i don't know? i been thinking - is there any sludge left in the melvins/ or is that over? I'm thinking it's over, as in history. Yeah - the last few years (definitely this newMillennium) i haven't seen a lot of sludge come out of the melvins when they perform. it's Gone a lot more up tempo. Anybody have thoughts on this?
well theyre definitely letting the influence of other player's into their sound these days for better or worse, we'll have to make that judgement when they do the next album. I think they still have some sludge left in 'em,
hopefully we hear it on the next record. Some are saying that we're
witnessing the new lineup right now (adam and DSS) but?? don't count Kevin out, he's got 12 lives. It's an exciting time to be a melvins fanatic
No it's really not, Anaconda. The last two records they've been attatched to have relied heavily upon other people, one of which is a lousy person to have to rely on. They're arsing about with scheduling and suchlike because they clearly want rid of Kevin but won't fire him (it's not really a testament to band solidarity to have him ousted and tour their arses off) and Buzz has been more involved with numerous (and not fantastic) side projects like Fantomas and Venomous Concept rather than creating any new Melvins music. If anything it's a fairly depressing time.

Yes, Lustmord is a lousy person!!!! AHAHAAHAHAHAHA.
Melvins need an injection of Mark D fast..... Mark D and Kevin, the bass duo.
I agree that there are fewer "sludgy" moments on their latest CDs, but the two times I have seen them perform(both of which were recently, in 03 and 04) they have been quite sludgy. Especially the first time, they even played "Crawling". And perhaps my definition of sludge differs from others, but i think that POTRE is one of the Sludgiest things i have heard from them. Not "wading through gory ooze and scattered limbs"-sludge like their earlier stuff, but more like "writhing on a gigantic computerchip covered in poison ooze"-sludge. There is plenty of sludge left in the Melvins.
It's kind of hard not to expect something spectacular from our favorite band, and it's even more surreal to be a bit disappointed in their latest projects, but being a group longer than some of the members here have been alive I think may suggest a bit of creative lag. True they are releasing a lot of product but the quality is lacking according to some here. The Melvins will soon tire of the "collaborative" thing hopefully soon and will release something all their "own". I can only wonder what that may be...
thats what i was getting at, theyve got all the collaborations
out of their system now hopefully, so the future looks exciting
We can but hope, eh? But seriously, all this trad punk stuff like Venomous Concept and -pah- the record with that whingy supposed liberal are so beneath the Melvins now. But hey, they've created more and better music than I ever will so I suppose I should cease whinging...Just hate to see them fall from grace...
who is DSS?
it seems possible that HAT could be the apex of the melvins curve to (and from??) greatness. it is possible, but i would hardly want to believe it. look at HAT, it has all the aspects of the melvins packed into one nice little package. it wouldn't have been a bad album to go out on, but as far as i know the melvins intend to make music for as long as they humanly can, and i think that means many more years to come.
as far as sludge is concerned...who needs it? sure it is fun, but that's what you have those 'old' records for. personally i wouldn't care if they ever wrote a song like that again, because their newest album (let's not forget that is HAT) is really damn good music, well written, amazingly performed, and so out-there, yet somehow familiar.
if the melvins devolved, they wouldn't be the melvins anymore. it is the nature of the collective universal 'melvin' to change, and that's just something new fans will have to accept. that's right, (insert name here) the melvins will eventually stop writing whatever it is you love hearing, and do something new...Get over it!
if you truly love them you will give each of their new directions an honest chance, while being more confident than you would with other bands because you know something not many others in the world know... you know THE MELVINS, self-proclaimed "best band in the history of music" and you know to expect something great!
 8)
also:
let us not forget that the melvins is not only a band, but the worldly projections, today's incarnation, of an infinite universal force at work using secret and inaudible techniques woven into the music to keep the existence of the infinite void in the proper equilibrium. just listen to the music. listen between the music and you'll probably hear it with your inner ear. this is an important point to keep in mind.
the melvins are important goddamnit!
Yeah - well, i do have a confession to make. i don't own/have "Pigs..." as of yet. maybe there is a little bit of sludge on there?
For me - i love all these new "incarnations' of the band. i love Venomous Concept - well - the concept of Venomous concept anyway.
That particualr genre of Rock is about my least favorite - But i own the record, and i listen occassionally - just to check out what Buzzo is doing there.
As for the original reference to Sludge, i was referring to the 92-93 era when i first saw the band live. lorax was playing bass and Buzz would sustain notes for minutes literally with Lorax grinding a super slow dirge on bass and dale providing the only real entertainment for minutes at a time and then Buzzo would finally go off on those wild Riffs straight out of the montesano high metal shop.
hey vinny, DSS is David Scott Stone
hey popeye, here's a live clip of them doing the title
song to Pigs as a trio; Dale, Buzz and Dave Scott Stone:
http://lazerman.netomia.dk/POTRE.mp3
Vinny made a good point too, he said the melvins want to
play music their whole life as long as humanly possible.
Maybe that's why Buzz changed his mind about Jello and
decided to write with him. Because he's a dude thats 50
and he's still doing shows, running a label, putting out music
etc like Buzz would like to do.
Thanks for the link. i downed it (i think?). haven't seen or heard it yet though cuz i can't (not yet!) figured out how to open it, but there's a good chance i'll get there.
i've always thought HAT was a masterpiece myself, and that tour was a transcendental Victory for everybody involved.
I'm not complaining - myself - about the absence of sludge, that's okay - i really like the new stuff - the now stuff.
Those two shows in seattle were Glorious. really. They were perfect, especially the second night when they really just let it RIP. ooohhh!
That Twin Axe Attack - ooohhh - pretty Gory!
Adam wasn't animated at all, he really didn't seem to even look at the crowd or notice them, although of course Buzzo still Plays to the crowd, so Adam being a Gorgeous statue making pleasant noise was just fine with me. i was impressed. Adam only really got to "Solo" with something semi-long a couple 2 or 3 times (NYEve- I was a lot closer and paying more attention to who was doing what!) But his 2nd guitar Act was impressive. he really sort of just fills in Buzzo's sound and makes it edgier occassionally.
i liked that Noise intro (Plethy...) especially the second night when it all just seemed so much more Serious. as in Damage!
i think not
the sludge has parted on the newer albums :(
The Melvins have become far too dynamic in terms of songwriting, musicianship, influences, and members too ever do anything akin to Bullhead or Lysol again.
I've been quite dissapointed with the Melvins after H.A.T; I think they've lost their direction. Look at all the side projects: Fantomas, Venemous Concept, Tomahawk, Altamont, Jello Biafra, Lustmord, Men of Porn. I mean, what the fuck is going on? Can anyone really tell what these guys are doing?
I personally think the Melvins reached their creative zenith, and the full reaches of their sound, on Bullhead. Don't get me wrong, I still love the Melvins, except the later Deutrom years. But the glory days of pure Melvins sludge on recording (as opposed to live incarnations of old songs) are behind them
Relax people. Melvins have not lost their melvinosity the shitty collaborations notwithstanding. Even great musicians are allowed to like crappy music ;)
It's just the Melvins being Melvins.
Personally, though , I don't care if they never write another bullhead or lysol or maggot. I mean there are a zillion other bands who write nothing but sludge. I love albums that have a lot of variety and Melvins writes exactly those kind of albums.
melvins rulez !!!
meshuggah rulez !!!
POTRE RULEZ
NEVER... RULEZ
HAT is boring !! SORYMEN
Well i was most impressed with eggnog :D
this post sucks sorry :(
:P
Quote from: Binkard and FriendsI personally think the Melvins reached their creative zenith
yea
i think OZMA/GPT were their 'melviniest' albums
especially DALE!
his HAT drumming cannot be compared to OZMA/GPT!!!!
on HAT, i only like the noiz stoff...
Personally I see nowt wrong with 'Pigs...'. Frankly, it's the only collaborative effort of theirs that I think works. To me, Crybaby's just godawful with no direction and a load of tossed-off attempts at avant-garde and the less said about Never Breathe If Your Name Is Jello the better. Least Pigs had some depth to it...
And another thing, what's wrong with HAT? It sounds like Stag Part 2 to these ears, which surely should be welcomed but in the main it looks like the Melvins might be losing something. I mean, Collosus was frankly shite compared to their old stuff and makes Prick seem awesome and Electroretard was essentially a retread of their old stuff. Now we've had 3 collaborative albums and only really the Maggot, Bootlicker and HAT to reassure us of the Melvins greatness as a band themselves...Even the 7"s they've had out recently have been fucking terrible i.e. Thank You/Message Saved. Something's got to give soon.
But again, they produced some of the best music ever in the Lorax/Preston/Deutrom years so I'll try and counterbalance my whinging.
Absolutely Dood! i'm just glad i'm along for the ride! listened to millenium monsterworks today and Thoroughly enjoyed it. it's a live perf with mike patton doing his Lame-ass Scat singing to a slew of melvins tunes- SDSS is prob'ly on it i'd have to check the cd booklet to figutre out whoelse is playing on there, But - today - after going to those two shows at neumo's I just wanted to hear MM one more time, cuz i usually write it off as soon as patton starts shrieking - hell! - i can sing better than that Tard! Especially to melvin's songs! And like i was saying - I turned it up loud and listened good - and it was Fukn Glorious.
Dale's drumming has not been the same since Gluey Porch Treatments. I'm glad someone brought that up.
It seems like he gave every ounce of talent and strength for that record, and the only recent Melvins effort which has amazed me with its drumming was H.A.T.
Listen to "Exact Paperbacks" and "Heater Moves and Eyes" off of GPT; some of Dale's best work.

This clip is awesome :D Do you have the other songs of this gig too Anaconda :?:
I got the whole set from DubEMC. I agree that it's awesome.
It's not the classic sludge, but it sure as hell rocks! It gives
me hope for the future, if this is how they can pull of Pigs
as a trio.
hey, can you upload hung bunny ? I love that song :)
Last five minutes are amazing! Some new / improvised sludge ala Lysol! This is some heavy shit! Hope they release it on their next record
It would be nice to see another real melvins only album. I don't think it have to be "sludge" seeing another lysol would be weird though. I just don't want anyone else singing but Buzz and definatly not Jello.
Yeah, Jello's lyrics and vocals suck fo-sho. On that album, The Melvins changed their style towards Jello, instead of having jello change his style, or have some sort of inbetween.
But the last song on that cd kicks.
And if you want sludge, try Men of Porn. Or High on Fire. Its still out there.
Buzz must have some kind of "Respect" for Jello, and at least Jello can come up with lyrics for the tunes Buzzo & Adam are Grinding out.
This brings me to my Point. The whole jello "thing' it's all worth it. Absolutely! just to give Buzz - Dale - Adam - SDSS a motivation to get together and come up with something New.
The real payoff is seeing the Live shows. Right now - i'm referring to the 2 shows last Week in Seattle @ Neumo's. Believe me - it was Incredible.
That was good stuff - Brilliant. of course i am partial to the melvins sound as opposed to Slipknot or Brittany Speers.
They didn't fuk up. I didn't notice any musical "Gaffes". Even jello delivers in a sense. At least he keeps the beat and he's energetic as hell. That second night he didn't have much left as far as Range goes. But he was still doing it. So i say god bless him (even if he is Gay) he Rox and i like his Band!

!
There's no need to be patronising about things, it's just the the Melvins tend to make good noise and Jello makes horrible nosie. Add to that the fact that, from what I've heard (2 songs-I refuse to buy the record) it's all standard shite punk which seems below the Melvins' usual creative and heavy stuff.
As for "it's all in the live show...", I'll bet it is, but sadly I've yet to see the Melvins headline a tour as they were too ill to come play Europe last year. But they were fine with playing in America after making such a claim. Lost me a fair amount of respect, did that move...
Rev Dood- now that you explain it like that - i understand better where you're coming from, sorry man - i don't mean to offend. I was just lucky, so were the other melvins fans in the Area. Lately Buzz has been doing these kinda shows in SF. But Seattle got a Fantastic Treat with 2 shows.
They played for 90 minutes the second night (maybe 83-85)
I had to look up Patronizing. Yeah - i guess i am. Definiktely patronizing towards king Buzzo and the melvins and just about anybody who gives them a reason to play music - including ursula the bass player from the supersecretshow. You rock Girl!
No, I mean 'patronising' as in 'condescendingly sarcastic', rather than being a 'patron' of someone's music....
But I'm glad we understand one another.
i wasn't being sarcastic at all. i basically mean everything i said - in a straightforward way. I had no idea what jello was gonna turn out to be like, and he turned out fine. i have new found respect for the man. Without jello - they wouldn't have been there (NEumos Dec 30-31, '04) at all.
and it Doesn't matter at all if he's Gay. Not to me. maybe that part of my post rubbed you wrong? just a lame attempt at humor, sorry everybody.
I'm sorry, but are we communicating in a common tounge here? I made reference to your Slipknot comment, hence I quoted said comment and made my point about sarcasm regarding that. I couldn't give two figs about Jello's sexuality even if he was into beastiality and made no comment of any nature regarding such an issue. I thought you were suggesting that the people who thought the Melvins had lost their edge would find solace in the music of Slipknot or Ms. Spears.
Frankly, I wish I hadn't bothered. If I were feeling cruel I'd make some comment regarding ether huffing, but since it's Friday and I'm not feeling as grumpy as usual, I won't...
the end of sludge? come on they're the fucking melvins. the day buzz stops playing loud ass heavy guitar is the day he stops breathing.
or has a massive stroke.
same for dale, but even after his heart ceases to beat, strangely his hands and feet will still tap out odd time signatures. :?
what about The Fool, The Meddling Idiot
howzabout the "Anti-Vermin Seed"? that starts off mired in sludge doesn't it? I'll have to go check - my memory is failing - way too much weed...,
C'mon, Never breath what you cant see is a great album and jello is good. Too bad for you if you dont enjoy it.
I 've been thinking myself the same lately. I mean, HAT just doesn't annoy people the way Lysol does. To my dismay, I've found that many of my retarded friends who despised the Melvins (much to my delight) in high school, during the Lysol/Houdini etc... days have now found it in their dark souls to enjoy the Melvins. This is sad, as i could've sworn it says somewhere in the bible you're not allowed to like the Melvins if you also like Weezer. I blame myself, spending all these many years now insisting that the Melvins are the greatest band ever, and being so utterly cool personally that people have been forced to agree. But I digress....
I actually don't have much complaint about the Melvins recent gifts to us (I choose not to include Never Breathe... among them) POTRE is lacking, true, but HAT is fucking great. I would give my spleen and 3 fingers off my writing hand just to witness Hung Bunny or Charmicarmicat live though. I've had enough of The Bloated Pope... I'd prefer to hear the Bloat. Maybe if we try bribing them ??
Quote from: Methadone BusThis is sad, as i could've sworn it says somewhere in the bible you're not allowed to like the Melvins if you also like Weezer.
I don't see why not. I mean, I have Earth and Madonna on the same playlist...
Quote from: popeyei don't know? i been thinking - is there any sludge left in the melvins/ or is that over?
i dont know....does a re-released remastered sludge album from the bands heyday with some rough demos of alternate takes thrown in count?? Whatever, its been 20 years and they're still breathing, thats all that matters, and they do what they want....lets not stop the Melvins from reminding us of this everytime they're out of material and start to suck, right?? :?
Don't mess w/ Beto! Traders Unite!
Quote from: Methadone BusI mean, HAT just doesn't annoy people the way Lysol does.
lysol dozent annoy me like hat does ;)
lysol is like a candy, i can grab it anytime
btw what does it means, LYSOL?
Lysol is a really strong "soap".
