What does everyone think of this album (Amphetamine Reptile).
It's really grown on me. THere's alot of cool stuff on it, I think.
i made a cassette of it for my old car and listened to it a good amount. 1/3 of it aren't really songs, just noise. disc 1 is good/disc 2 is lousy after the first four tracks (omitting HDYF)
Funny you should mention this release as I only just picked it up yesterday. I've only listened to the first CD thus far but have fallen in love with the versions of 'Leech', 'Queen' and 'It's Shoved'. I've had Lexicon Devil kicking around for a while now but that's cool too. I do like the compilation but I had to shell out
It would have been cool to get each single in the mail and enjoy them in the format they were originally intended. I like getting stuff in the mail.
But I missed out. So Singles 1-12 is the next best thing.
If you take Singles 1-12 for what it is, a documentation of the monthly AM Rep Melvins 45 releases, a stroke of marketing genius if you ask me, you accept the music as is.
Disc 1 starts out with Lexicon Devil. A Germs cover from a tribute album that you don't have to buy. This song in itself is worth the price of the C/D. Once I heard Lexicon Devil I made up my mind that no matter what else the other songs sounded like I was happy.
Pigtro, Spred Eagle, Queen (Special Mix) are all B-sides. The Queen Special Mix is especially annoying. I have been asked many times if my speakers are fucked up when that song plays.
Theme is also a "B" side but this is brilliant! better than the Flipper cover on the "A" side.
GGIIBBY was "chopped off Houdini" for being "bad". I totally disagree with the Melvins, the song is awesome.
Theresa Screams I just skip over every time now.
Disc II has a lot of Melvins experimental stuff, the singles idea is a perfect format for this stuff. Yeah it dosen't translate that well to C/D, but that's the order it was released in the mail.
Jacksonville and Dallas are fucken clasics. I would have loved to be there. Imagine the huge balls Buzz has to stand in front of a hostile crowd and tell them all to fuck off. I always wonder how the songs were created. They had to have been planned in advance, on hold so to speak for the right group of ass-holes in the crowd.
The Bloat demo is a beutiful rendition of of one of my all time favorites.
Fast Forward is supposedly just "Buzz and Dale playing with a cassette recorder", but I love this bit of noise when my mind is altered or i'm driving on a smooth stretch of highway. It would have fit in nicely on the Stag release.
I agree with Cooter, HDYF is an incredible piece of Melvins noise from 1996. But what the fuck does HDYF mean? That bugs me. Maybe it's Buzz proclaiming his love for American motocycles? or How Do You Feel?
How-++- and Henry Lauders Walking Stick Tree together was just an all-round bad idea, it should have been a "B" side and the outstanding cover of Brutal Truth singing Zodiac should have been the top billing on the "A" side.

How Do You Feel. It's actually a Love cover written by Arthur Lee. I think they recorded it with Sean Lennon. They recorded one more song with him and Yoko Ono but it was never released. And this is no joke!!

I actually prefer how-++-harry lauders played together. Anyway I used to work graveyard at a gas station, and teresa screams would always scare the living shit out of the customers, so that was good.

If you don't think Stoner Witch needs editing, with three minutes of what sounds like a microphone being shuffled around in someone's pants. If you don't think Prick and Honky have lots of filler. If you love Spread Eagle Beagle, a long, non-rhythmic Drum solo. Maybe, just maybe I can get some agreement that this is the one that needs editing. Badly. Lexicon Devil is one of their best, ever. Way Of The World, Leech, Poison, Theme, also good to great covers. GGIIBBYY is definitely good enough to be on Houdini, in my opinion. In The Rain really cracks me up. I'm always singing it in reference to my Sister-In-Law. I don't Like you, or anything about you.... Also a great alternate version of the Bloat. It's great with slide guitar. It's great without it. Specimen is groovy, but creepy. After those, I don't listen to much of the other stuff.
Specimen best captures The LIVE CONCERT sound of this band in the mid 90s.
One of the best. Sounds like they pulled this off during a sound check.

Listened to first song (Fudge Tunnel). That's pretty tight. Someone loaned me one of their tapes in high school, about '90. It just didn't click at the time. Now this sounds like something I would listen to.
Lexicon Devil was recorded for the Germs tribute album. A great tune, but when the band found out Courtney also contributed I think they lost interset in the project.
I forgot Alex Newport also got production credit on STAG.

I had always hoped they would do a letterpress version with this track layout.
SIDE A Album: you get a powerful album of eight awesome cover songs, some rare Melvins songs, one epic live improv, and a pleasant noise experiment to close it out. No filler!
Then on the almost unlistenable b-side disc you start to get into some chickenswitch/colossus/prick territory with the occasional brilliant payoff. Ten minutes of A&R demos leads off before you get to Theresa Screams and some actual near-classic Melvins tracks.
It's the only way I can listen to the album(s) now. It makes so much sense! And I love Prick and I enjoy the other challenging/experimental Melvins full-lengths so rediscovering this wicked record is a true joy.
I could do that If I owned the Actual Singles, using a tape deck. I SO SO WISH.

Those were not planned I was at the Dallas show what happened was the crowd was ripping up the particle board that was covering the Ice on the floor(Fair Park Collesium had minor league hockey at that time) and throwing it on stage so The Melvins seemed to love but then responded making constant noise Dale Crover just kept hitting the gong constantly and making a giant middle finger with the drum sticks. The part in the song where he's saying "what's the matter?" is because the crowd stopped throwing particle board knelt down on their knees and turned away from the stage. And thats where King Buzzo starts his made up song "Come on Dallas"

Any song that already appears on another album is out ("It's Shoved," "The Bloat," "Leech"). The unlistenable demo tracks are out ("All at Once," Queen"). "Pigtro" here represents all those noise b-sides that were cut.
It still starts with "Lexicon Devil" which is the highlight, and why I could never leave this album alone. It's mostly A-sides up front and B-sides in the latter half, but sequenced for what I think is a solid listening experience.
"In the Rain" gets moved to follow "Jacksonville" as a nice palette cleanser with its crisp snare work. "Nasty Dogs" bridges them together.
"HDYF" and "Theresa" close it out, both highlights of the deep cuts to help you stick it out on the looser second half.

I still love this collection of songs. I've been working on a mixtape of sorts. At this point I have 22 of the 24 tracks represented, with all the "songs" in full, of course. It fits on one CD now and flows more like an album.
I'd love to get some feedback on the sonics and sequencing. Anyone else interested in working on this in some way? PM me.
One of the very worst Melvins mistakes i ever made was getting rid of this album. I totally wish i had kept it.
