my list would be similar.  i can't listen to ozma.  it sounds like songs that weren't good enough to make it on 10 songs, GPT to me

Thank you anaconda, I wondered how that would sound since I first listened to Electroretard (By the way, I was able to order that absolutely regular here in Switzerland)

Leroy, Set Me Straight goes back to the very beginnings of the band, do you have 26 Songs?

When you hear Set me Straight on Houdini it sounds like a Kurt Cobain influenced track. I hated it, until I realized it was an old song reused for Houdini after listening to 26 Songs.

Anti-vermine Seed is used by the Melvins as a sort of  rest period during live performances. The Altimont/Melvins shows at the beginning of this year used it as a transition between Altamont and Melvins sets. I must admit I was embarassed when I first heard Anti-vermine Seed. Now I like it. I even have the H.A.T. single of Anti Vermine Seed, when I listen to H.A.T. I expect the fading out like on the 45 when I listen to it.

Give more insight on why you hate certain songs, this will cultivate more interesting discussions.

yo Grim, what song from 26 songs eventually became Set Me Straight???

shit, anti-vermin seed is awesome.  it is a 15-minute song! a real song.  not noises and experimental stuff. an actual song.  i admire it greatly

I can never be bothered to listen through Magic Pig Detective...it doesn't even have the brain rotting appeal of Hands First Flower or Hung Bunny...

And yeah, I concur when it comes to all things Spread Eagle. It's really something to miss. Fortunatelyi it's the last track so you can listen to the good parts of Houdini uninterrupted...

you've never heard it all the way through? you know that it starts to rock after about three minutes, right?

Magic Pig Detective is an awesome song, I like how you can hear Buzz inhale before he starts singing.

I lent my copy of Stoner Witch to a guy I work with.  A bad move. He spent a little time in jail and I was without my favorite Melvins release for many months. I started to have withdrawls, so I downloaded some songs off the inernet. One of them was Magic Pig Detective. What I downloaded does not have the singing at the end, it just ends after the feedback. I wonder if this bum copy of the song is going around and that is why some people don't like it.

Set me Straight is song 17 on 26 Songs and is an out take from the 10 Songs sessions. After you hear that version of Set me Straight you will appreciate the Houdini version more.

Some people don't like the cover of "Going Blind", but I really enjoy that song.  Does anyone else here like the Melvins cover of "Going Blind"?

Oh, no I'm well aware of that. It's just that when I want to listen to Stoner all the way through and just lie there I get annoyed at those three minutes of pissery. I don't care how good the second part is (and it is good), that noise at the beginning is worse than nails on blackboard...

And yeah, I love Goin' Blind.

- The 26 songs version of Set Me Straight is quality. The slower and sludgier the better.

fuck that symphony shit!!!

Just go get KISS - "Hotter than Hell"
it has the original 'Going Blind'
and it kicks major fucking ass! that whole
album is like the Melvins text book 101

Check out Parasite and Strange Ways on
that album as well, both smoking Ace Frehley songs!!

Also, Melvins did the Love Theme from the
KISS - "Originals" trilogy!!! yes its true!!

The solo albums and a vinyl trilogy are no coincidence!!
Melvins have always acknowledged and admired KISS openly!!

I think the melvins/kiss thing is kind of a joke though, just from the way they kind of poke fun around it.  I also think that buzz or dale had said at one point in an interview that it was a joke that got blown out of proportion and taken too far or somehting.
Title: tracks i coulda done without
Post by: eddie on December 10, 2003, 10:43:26 AM
i seen kiss with aerosmith this year and they played god of thunder. it doesn't have the drum solo in it that dale does, did the melvins just put that in their for their version?

The Melvins liking kiss is the most tounge in cheek joke ever.  Their is no way they really enjoy kiss.

Gene played with them once.

really? oh, thank sweet christ.  i thought they were serious.  i frickin' hate KISS.  i couldn't figure out how their tastes could stretch to include them.  do they really like elvis?  i actually do like elvis a little.  also, does dale really dig metallica, or is he just friends with the "defector" bassist?  anybody know if they like QOTSA?  ....that's a lot of ?s

Yeah, Buzzo said that about the solo albums...

Still, Gene got a Melvins Army t-shirt out of the joke so it's not all bad.

Rev is right, Instead of getting their ass sued like with Lysol, they turned it around. Like Kiss or not, they could have bankrupted Melvins and Boner.

We will never know if they did the Solo's out of respect or as a joke, but somehow Gene Simmons concured with allowing them to be sold. Gene Simmons doesn't do anything for free. If it was a joke, and it lead them to warm up for Kiss, and have Gene Simmons share the stage with them, it is a marketing stroke of genius.

I do firmly believe that Buzz has copied the Marketing techniques of KISS. There is always people who try to find every available item Melvins related. KISS has the same appeal to collector.

No, the drum solo is another element from Kiss - check out the drum solo on Kiss Alive II. (I think it's II)

Ozma is one of my favorite albums of ANY band. But I realize that most people either really like it or really hate it, so I'm not surprised that some on here can't listen to all of it. I've been blown away by it every time I've heard it for the last 13 years.

Also, I have to disagree with Pure Digital Silence. That is friggin' hilarious, a gem of a joke.

Magic Pig Detective is a great song, IMO. The intro with the pencil sharpener mic'd is fantastic, a bit of drone until the guitar hits a note or three. Plus, it's a great song to lead into the next one (Shevil, I think? Working from memory here guys and gals).

- Is that not 'pigtro'? I'm just guessing to be honest.

- The 26 songs version of Set Me Straight is quality. The slower and sludgier the better.

Pigtro is definitely different from the intro to Magic Pig Detective; the first is WAY more distorted and sparse overall.

Personally I think the original Set Me Straight is decent but repetitive and the Houdini version is junk designed to sound like Nirvana.  The Houdini Live version is in between the two.
