived (so quick, Haze and co!)

"Taco Bellboy"
A nice heavy Sabbath-ey riff. Clinton takes lead, Buzz belts the refrain a few times. Could have easily been on Hold It In. A little gritty-but-funky bass moment in the outro.

"Victems of the Universe"
Holy shit, this one is fun. Clinton (and maybe all the band's voices) embrace some snarl. It's a little doomy, but far more syncopated than anything in the canon of doom greats. Pinkus has that low, gnarly growl on his bass like on a few PAT tracks. The mix here is great. Vocals are forward, but you can hear every element. And you want to-- for being such a short tune it packs a few really gratifying turns.

"Black Hall"
On CD somehow this is clearer and more thundering than the streaming preview. Again I'm struck first by Pinkus's tone. When the whole band kicks in together it gets a little muddy, but I'm way more pleased with this song than when I first heard it, even the production and mixing. It's plenty Melvins-ey.

"Clear Smoke"
Starts off in that delectable ominous groove like Honky or Bootlicker songs might. Pinkus seems to take lead here, both vocally, and with bass guitar played with a banjo hand. The rising gang harmonies in the refrain remind me of Big Business era Melvins. Best lyric of the whole record is right here in verse two (you'll know it when you hear it). Then it takes off into a building drum exercise, but everybody's along for the ride. And now we're back for verse three and out.

Summary:
All killer, no filler. Every element of this band is present and essential. Sounds like a true collaboration. The last time a collab EP felt this good start-to-finish was the Al Cisneros one, but this here is all new material.

I wouldn't be surprised if later Melvins tours incorporate at least one of these tunes. I hope this four-piece tours this record, though!

What a treat! Fifteen minutes flew by, but I felt satiated like I'd heard a whole album.

Given this a couple of listens and really enjoying it.  Mixing up the vocalists keeps things fresh even if musically it's VERY similar to recent Melvins.
