I'm new here (to the message board) I'm a 23 (going on 24 soon) year old male from the midwest here in the states. I've played guitar for about 6 or 7 years now, and The Melvins (Buzz) has been a big influence on me as a guitar player along with a few other players from the late 80's and early to mid 90's. I wish I was hip enough to have found The Melvins on my own or perhaps clam that I heard them before Kurt Cobain raved about them, but like most people I heard about them through him. I bought there record because him (kurt) and Dave Grohl wouldnt stop talking about them (the Melvins) after I heard it I knew why. I just wanted to take a few seconds here and I guess share how I "found" the band and all that jazz.

This is probably the most common way (among young people in particular) to find out about The Melvins.
I started listening to Nirvana when I was 11. 1 year later I started to discover many other WA/CA bands such as Melvins, L7, Mudhoney, Green River, Alice In Chains and so on...
I found a whole ton of bands through Nirvana, my favourites being the Pixies and the Melvins, and then through the Melvins I was introduced to all of Mike Patton's music.

i usually feel like one of the only dudes who did not find the melvins through nirvana sometimes. i found them at a record shop and thought as dorky as they sound, they must kick imense ass. thankfully i was right! :D
A while back, I posted this here. It was from Entertainment Weekly of all places. This article is what initially got me curious about the Melvins. I liked Nirvana and still do. So this Houdini album seemed interesting so I bought it on cassette tape at the time and the sickness continues to this day 12 years later. Anyway here is the article:

About how this punk-metal trio from his hometown of Aberdeen, Wash., influenced the younger Cobain and fellow Northwestern noisemakers like Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. I think you are right on that the majority of people who listen and are fans of the Melvins heard about them from Kurt talking about them in the press. I am sure Buzz and Dale knew this was going to be an added benefit to signing with Atlantic and letting Kurt even help produce parts of Houdini. It was a good business decision that most bands would not have survived. I am glad that the Melvins did not compromise on their music. But from what I understood about that time was that they gave the Melvins complete creative control to put out anything they wanted or I think they would not have signed. That was due in part to Nirvana's clout being such a money maker that Atlantic signed them sight unseen. They thought they were going to cash in on the "hot" grunge music wave already two years strong :lol:. Anyway welcome to the forum.

i first heard the melvins on the b-side of a tape given to me when i was a fourth grader. i didnt understand the significance of it......i've got it down pat pretty much over a decade later. took me a while.
i figure that if it hadnt happened that way it most certainly would have happened through nirvana..... i was/am? a huge fan of them as well.

In hindsight, I'm glad the Melvins didn't take any shit from those fans. Not even for the sake of their friendship with Tool. It shows that the Melvins respect themselves.

Alchemy records comp, back in 88. Neurosis pain of mind tour, the band before Neurosis was created was Christ on Parade. Anyhow that is when i first heard and went and seen them~melvins~, I think Ozma was just released. It really wasnt about the Seattle sound..or this later labeled grunge, it was , well for me at least the slow hard and fresh sound. where as back then, fast was the approach. and over done by many. Only Black Flag my war got it right. And the Melvins repackaged it .the music was intense. I never ever liked or followed the Seattle grunge stuff. IMO it was to weak with no flavor.The only band other then the Melvins from this area was Tad. Why people forget about this band , I have not a clue. I am sure there was some others, but none i recall or even mention above. Alot of people talk large about post Atlantic records and the almighty Kurt Corbain. But for me hearing all the post Eggnog were somewhat of a let down and I cringed to think that mtv and the commercialized consumers were even allowed to be exposed to such amazing music. They certainly did not deserve it or earn it. it was packaged for the masses. I had some hate for the melvins in these years, but never missed a show,nor would i pass up on a chance to hear the latest. Lysol and stonerwitch were somewhat holding the line. I later came to terms and grew up, and as dale/buzz mention in several interviews, they were paid to make music. so all is well and forgiven. they didnt stop and roll over dead. they kept going, reinvented themselves over and over. and allowing us to hear with various artist. I seen them recently with pinkus, which is so cool, being a butthole surfers fan. and this upcoming one with leary. It is like a dream come true. so yea as i reach my mid fortys, I have seen them come and go, and some come back , thank god. The music back then was really magical. so when i hear people talk about the 50,60,70 music ..i get that. And some, like the melvins are able to keep it real. So yea thank you buzz/dale and the others who along the way, for saving us from the dull, grey void the that them rats/snakes seem to keep pushing on us.<green day/barf> you guys have never let me down. I could go on and on, But i really need to mention..Damn dudes, scott kelly and the venom cover. ding dang doom two kicks in the kisser...like venom is up there in the best of the rest, and here you guys come along and ...words can describe, many many thanks~)/gasp

I listened first in Jr. High because of Kurt talking them up. Didn't delve deep just a track on a compilation album but I was not an immediate fan. Soon after, the Revolve music video was in high rotation on Local Public Access Television in Dayton Ohio. i liked the song and the video but didn't delve deeper yet. Not until Ipecac Records started and I saw Fantomas on their first tour and was blown away buy the whole band. I bought the crybaby and liked it but as an album it was all over the place and I didn't buy the rest of the trilogy. It was the Jello and Melvins second album that really impressed me, how tight they were as a band. After that full blown obsession kicked in.
The first time I heard them I didnt even realize it, until years later. It was sweet willy rollbar on the tony hawk skateboarding game, always like the song but didnt realize it was melvins until I fully discovered them after tryimg to find new music and ending up looking them up as I had read their name on the nirvana wikipedia page a lot. I first heard hooch and was taken aback by the drums and lyrics, despite not fully getting the music I still liked it enough so I was compelled to go back again and again to listen to the few songs I discovered because it sounded so different than anything I'd ever heard. The song that really sold me was creepy smell off Ozma, buzzs guitar tone is so amazing on that one and the drums are perfectly and intracately coordinatedand syncs with the guitar so well. Then I saw a video of hooch live and coady was blocking my view of dale so I was like who the hellIis that, he's actually damn good! I looked that up then discovered how they melded with big business and were still making music when I thought melvins were retired or something. I was so happy they were still relevant I was so naive lol

my memory is a bit fuzzy but I heard them through tony hawks game maybe around 01-04.. in those years for sure. Many years later probably in 07' or 06',I looked up their music online hearing about them through the influene section on nirvanas wikipedia(I know lol) but I really liked hooch and a couple other songs (queen, snake appeal, matt alec, etc), then dowloaded some albums on my ipod. Thats when I came across creepy smell and many others and got completely hooked. After more research online of their live videos I found the live video of hooch with coady blocking dale thus me doing more research as to who coady was then I found out about a senile animal then their merge with big business and was thrilled to know melvins were still alive and kicking more so than most bands, regardless of age. It was cool I finally found a band that kicked ass, had some history yet was still relevant. There was just something special about hearing a senile animal knowing it had came out so recently and it was better than so much other music coming out at the time, it made me feel like part of something special if thats not corny lol! So I unknowingly heard them at the turn of the century and fully discovered them around 06', 07'
