Since Kevin now appears to have left, who do you think was the best / or your favourite melvins bass player?

Lorax - I just thought she was cool, and different for some reason I could never put my finger on.

My favorite albums all have a different bass player.  I kinda went with Kevin on a whim, but it could really be any on any given day. They each have their merits.

i voted for Mark D, but its not really fair to the other choices(excluding Kevin), considering they were more like brief stints than they were actual members of the band.   But if we're talkin stage presence or image with the band, it would be something like this:

1. Mark D.
2. Lorax
3. Lukin
4. JOE
5. Kevin

Mark or Kevin

I've read, that Mark was the first bass player, that buzzo and dale haven't told them what he has to play. And I think this also applys to Kevin.
The trilogy and HAT are really masterpieces

I like to imagine her playing the opening part of Night Goat, but it wasn't really her.

1. Trevor Dunn
2. Jeff Pinkus
3. Steven McDonald
4. Jared Warren & Coady Willis
5. Mike Dillard

Overall?

Deutrom
Warren
Pinkus
Preston
Rutmanis
Dunn
Lukin
Lorax

Haven't heard any McDonald yet, but I'm sure he'll be a great addition.

ill probably be booed for this but, Deutrom dosent hold a candle to Rutmanis in my book.  The sounds that come out of that bass when Kevvo plays is mesmerizing.  Mark D is a master of the fundamentals.

Booooooooooooo. Kevin killed, don't get me wrong. Mark D can't be dismissed, though. He played like a guitar player, and a creative one at that. It absolutely stinks that he and the band are no longer friends and won't be playing together anytime soon.

Kevin and Mark are both important to the history of the Melvins and both approach the bass differently. Kevin is an adventurous noise rocker that will play things that a studied musician would play on the bass, and especially a studied musician who is primarily a guitar player. Using a slide on bass and creating the sonic landscapes he would create during the HAT era are very unique to him. Mark D is a totally different kind of animal, he approaches chords and harmony in a way a studied musician/guitarist would. Both are 100% relevant in the world of music - just different flavors.

It's one of those things that allows for a larger musical landscape.

And yeah. I am super bummed that things ended horribly between Mark D and Melvins. I would love to see him return at some point - but - ain't going to happen. I can totally relate too, there is a band/musician that I once played in that under no circumstances outside of millions of dollars would I even consider playing with again.

On the other hand, sadcorps is all about um, Steven and .... Mark D?!  :-k

For my Melvins rock and roll bass, I love Steven and Mark D.

For my Melvins noise and outside of the box bass, I love Kevin.

For my Melvins grunge and mega heavy bass, I love Joe.

For my Melvins sweet ass vocals with mega heavy bass with the greatest bass tone ever, I love Jared.

For my Melvins old school, nostalgia, return to my youth and feel like a teenager again bass, I love Matt and Lorax.

For my Melvins upright bass and fun guy to talk about KISS and Gene Simmons, I love Trevor.

For my Melvins redneck southern-fried LSD drenched bass, I love Pinkus.

I wish that I could create a frankenstein monster of all of them!!!

This could be a different question if you were to ask: Who's the better live player?

Pinkus was badass last summer.

Stevie not so much.. he should give up those leg kicks on stage.

I feel basically opposite as you do about these two. Pinkus was easily my least favorite bassist I've seen perform with The Melvins while McDonald is in my top 3 (Warren, Rutmanis, McDonald).

This is kind of remarkable. Pinkus stock was so high just last summer and now it's falling so fast. I saw Pinkus 4 times. I think I even saw his first show with the band. That night, he was pretty sloppy. He hadn't seemed to gel with the band yet. The next 3 times I saw him, much, much better. Maybe that's what Poop Grenade encountered with Steven? Who knows? Maybe I'm talking out my ass?  :D

I'm not a fan of Steve live. I find it hokey and distracting from the live experience. i want to be blown away by the sound and spontaneous intensity. I don't want my eyes to constantly go back to watching him mess around. I passed on the last Detroit show at El Club.

my three Melvins bassists are
Kevin, Mark and Jared.

Steven is #1, followed by Mark at #2, then Kevin at #3. I think these are the three bassists that have added the most to the sound of the Melvins while helping to re-invent the band with their addition.

But I still love the rest of them too! And Jared's tone. C'mon that tone rules.

In a way i agree with you there but at the same time i still wonder what you mean by that. Was Kevin in the band when you got into them maybe? Could that be why? I mean Jared was on bass longer than Kevin was. If we're talking duration of course.

For me its because Kevin was a total outcast, unique player and lovable weirdo. They're all the epitome of the Melvins.

The newer bassists just seem like guest appearances and they are that as much as buzz admits to not wanting a bassist anymore.

It doesn't really matter to me who's best or longest or what have you. I don't know, for me it's just Kevin was so perfect a fit for the band.
