Title: The End (2003)
Post by: mumu on April 28, 2005, 03:56:35 PM
This cassette was entitled 'The End,' it was a live recording of the Melvins released by Enterruption.  Does anyone know the date and location of the show that this tape is recorded from?

Thanks! :D

I have an 8-track, a blue one (1/5), and I thought about that trade for a second, but then I looked up at it, framed on my wall, and I thought "No dice".

But I sure would like that tape.

honeslty, I was slightly dissapointed with it as well.   coulda been something entirely new, even if it was a live recording.
seems like maybe they threw enterruption a bone.

but on the other hand..  are bootlegs and tapes going to go for a jillion dollars on ebay?  no.
(not that I'll most likely ever want to sell mine anyway)

Agreed on the semi-disappointed thing. New material would be cool, but hey, I ain't complainin'. Any Melvins release is a good one in my book. I'm just thankful I have a turntable!

tell you what... seeing as I am opposed to the illegal thievery of MELVINS material I'd like to propose the following:

I will post a picture of MY legally purchased The End vinyl.  THEN one of you fine folks will send me a DL or CD version of the album.   seeing as I have proven that I do own said album.

its a win, win situation.      I get to actually hear the vinyl I have purchased. and you get to help a poor, pathetic turn-tableless loser, yet honest and hard-working MELVINS fan out.

Order placed. That was a great tour, and this release almost makes up for them not playing any H.A.T. material in '06/'07. They've got to revisit that album w/ the Big Biz boys.

I have (or my housemate has) a turntable but I was too late...   fucking sold out. I completely forgot to check back here this morning.

It's even more frustrating as it was Monday here (Australia) first!

Congrats to the lucky 500. Please don't put swastikas on it and sell it for $1500 on ebay.  :)

I was here in '04 and I don't remember this being released on cassette either. Maybe it was so low key no one really knew before the tape sold out. Is this the same show that has the three tracks - Night Goat, The Bit & Zodiac -  on the "TV Eye Vol. 3"  DVD?

The tape was really low key.  The show was from a troubadour show; i'm not sure if thats the one on tv eye.

Kinda really fucks me off that with a band that is so obviously as popular as Melvins, that the label would only press 500. It's pretty ridiculous, really. I dunno where Melvins stand on downloading mp3's, but I  don't really feel much sympathy when shit like this happens...

Note: before the hate posts start, let it be known that I am a completist when it comes to Melvins releases, so I will (eventually) own a copy of this. Just annoyed that the label chose to do such a small run when they could have easily done at least say, 2,000.  They could have done a 'limited' run of 500 and a standard run of 2,000 or something, grrr.

/adds yet another Melvins record to want  list

thats the game.   MELVINS fans are more often than not completists.   actually, their more often than not obsessive, cultish, stalking, psychotic junkies who would normally throw money at anything with the MELVINS logo on it.  pressing 500 gives them a trophy to claim.    pressing 5000 kinda takes the sparkle off releases like this.
would anyone really care to obtain something that is readily available and they already have a DL of it off soulseek (or wherever)?

i'm listening right now and it sounds awesome. hooch is only played for a minute then it goes right into mombius hibatchi' which is pretty cool, i forgot they did that on that tour cause for a minute i thought the record skipped perfectly into m.h. anyway i am one happy fucker right now.

499 0f 500 arrived today. The box and contents are MINTY and straight.

Besides 'the end' I also received a Larsen? LP (black in color). Track 9 says it's derived from Pink Floyd's Vegetable Man. I need to purchase a new needle for my turntable as mine was fucking destroyed during a move. I can't wait to crank these mofos.

I also received the sticker w/ faces, and also a gravitar cd.

Or I can trade you some really good herb if you are in central NY.

I don't know why but I find this to be one of the funniest posts I've ever gotten to read on this forum.

I find it to be one of the most depressing.     because I don't live in central NY.

How did it ship, US mail - media/first class/priority, or by UPS? I pray that this arrives to western NY safely. My card was charged Tuesday. Maybe Monday it'll be there when I get home.

It was packed in sturdy cardboard.  They're not shrink wrapped, but they do have a plastic cover.   I wouldn't think there would be any problem unless you have a retarded mailman who leaves it on your porch in the rain.

If anyone has one of those record players that hooks up to USB they should put a copy of the show online for those who bought the record. i listen to music heavily through my ipod, and recently have been lucky enough to have a few vinyl only things in mp3 form (SC3 singles, Burial Chamber Trio, Corrupted). I would appreciate it if anyone has the ability to do this.

FUCK :x I hate media mail. I'll be lucky if I get it by next Friday then. The last CD I received via media mail, the package looked like it got ran over by a bulldozer. The case was all fucked up, but luckily the CD/artwork was intact. If I get a busted record, I'm keeping the cover and sending them back the broken piece of vinyl and getting my money back.

Holy shit! It just arrived yesterday and I finally had a chance to throw it on. It's better than I thought it would be. It came in a sturdy cardboard container and I was happy to see that record is in as good of shape as could be. The vinyl described by Enterruption as "pink...ish" is actually more of a primary red. A bit lighter than the red colors that you see on this forum. The artwork is pretty basic and comes with a pink slip of paper inside. The paper has  a hand-written number in the lower right hand corner. Mine is 416 of 500.

The record opens with a few seconds of silence and cuts into distorted guitar chord and the opening drums of 'At A Crawl'. Honestly, this song  sounds better now then it did 20 years ago. The tempo is heavy and slow and the riffage is blunt like a sledgehammer to yer skull. Just how all you Melvins dorks love it. After crushing a fairly straightforward version of this early Melvins classic, the drums roll into H.A.T's lead-off drum beat while Dale gives his kick drum a proper working-over. After a few fancy fills thrown in for good measure, Black Stooges rears its nasty head, coming out of the gates blazing. Buzz flashes some pretty slick fingerwork on top of the main part before launching into a no - nonsense thrash take on the song.  Steadily gaining  momentum, Stooges comes around full circle ending on the same drum part that Dale started out with.

After a short pause, the opening riff of 'Night Goat' bobs through the murk. Kevin's bass sounds absolutely brutal here. Probably nothing you haven't heard before. This song  seems to make an appearance on about every other live or specialty Melvins record. Oh and same goes with 'Revolve', which is played next. Who's tired of this tried and true classic? NOT ME! This time it seems pretty straightforward, albeit played two times faster than the orginal recorded version. Towards the end of the song, the driving beat drops  seamlessly into about a half minute of 'We All Love JUDY' and much heaviness ensues! After just a taste of my favorite song off the Maggot, Melvins tear into 'Brain Center at Whipples' without missing a beat...

That's all for now. Side Two later....

HOLYSHIT: just finished spinning this puppy. Fucking amazing! The sound is so good (something I wasn't expecting). This was one of my favorite tours of theirs and this record is so emblematic of that tour. The lovely bass rumble did make mis miss Kevin even more though  The dead wax says: (side 1: Watch this! side 2 You're doin' it yr doin it!) I thought that was cool. The small taste of We All Love JUDY between Revolve & Brain Center was magic for me. I'm not a big downloader of live musics off the internets, and vinyl is my preferred format, so this record is a godsend to me. Fucking perfect. 5 out of 5 stars.

Indeed. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Big Biz guys being in the Melvins, but the time when Kevin was handling the bass is probably my favorite period of the band.

Been listening to this baby all day now and it's fucking great, but I gotta ask WHERE IS THE FOOL...THE MEDDLING IDIOT?!?! That would have to be my only complaint because it's my favorite Melvins song of all-time.

Dear Diary,
Day 9,  and still no "End" in site.   I hear the howls of joy and the low-end rumble of a certain bass line off in the distance but to this point there is still no rumble for me.    almost sounds like Night Goat.  what a sweet sound that would be right now in this time of desperation.   I still hold out hope that my ship will come in, prayers will be answered, etc. etc.
until then I wait.   wait quietly so maybe I can pick up another note or two of the sounds I long for blaring off in the distance.
Title: Re: The End (2003)
Post by: heavyR on January 23, 2008, 07:24:26 AM
I think that the new songs (Billy, Suicide) kinda sound like a return to where the band left off with HAT, kinda like the first ASA was Big Biz getting used to playing with the Melvins and now that they've been through two tours together and are getting tighter Buzz can resume where he was writing-wise after HAT. Just with no slide bass of course, which will be missed but I believe the double drumming will make up for it. Just my thoughts after listening to those two new songs a bit more recently. Also this could explain for why someone posted the other day that the new songs remind them of Tool (even though you all said its the other way around you know what elements they were speaking of) and I believe those same elements were there with HAT.
Anyone else agree or anything?

I'm tellin ya,  the packaging is not sealed.  its a hairy mess.

just heard bUTTHOLE's kindly version.    aw man,  its times like these I miss ol' kevy myself.
the bass on the bloat is just out-and-out NASTY.   kev's timing is perfect.  not perfect as in right on original recording time but more perfect as in he slows it down a bit live as opposed to the normal double time everything seems to be when played live.

just out of curiosity I'd like to hear Jared take a crack at the bloat.

I'll never forget seeing the Melvins with Adam Jones on the GPT reissue tour. They opened up with Eye Flys. Kevin had the intro down pat; his head was bobbing furiously, but it wasn't in time with the bass line intro that he was playing. Like a psycho Angus Young he was able to keep two different rhythms simultaneously, and one was just for his own fun . It was so disturbing, and yet so amazing to watch.

I got one of those shows on dime, I love how the crowd goes BFC during that song. Or maybe it was DSS that was playing? Yeah it was. But I noticed the rythm thing, kinda fucks with ones head.

Interesting facts about this release:

1.) there are actually only about 460 copies in existance.  due to printer issues roughly 40 copies were sacrificed.
those are in the early 300's.

2.) about the first 20 copies have original labels on the vinyl itself with a white skull as opposed to red. until, again,
printer issues caused enterupption to change over to a red skull label.

3.) about 45 of the actual records have white or black swirls pressed in the pink (red) vinyl and only a handful are a true
pink.  the rest are a primary red.

4.) "the fool" which was part of the original setlist was left off this recording because of an error by  the legendary kurt
schlagel.    in other words..  he forgot to press record until damn near the end of the first song. that being "the fool".

5.) this released vinyl version has been remastered from the original recording so the sound quality should be better
      than the original cassette release.

6.) this album was originally intended to be manufactered and sold on the POD tour of 07. but the printer "dropped the
ball" and it didn't get completed in time.    (note: imagine how many of us would be bitching about not getting this had
that been how it turned out)

hey all - i got quite a few emails conerning my previous post.  instead of getting back to everyone, let me clarify:

i don't have a copy of this, but have the means to transfer.  i have been transferring Floyd cas>cdr for years for various collectors, so i have a lot of practice.  if anyone wants to send me their copy for a transfer to cdr then i will gladly do so and then send the original cas/lp back.  if there is anyone near the Chattanooga, TN area that has either the cas or lp then we could meet up or you could come over and hang while it is being done.

peace,

I was wondering why the record seemed to start already into the set...

You guys who got a free 7" or 12" are making me jealous. They did give me the Graviton CD though, and it's surprisingly good. Usually if a label gives something away for free its an indicator that it's not all that great, but i'm liking this one. It's got a good dirty sound.

highly doubtful.

I think the intention here was to give the most intense of collectors a second shot at this after its original release on cassette.    I think enteruption records had more to do with this re-release than the MELVINS actually did.    all MELVINS had to do with it was giving permission to enteruption to release it.   plus most likely a cut of the sales.   beyond that it was enteruption's baby.

Here's something strange. I got a hold of a digital copy(in a totally honorable way) of the end.  I put it in my phone, and a couple of days later when I listened to it for the first time it was something totally different.  It sound like some really slow, unmusical droning, experimental noise.  Am I crazy?

what does this thing sound like, we don't have sound in Canada!

is it worth collecting the 200 dollar cassette.

here's a better question..is it worth being a totally over-obsessive and Anal (with a Capital A) collector?

here's a cassette no one should live without!~

Very well done. My compliments to the chef, aka Andrew Crawshaw.
I didn't realize that the screened LP was black ink on clear red vinyl,
the picture looked like red ink on black vinyl. The cover is sweet too.

This is getting ridiculous.

Over the summer my Melvins collection has gone from (almost) 100% complete to no-way-near complete because of all these ridiculously expensive releases and re-releases.

I have both the original cassette and vinyl of The End, both bought immediately when they came out at "standard" not-excessive prices as was the AmRep releases. This summer could easily have cost me around US$ 1.500 with import taxes'n'all if I have had the money.

I appreciate your angst, though. But at least it's not a bootleg and, as this isn't North Korea, you don't have to buy it.

If you define bootleg as meaning it was not ordered by the Melvins, then yes it is a bootleg.

Point taken. Presumably they okayed it, though? I don't think there's anything going on here that Melvins haven't given the green light to.

Not true.  This edition of 40 was started by the guy at Ent, who sent half to the Melvins.   Melvins did not sit around and say, "Lets call up that guy that did the End record and tape, and have him make another edition."  Make a bootleg, send half to the Melvins, and they will sell it.

props to Glen for this hookup, seriously

thanks bro

sure you will have people bitching about the price, and no it's not cheap, but the record will sell for probably double what we paid (pinky you were more fun when you were showing your cans)

never again will I say Glen hoards 20 copies of the End in his basement, only to to be bartered for the 1st born child of those who want it

he's loosened up his collar

nowadays he'll take your 2nd born, if its the right color

Does anyone have one of these? Just curious   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US3s2DVy4EA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US3s2DVy4EA)    "Recorded May 01, 2003 in Los Angeles, CA - Henry Fonda Theater.

from enterruption.com : The Best way to start off '08: the mighty Melvins live in '03!! Buzz, Dale, and Kevin, recorded by their longtime soundman, Kurt Schlegel, in Los Angeles, CA, at the beginning of their Spring 2003 US tour with Tomahawk.

Song list: At A Crawl, Black Stooges, Night Goat, Revolve/Brain Center At Whipples, Let It All Be, Hooch, Mombius Hibatchi, The Bloat, The Bit.

Mastered by Mell Dettmer (Earth, Sunn, ASVA, Boris). Cover art by Alison Elizabeth Taylor.

Edition 500x copies, shades of pink...ish vinyl.

The vinyl re-issue of the long out-of-print cassette originally released on Enterruption, edition 100x, in early '04."

The cassette is more expensive than the LP but bobpepperpants regularly has the LP version on eBay. Glen may indeed have some copies, but that may have started out as a joke which has become a myth and is on its way to becoming a legend. Unlike Glen, who's been a legend from the start. It's a great LP.

I have one...451/500.

Does anyone have and issue where the spindle hole seems to be WAY too small? Like, it is a fight to get the record on the turntable.

It makes me avoid listening to this as it takes a full 5 minutes of gentle shimmying to get the thing off the platter.

Well, as far as the vinyl goes, the first c.20 all came with a white skull on the centre label (and a spare sticker with a red skull!) and a flyer:
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad93/AKV126C/DSC01179_zpsc5b221ab.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/AKV126C/media/DSC01179_zpsc5b221ab.jpg.html)

The rest of them - about 420 - came with a red skull centre label:
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad93/AKV126C/DSC01178_zpsb75fcec4.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/AKV126C/media/DSC01178_zpsb75fcec4.jpg.html)

Then there was the "Nihilist" version of 40 with crazy vinyl and a regular vinyl, a print and spare labels:
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad93/AKV126C/DSC01181_zpse81e5dda.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/AKV126C/media/DSC01181_zpse81e5dda.jpg.html)

And there's the test pressings - five, I think - on black vinyl which came with an early-numbered edition with the white skull, also with spare labels:
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad93/AKV126C/DSC01180_zpsa8b094ca.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/AKV126C/media/DSC01180_zpsa8b094ca.jpg.html)
