Title: The Melvan
Post by: skullbraineggs on December 06, 2005, 07:12:30 PM
I grew up in Montesano and lived there my whole life until a few years ago.  My best friend had a band that was excellent and in 9th grade opened for the Melvins at the RCKNDY in Seattle.  Anyway, my buddy eventually ended up with the Melvan, the same on that Kurt drew the Kiss picture on with magic markers.  Just thought Id share some pics I took a few weeks ago of it.  Little worse for the wear, though hes been trying to get it running again.

Later

what a sweet ride, probably contains some Lori, Dale and Buzz DNA.
So that took them thru ozma, bullhead and lysol tours?

Actually not sure what era it was used.  Ill ask my buddy when he got it and that might shed some light.

I STILL live in Montesano  :x  What's the name of your buddy's band that opened at the RCKCNDY? Is the Melvan still parked in Montesano? There's a bunch of people still living here that are of the Buzzo high school years vintage.  One of them is even Mike Dillard the first Melvins drummer!  :D

I know Mike pretty well.  Very cool guy.  Have seen his band a number of times.  Saw em in Oly a few months ago at the 4th Ave Tav.  The Melvan is still in Montesano.  My buddies band was called No Talent.  They broke up years ago.

I was at the 4th Ave. Tavern at  that show too. Sat with Dillard at his table, I probably saw you or met you that night. They played "queen", Dillard's a good drummer. You must live in Oly now eh, 'cause I know you were just at the Oly show. Didn't you video tape it?

Great post! That van should be restored and sold at auction.

I live in Vancouver now.  Just came up to Oly to watch Mikes band and the first band.  The guy who sang and played guitar in the band that opened that night is my buddy that owns the van.   I was one of the people who filmed that night.  The shorter fatter one.

Title: Re: The Melvan
Post by: skullbraineggs on December 07, 2005, 05:46:36 PM
I believe they are calling themselves King Fu.  They have been on and off for a few years I believe.
Title: Re: The Melvan
Post by: Smellis on December 07, 2005, 05:51:28 PM
Yeah they go by King Fu. They have also gone by Hot Carl and Jupiter Jackson among others. My buddy from work said he used to do a fair amount of drinking with Buzz in that Melvan back in the day. Mostly Potter's whiskey, and Rheinlander and Schmidt beer because it was cheap! He enjoyed the pics and said they brought back memories.

No I graduated with Crover in Aberdeen. I later moved to Montesano, long after Buzz moved to SanFrancisco. I didn't hang out with the Montesano crowd back in high school, and only saw Buzz when he was in Aberdeen. I didn't know him really well at the time, but I remember watching him play back in '86 and thinking that it was the loudest, hardest, wierdest shit I had ever heard. They were not trying to sound like any other band, they were doing they own original stuff when everyone else was busy trying to learn Maiden and Priest riffs. Even back then Buzz was doing the tantric chanting kind of thing, and I had never seen a guy crush a set like Dale. It shocked the hell out of me the first time I ever saw Dale play because he was really mello at school and not agressive or anything. The guy just completely changed behind his kit like he was possessed. That Melvan to me is priceless, I hope your buddy hangs on to it because it's a treasure trove of memories for a lot of people. Buzz drove it across country several times. Sure it's just an old vehicle, but it's cool. How many people would like to own the Melvan? That's sweet.

It gives me a nice warm feeling inside to know that
even though it doesnt run anymore, at least your buddy
had the good sense to hang onto it and let it rest in a
nice covered carport instead of being sold for scrap.
Title: Re: The Melvan
Post by: skullbraineggs on December 08, 2005, 04:35:13 PM
I know that it will never be sold for scrap.  He has put a lot of effort into getting it running again, but that takes a lot of money too and thats the problem.  I think someday it will run again, but who knows when.

Buzz was selective about who he would let in the door for practice at Dale's. My brother used to have to stand in the alley and couldn't come in because he was too young and a pest. The "cling-ons" as Buzz called them, could have a pass and come in. It was the infant stages of the opinionated Buzzo that we have all come to know and love in his present form.

Smellis! Tell us more stories about the Melvins in their early days! :P
Title: Re: The Melvan
Post by: Smellis on December 09, 2005, 02:08:22 PM
Uh-oh, I wondered if that was going to happen. Well, it was a wonderful time of days of yore; filled with chirping birds, wildflowers, marijuana smoke and 40's of Olde English 800 malt liquor. I know that Buzz and Dale and Cobain and others have said that growing up in Aberdeen in the 80's sucked, but I really had a great time. Sure there wasn't much to do, but what we did find to do kicked ass, I thought. I lived 3 blocks down from Crover on the same street. When they would practice I would tell my dad that I was going to the library downtown to do research for something at school (before the internet). He must have wondered if they served malt liquor at the library when I returned home on a few occasions. Anyway, Dale and Buzz were just friendly, funny and just great guys. They have not changed a bit after all these years. Buzz has a twisted hilararious sense of humor, and what some people perceive as arrogance is really just his way of having fun. I am sure there must be others lurking on this board who were around back in the really old days. There are others who were a part of the Melvins early jam sessions in Montesano when Mike Dillard was the drummer. I did not not go to any of those but have a few friends who did. Remember, these were just guys fucking around and having fun like so many of us did or are still doing. I just think it's cool as hell that they are still around and creating new music after so long, and have so many classics behind them.

smell,  like I said:  your my hero.         I bet your one of the few cling-ons from the EARLY days who still has any interest or connection today.
I swear to GOD (donny baker anyone?)  your fuckin COOL as SHIT.

(fucking grew up down the street from dale crover,  ........  how cool is that?)

Glen, I know. Back in the day he was just a regular guy I went to school with, and he is still just a regular guy now. He just has a job that beats the shit out of mine. He has worked his ass off to get where he is, and I have to give him credit. I don't take for granted a moment of the high school days. But, it just wasn't the Melvins, it was the whole thing back then in Aberdeen. I probably should have carried their gear around and just went touring like a motherfucker in the Melvan. On the other hand, I wouldn't have my two kids and I can't live without them now. life's good, it all works out. The Melvins are still making new music and touring, and I never miss them when they come to town. Buzz and Dale haven't changed a bit after all their success. Big Biz is coming to town here on 12/18 and I'll be there. I'm looking forward to the next chapter, What the hell kind of circus will a tandem drum set be? Jebus Christo the next tour is going to kick major Melvin ass.  :D

Tomight I was drinking with Dillard's cousin and he said that he played bass before Lukin. He said that Buzz only played 4 chords and that was it. He was talking about how Buzzo was barely even plinking on the guitar and he was just fucking around on the bass and Buzz was just learning. My friend thinks it's funny and I told him that he is a legend because he is the first Melvins bassist!!! :x 8)

Been gone for a while, but anyway, I learned that the Melvan probably took them around the country thru 86' or so.  I'll try to get some more info on it soon.  My buddy got it from Lukins parents after he left.  He still has the registration with Lukins name on it.

I got a 76 Dodge Street van off a guy at work. Payed $200 for it. Towed it home. The engine had three burnt exhaust valves and one intake that was feathered pretty bad.  It was missing so many parts I lived in the junk yards of Kent, Washington for months. The first day I took it on the road I realized all the brakes were fucked up and had to replace just about everything.

I can have the Melvan running in a month.

I would if I could find it!  Swear, I've looked through it many times.  I will if I see it, but it isn't to great.  Just a letter I wrote to Brian and the pics we've all seen posted here.  I'll try again though.

This is some great history behind the melvins.  They've been around since I was born.  1983 and I've only been a fan since 2002 when HAT first came out.  I wish I had gotten into them earlier but oh well, they're still around and kickn' hard.  The first show I seen was with Tomahawk, the geek tour.

Hey Idlehanz, what's wrong with the inside of the van buddy? You sure enjoyed being in
there last weekend!! I just found all the registration papers and proofs of insurance! We actually
took the Melvan to the RKNDY show back in '93 or '94 and the night before that the Melvins
played the "Backstage" at the Capitol Theater in Olympia. We gave Buzz and Dale a ride from
Buzz's parents place to the venue that evening! I think they got a kick out of that! As far as the last
time I actually operated the Melvan would have been probably back in '97. I made a 4-track
recording of it running the last time I had it fired up! I should figure out a way to post that sound byte
on this website! I recorded it running because I knew that it would be a very long time before I would
hear that sweet sound of those 8 valves. Plus, the exhaust was shot so it sounded really mean! Let me
know if you could help me out with getting the sounds of the Melvan to this site, OK?

Hey King of Diamonds, I dug out the recording of the Melvan yesterday and
I am going to mix it from the master this afternoon. When you come back to
mix "Nightgoat", maybe we could transfer the sweet sounds of the Melvan to
this site. Let me know what you think of them apples! OK?

If you make an .mp3 of the melvan engine growling, I'll personally see
that it gets uploaded to the wiki and has a permanent site for hosting
and a link to download.

my source? I am pretty much retarded when it comes to computer
-techy stuff. Remember, I went to Montesano High. Maybe ol' King of

The Melvan thing has kind of run it's course.  It was a hot topic for a while, then the whole ebay thing kind of killed interest in it, as it was sold, then it wasn't, then it was, then it wasn't....Now it has sold, but for far less than anyone ever thought it would. It's still an interesting piece of history.  In, and after high school, we'd smoke out in that thing, tye dye shirts, and once recorded vocals in it.

I should clarify. When I say "we", I mean myself, the guy who owned it, and another friend.  Nothing to do with the band. This was many years after they had left Grays Harbor.

Not much to tell really.  I did work with him, for a few years.  He wasn't a manager when I worked for him, so he really wasn't my boss .  He did a lot of glares when I'd wear my Melvins shirts in the store.  There were at least 4-5 guys still working at that store that had worked with Buzz when he was there.  I honestly don't remember any stories that might have been told to me.

Nice. Back in the day when we did the cover songs thread, I think we put one at the end of ours and it sounded MUCH worse.  I just don't know where the damn song is anymore.

Whoever bought it from Ben (?) a few years ago. They're expecting the kiss panel to go for 20-40k. Someone is bidding on the spray painted 'no talent' panel, which is real weird, since it was added after Ben got the van. Curious to know how much Ben sold it for, I'm guessing 20k.
