You should definately buy it if you find it available somewhere. It's worth it. Ok, I'll admit I skip the first track "shit storm" because it's just crap. But the rest of the CD is pure quality Melvins stuff. My 2 favorite songs on the disc are "Youth of America" and the re-recorded version of "Revolve". Definately quality.

Ozma is a great album.
Hell yeah
Im sitting here listening to Electroretard and I havent reallt thought about it before but the production on YOA is really good!
thats all!
I just wanted to say that :)))
totally agree man! its 14 minutes of magic! it's one take too!

i liked too Klump, but no 100%, 80% is good IMO!
hehe, its funny a little thing, I bet most of it would have bought it just for YOA , and those remixes and covers are actually great to :))
I was really lucky and found it on a nice price shelf a few years ago :D
Apparently on the Wipers version of Youth of America, there are something like 20 overdubbed guitars. Greg Sage admits he went a little overboard!
holy shit!
I was just listening to Electroretard and I think it's an amazing CD. I wish they would do more "Reworkings" like this. 'Youth of America" is probably my favourite cover they've done.

from listening to the original song over and over, I find that very hard to belive
I prefer these versions of Revolve and Lovley Butterflies :D
and the artwork is to die for! (insert gay artfart voice)
I agree with Klump, but I might go as far as saying I prefer all the new versions on Electroretard? Yes, I do.

I've just listened to the Wipers' version a couple of times. There could easily be 20 guitar tracks on it. They don't have to be all playing at once, you know.
Quotethere are something like 20 overdubbed guitars
While speaking of overdubbing guitars in a recording, you are most likely talking about adding layers to a prerecorded melody/riff.
In that sense, there's no way there are 20 guitars layered on that track.
It's simply to thin sounding. You can hear clearly when the feedback is dropping from the recorded guitar/s, it would probably sound slightly more confusing with 20 guitars on top of eachother.
QuoteThere could easily be 20 guitar tracks on it. They don't have to be all playing at once, you know.
If that is the case, that the "20 guitars" have been recorded in bits and pieces here and there, then what's the big deal? And quite frankly if it takes 20 guitars to create that kind of noise, then I'm disappointed (don't get me wrong I love the track as much as the next guy)
You know, you can make A LOT of noise with just 2-3 guitars...
Ps. Not trying to kick up any fuzz between the two of us, I just don't hear the 20 guitars.
Quote from: GalvanoPs. Not trying to kick up any fuzz between the two of us, I just don't hear the 20 guitars.
Yeah, I know.
I think you're missing the point, though. Greg Sage was basically saying that he spent so long layering all these guitar tracks on top of each other when, in retrospect, it was completely unnecessary. He
could have achieved pretty much the same thing with just two or three.
Dale's drum solo on YOA is incredable. I can't express my feelings about it in words. I find myself cranking up the volume when it begins.
Yeah, I can relate to you anonymous dude, why don't you get a log in?
When that drum solo comes on, and I am in the privacy of my car, I crank that part up to max volume.
The ony other song I can think of that made me crank the volume is Pat Benatar "Heartbreaker" where she sings with no music.
Quote from: GrimReaperThe ony other song I can think of that made me crank the volume is Pat Benatar "Heartbreaker" where she sings with no music.
Pat Benatar?
I also really like their amazing version of "Interstellar Overdrive" - it is pretty faithful to the original, even down to the extreme stereo panning near the end.
(Actually, the original was in mono. Back when Pink Floyd recorded this, stereo was a bit of a novelty and not much time was spent on the stereo version, nor was it taken very seriously. The band, and Syd Barrett in particular, were supposedly unhappy with the stereo version.)
Hey all.
I just bought this over the net (some places still have first hand copies for $10 american) and, having only heard Youth of America, I'd like to know what you guys think of it.
Cheers.
great disc. underappreciated. i listened to it recently a few times and liked it alot again. can't really complain about any of it. i love me some lovely butterflies.
Skip Shit Storm unless you can find it reversed on the Net anywhere...I think Anaconda has a link if he reads this topic. As for the rest of it, I think it's a great little record. It's the first Melvins disc I found, so it's got some sentimental value for me...the versions of Gluey, Revolve and Missing are fantastic. I prefer the originals of Lovely Butterflies and Tipping the Lion, but they're not bad at all and the Pink Floyd track's not bad too. Haven't really listened to that one too much though. In short, yeah it's a good record and well worth owning simply because it's gone and gone seemingly for good now...
Shit Storm is still useless in reverse if you already have about 3 copies of Revolve like I do. But ElectroRetard I think is a fantastic album, one of my favourite Melvins albums cause I prefer all the reworkings on here. This was also my first Melvins record I stumbled across, so maybe I'm a little biased.
I put in the back my my cd collection (even though its alphapbetcally aranged..) when i first got it and one day when i was re-alphabetizing my extensive collection, i found it and put it on and really like that version of shitstorm.

I much prefer the original version of Revolve.
"missing" is a great song, and exemplifies what I love about the melvins, it's a totally different style of song for them that they pull off no sweat, and Buzz isn't afraid to put the guitar down and let the bass and drums to the work. They make EVERYTHING work for them, THEIR way.
thats a very bright observation, and quite true - sign up brother!
i mean of course kevin is all over that song, he played it a million times
with the cows, and buzz does know when to play and when not to, he's good about that.
Just got it and I think it's pretty cool. I like it better than Honky. I will trade an " Electoretard " CDR for a CDR of " Stag ". Please to include the cover!

Brilliant Album. Fantastic really. Hey - I like Shitstorm. YOA is rippin - ican't believe that song didn't be come an instant hit in Dance Clubs around the World. i absolutely love Missing and Lovely Butterflies. and what a Glorious experience it was to catch the 20th Anniversary show at the Capitol theatre in olympia Washington and witness Buzz (King Buzzo! Please!) completely Blow that song away. Yikes.
Interstellar overdrive is a Beautiful version (Tribute?) to Pink Floyd. i love that song and most early Floyd.
Well that's my opinion on Electro-Retard. seeya
I like it, but I just don't play it much.
I get my YOA fix off of different live sets.

Are the Melvins still going to re-release Electroretard? A long time ago someone said they talked to Dale, who mentioned that it will indeed get re-released with some bonus tracks, since Mans Ruins is not around anymore. I already have Electroretard, but if there were enough bonus tracks on there i'd buy it again.
i was wondering the same thing

Yeah, he slays on "Gluey Porch Treatments", even though it's 47 seconds long...
Or "Bitten Into Sympathy", as it's leaning over more to that tune. Take your pick.

where did you read this?
It was from the news section of "Metal Hammer" magazine, i think around early 1999, not sure of the date as I only have a clipping of it, but it was around the time before the release of the Trilogy.
Here's the quote: "We're doing one album for Man's Ruin Records, which is a reworking of some old stuff," says drummer Dale Crover. "We're also doing covers of the Wipers 'Youth Of America' and a song by Throbbing Gristle, which is a major noisefest. The album will probably be called 'The Germans'.
The rest of the piece mentions the upcoming trilogy and Crover's side project, Altamont.

Hmm the TG track didn't make it on to Electroretard. Too bad. A shame they never covered TG's Five Knuckle Shuffle when Kevin was still playing bass.

yeah i just popped in that Aenema CD, which i haven't listened to in like 5 years. And I must say, it sure sounded boring this time around.
I ordered Electroretard from Tower Records two weeks ago and today the CD arrived. After looking at it for a while (it's a X-mas present so I can't listen to it yet) I noticed that the spine of the case says "MR2002" but in the top of the liner notes from inside the booklet, where it appears a huge Kozik drawing about two kids killing lambs, it says "MR2001". So in which year this CD was released?
you know a christmas present or gift for myself.
Good observation.
mmm I thought the number in the UPC code was for the catalog number instead of the release date.
Well, based on that, your initial question is flawed then, since neither of
those numbers refer to the date it was released. They're catalog numbers. 8)
Anyways, I've done some digging;

Yeah, try independant record shops...I still see it about occasionally. I would buy it whenever I see it but then I always think of the joy I'd experience if I was searching through the Melvins section in a shop and found a copy of Your Choice Live or something, so leave it be for other fans.
I'm just that nice.
Why did Man's Ruin go bankrupt anyhow? Would've thought with bands like QOTSA, Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin and the Melvins they'd have kept their heads above water...
I have always heard that Man's Ruin went under 'cause they overextended themselves and just plain put out too much stuff. That makes sense to me 'cause they were releasin' like 2 to 4 discs a month for a while.

Electroretard 12" test press sold for 400 bucks on eBay
So, here we go with another mind-blowing item for your consideration...
Once upon a time, Man's Ruin released the CD version of the MELVINS "Electroretard" recording...
now, the PLAN was to follow the CD release with the 12" vinyl release...
but it never happened.
Sadly, this was all going down during the collapse of the label...the process of making the vinyl was started, but the money ran out and it was never fully realized...
All that ever came to exist of the the MUCH-ANTICIPATED 12" version of "Electroretard" were 10 copies of the test pressing.
THIS IS ONE OF THEM.
Yes, friends, ONE OF ONLY TEN COPIES IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!
As if that weren't enough to blow your mind...it is UNOPENED, UNTOUCHED BY HUMAN HANDS!!!
It is in the original sealed plastic wrap!
There was no one sheet made for the 12", simply because it was never manufactured. Sorry, but I have no copies of the CD version one sheet.
I was once in a "special" situation in regards to the Man's Ruin label and I have items that no one else has.
Furthermore, I am now willing to sell them to lucky mofos like YOU!!!
This is the LAST COPY of this that I have that I will sell.

Nice one! How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?
I honestly do not remember, but given the exchange rate at the time(England is expensive), I probably paid $30.
Bring on that remix album, I don't give two shits about who else is dipping their fingers into the pie. As long as Dale and Buzz are involved with it you know it is gonna kick ass.

you said dipping...
actually electroretard was my first Melvins album!
I started listening to them around the time the trilogy came out, but its impossible to get these albums in stores here.
but after I got lucky and found that in a small store in another city I found out that THE INTERNET was a great place to order CDS, so after that my wallet was thin very often.
mp3s made me a Melvins fan.
and now I have bought and paid for all their stuff.
I still don't have Electroretard! Mabye I'll be a Christmas gift this year...
search my back posts, i put up mp3s of it, as it's out of print.
I think I saw it on Amazon for 999.99,-
When I first got into the melvins my favorite record store had houdini, stonerwitch, pigs, electroretard and melvins/fantomas. I came so close to getting electroretard and just never really got around it. When I did get around to it it was fucking gone and I learned it was out of print.
Yes, I have been kicking myself ever since.
didn't someone generously post the whole album on some thread?
i believe it was anaconda.
maybe it's still up for the people who don't have it.

Yes, I think I just saw that post.
I've got it............................PM me and i'll burn it for you if you can't get the MP3??????????????????? :-k
If that doesn't piss off the Melvins?????????????? I myself wouldn't feel too guilty having purchased virtually all of their CDs and most of those Cds on vinyl as well.
when i found this at a record store it was in the corner by itself with a hand writen label that said "weird stuff"
i thought that was funny :?

The Melvins would be so proud to see that labeled onto one of their albums.

its fucking out of print dude. I don't think the melvins would be too pissed seeing as there are no more to sell. if you buy one your money is going to some jackass on ebay, not the melvins.
I would venture to say that most all of the core people here have purchased every single melvins release available and wouldn't try to cheat the melvins out of a penny.
It's one of their best album covers. Kozik did the illustration.

I love the nice nazi/white power vibe!

I want a rerelease! With bonus track! Hasn't that been promised for half a decade now?

yeah...too bad theyve been too busy releasing a dozen other records.
I don't think it's going to happen. At the time they mentioned that, Kozik and MansRuin had gone
bankrupt, but now he's back on his feet in a big way I don't think he wants to release the master tapes
and artwork to anyone else to cash in.

You've got a point there. But maybe if we all chip in and the price is right
My favorite part about Electroretard is the fact that they covered the Wipers' "Youth of America," one of my favorite songs ever. The Melvins' version is almost as good as the Wipers one.
For those of you who don't know, the Wipers are one of the great unsung punk bands of the 80's and if you haven't already bought their 3-CD $17 box sex I highly suggest you do so.
Hey shit, I was about to recommend that box! Got mine for many years alreday but I also saw it for that price a week ago or something like that.

It certainly is a good box.
For now I go as far as stating it's the best box I have.
The only box you'd want.
I said "box sex" instead of "box set" and no one seemed to notice....

I guess I rather scan words than actually reading them.
Someone stabbed my copy of E-tard and it only plays up to Revolve. Thank God YOA survived.
I was wondering how the jewel case got damaged but didn't notice the knife tip gouge in the cd until I tried to play it. :(
shit grimy,
let me know and I'll send you a DL of it. lord knows I owe it to you. grim always pulls his weight in the sharing department.

We'll I took the advice of The Melvins board and went ahead and ordered it. I like Youth of America so hopefully I'll like the rest.
The altered mix of Tipping The Lion is swell.
Been trying to get this on soulseek,
it's officially out of print.
this is growing on me a lot. i hope they reissue it. love the new versions of tripping the lion and revolve
also is the RMS 2000 a real thing? i tried googling it but it doesn't really seem to exist. it's in the credits saying that buzz/dale/kevin all played it.
RMS 2000 stands for Roland Modular Studio. Something like that.
It's a drum box, mixer, sampler, synth and studio all in one keyboard.
Sonic Youth put out a side project CD using one as well. I believe Peaches
uses the same portable unit for her live performances.
On the one hand, Damn.
On the other hand, Awesome!
i dunno... to me the sparkling goodness of this c.d. is the re-done version of Lovely Butterflies...and Gluey Porch Treatments.
For me it's always YOA. That song is amazing, and their cover blows the doors off anything on 14 Songs for Greg Sage and the Wipers. Anyone seen the House Of Blues Vid? I have a really low quality Windows Media version, but man they do an amazing live version of YOA on there. They also played it at the 20th anniversary show at the Capitol Theater, and that was one of the high points of that night.
I just told him. hes furious.

Electroretard has now been pressed up on vinyl by some Euro bootlegger. My review of the sound quality forthcoming. My copy is "in the mail..."

Bootlegs are bullshit, almost universally horrible quality, and harm bands/artists.

Addendum: Well my copy arrived and it's excellent quality for a bootleg. The sound is amazingly good. I was afraid this was going to be like the Houdini bootlegs, which are horrible. It's pressed up on heavy-weight vinyl with very cool, full-colour labels. The jacket is a large 25" x 25" square of card stock, printed on 4 of the 8 sides, and then folded into a jacket. I have not seen these anywhere but Discogs. There are two copies available now. I bought mine from seller: Irenasl. She is a reputable seller. Here's the link, if anyone's interested:

Well, the problem for me is that I hate CDs (apart from the
Letterpress editions, but that's the rare exception). I would just as soon have the MP3s, and leave it at that! I had to wait a very long time for Melvins to put out
Trilogy on vinyl. It doesn't look like they are going to get around to
Electroretard any time soon either! I have been collecting/trading/selling vinyl for 40+ years now (Melvins since
Ozma). I feel no guilt in buying a bootleg. I definitely have supported this band through thick and thin! As far as bootleg quality goes, you're right. Most of the time, it sucks. Check out my brief review of this one however...

Wouldn't they have just put the cd on the bootleg record though?
Well this whole issue just cracks me up!! Because if, and when, Melvins ever get around to pressing it up, I would be the first in line!! I DID buy a copy of the Letterpress edition (as well as several others) and am usually at the front of the line at the merch. table. I didn't just buy ONE copy of the Hammerhead split, I bought all 5 variants. The same goes for the 1983 10" (I will pick up #5 at the NYE bash but have the four released thus far). Sadly, I only picked up 2 variants of Freak Puke (and was lucky enough to get the very two I wanted). The other three just don't appeal to me. And, like I said, I have been collecting Melvins, feverishly, since Ozma. I have paid good $ to their various labels (and directly to the band on the self-released Letterpress editions). T-shirts, posters, and lets not forget to mention all those tickets to their shows!! Honestly, buying a bootleg vinyl copy of Electroretard has hardly diverted any of MY funds to the band. If Melvins are unhappy about the bootleg (and they have every right to be) THEN PRESS IT UP MEN!! As it is now, Melvins have lost all control of Artistic direction with this bootleg. I have a strong feeling that someone who was once in a "privileged" position has gotten a hold of the masters. It does not sound like a rip from the CD. Not so many years ago, someone posted on this very topic that they had those 12" test pressings (and sold them for $400 on eBay)... Makes me wonder... I must add here that I have no idea what legal or contractual issues there must be lurking in the shadows of this recording. I am an Artist myself and would be insanely enraged if this happened to me. I regret posting the link, but don't you think that will just make people want it more? I know that I am like most folkes. We always want what we can't have!!
The tour announcement comes as Ipecac Recordings' confirms the June 2 reissue of the Melvins' 2001 release, Electroretard. The 8-song album features the line-up of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Kevin Rutmanis.
Re-issue is coming!
