everyone I know who i would force the melvins onto , it all seemed like a painful ordeal for them, to me. They would kick and scream in agony, telling me to turn eye fly's off because it was too much. But, they got hooked and pulled in by the melvins.
these people now listen to Ozma, Bullhead, H.A.T. Lysol and etc. on a regular basis.
was your "conversion" a painful one?
Mine was self-inflicted. Or to put it another way, I was buying some supposed grunge classics while being into Nirvana a few years back and remember picking up 'The Crybaby' and 'Superfuzz Bigmuff' at the same time. Well, needless to say the Mudhoney record got listened to for months on end but then I caved in and bought 'Houdini' and all made sense...
in 90' my bassist dragged me and others to see 'em and was instantly converted, although an intense acid trip mixed with listening to gpt sealed the deal. after that we called it being "melvined" :D
i started off with stoner witch...which really got me to love the melvins.
i would listen to it everywhere for a couple of months.
i'd go over to friend's houses and listen to it while they were talking.
then i became more open to their more non-stoner witch stuff and loved it.
it took a while for me to like lysol...but now i consider it one of my favorites.
now i've bought or heard all of it, except COD and Alive at the fucker club, with a few others.
i love how on the pigs of the roman press conference they say:
"It would be criminally and morally irresponsible not to get behind, promote and endorse The Melvins with every tool (legal and illegal) possible."
I can't think of any other band that would say or get behind that...

Mine was a bit difficult as the songs I downloaded to check out off Napster were mainly from the solo albums and the bootlicker, so I didn't really get a very good idea of the sort of music they made.
Persistence paid off though!

my enlightenment didnt kick in for a while. at first I thought they were just pretty good, but each album i would buy and then listen to just got me more and more enthusiastic about them, realizing their versatility and originality.
i got into them when an older wiser friend moved in with us for a little while. he played them and i didnt know if i did or didnt like what i was hearing but kept wanting to hear more. it was almost like a relief, to hear something so surprising. they changed my perception of music.

i guess we all have bad music periods.
9th grade i really got into tool and they kinda pulled me out of the slump.

I got Houdini and Stonerwich for 8$ each. I had downloaded a few songs by them and thought I'd check them out. I loved some of the songs but others I just couldn't get. The albums just sat there for some time. One of the dudes who worked at the store was really into them so that pushed me to get some more. So I started ordering some albums through them. Got the Crybaby and that threw me off completely. I wasn't into it at all and it was a horrible "starting" point. Finally, I convinced myself to keep trying and ordered HAT. At first I was little thrown back I wasn't too sure what to think so I just let it sit on my shelf. Picked it up a few weeks later and the same reaction but the songs were starting to grow on me. Finally, I decide to order yet another one The Maggot. As soon as I got it I spinned it and the first track Amazon was like a slap in the face I didn't lke it at all and I was starting to think the melvins just weren't for me. I decided to shelf them all. At the time I was really into Tool and that's basicly all I spinned in high school. Fast forward to last year, first year of uni. Out of the blue I decide to spin HAT. From that point on there was no looking back. I was fucking blown away. I finally got it. Since then I've been spinning the Melvins' regularly.

That's funny since for me, HAT was the hardest album to get into.
It took me a few months/spins before I really got into it. But once I did get into it it blew me away.

probably one of my most favorite melvins song of that era.

i first got Stag and Honky. i gotta admit i was one of those fans that didn't know what to think of the more experimental stuff...long story short i got some more albums, downloaded stuff on the internet and it all grew on me. now i don't know what i would do without the Melvins.

I think downloading and bootlegs has helped the melvins lot
I am forced to agree with the glen here. All my fav albums have taken me a certain amount of time to really get into. Only a small minority have blown me away right from the get go.

funny how you remember/associate record-buying experiences...some that have remained with me....buying Eno's "Another Green World" when it came out (vinyl days) @ Alexander's Department store...the price was $ 6.12 & all I had to my name was $ 6.10...the sales person let me slide the two cents....buying Pere Ubu's "The Modern Dance" LP @ E.J. Korvettes, and picking up "Stag" when it came out, after coming from a free out-door concert by Tommy James! This might me an interesting side thread...your most memorable record-buying experiences! on the "getting into discs" subject: (in my opinion) the best releases of all time take about 4 or 5 listens to settle into. I think you have to hear a disc in its entirety, and then a few more times till you anticipate the next song before you can form an opinion. I have (I don't think) NEVER bought a disc, popped it in and thought it was fucking AMAZING before the end of the second song, and had it last the test of time.
MELVINS releases always take about 3 listens to be appreciated fully. (now get to APPRECIATING! got it bub?)

The re-issue of Gluey was my first Melvins purchase. I even remember it was a sunny day and I had been shopping in Amsterdam. Was at a friend's party around the late '80's. A close friend and I were talking about bands.
One cat came up and asked us what we thought were bands that passed as grunge, and we threw out the usual commercialized bands that passed for grunge at the time. Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, etc......
"You guys gotta listen to this....no two songs sound alike." He then tossed on the GPT/Ozma CD.
I hooked up with it right off......my close friend thought they were ok, but nuthin' special.
But he did like the idea of the Melvins sounding different, refreshing. He got into them a little more over time. I found them quite refreshing considering all the repetitive metal and thrash at the time.
Can't say Melvins were a grunge band.....but hailing from the west side they just got lumped into that category. More of a garage grunge band I would guess.
From GPT/Ozma it was Bullhead, then Eggnog, the Lysol and on and on.......some of the newer stuff is ok, but it's not like the older stuff. I do like when they hooked up with Lustmord, but some folks don't. To each his own I guess.......
You gotta partake to get into Melvins, it's probably why I always liked them.

I bought the GPT reissue on a whim, listened to it, didn't know what to think and shelved it. A month or so later, I was really stoned on some pcific northwest bud that my friend sent me and played an mp3 of Boris, and was like 'Holyt shit, this is the best band in the world!. No turning back after that.
Hey, its my first post.
for me my brother quite possibly saved me from the depths of hell.....ya see back in like 89 or 90 i was into prince and really thats about it, the coolest album i had was a faith no more album. but i was only 11. about that time he inroduced me to 10 songs, then over time bullhead and eggnog, i wasn't impressed, told him his music sucked and led zepplin was better....then i got beat up. the ozma album cover interested me and i listened to it and sort of liked it, it grew on me a bit. when houdini came out i was hooked. he always told me king b was the master of feed back and i always told him to shut up and then i would get beat up again. all these years later i think i owe my bro an apology. i still have all the tapes of all those early melvins albums that i recorded from him cause i didn't ever have money to buy the albums back then. so i guess you could say some of my earliest memories was that of pirate-ing melvins albums back in the late 80's at the age of 12.
i think the 1st song that made me take notice was hearing kingsmill play youth of america on radio. always knew of the melvins but never took the time to check them out. went to cd store and listened to COD.That confused the fuk outta me at the time.but they intrigued so much i just kept goin back until i eventually bought the GPT reissue.now i fiend for melvins like a vicious crack whore!
