anyone wanna share a chalet at nightmare before xmas?
Maybe. Please share some details about yourself, like where you are from and stuff. I really don't wanna miss this thing with BB.
Got a chalet booked. All 2 berth chalets are sold out now.
YEAH, I'M GONNA SEE THE MELVINS!
me too!!!!
but you know that of course..
:D
Hey, it's the only option I and klump had! ;)
Anyway, just wondering if some UK people could give me some advice on how to get there. And by there I mean Taunton, the closest main line station to the festival. I can take a (2 person) flight to London (several airports, any preference?) or Bristol - flying to Bristol is approximately 100 euro more expensive. If I go to London I have to get to a train station first - I believe not all airports have a train station - to can take a train to Taunton. A one person train ticket from Paddington to Taunton costs
This is a bit more of an official site for checking train times and prices - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
One piece of advice, don't automatically go for a return ticket for where you are going, have a good look at the prices of single tickets. When I did the journey to London for the big band show a return ticket was getting on for

Yeah, I used that one too. In neither case is it possible to pre order tickets for December though.

How is it possible that two single tickets are less expensive than a return? Is there any logic in that at all?
That is one of the many joys of English public transport!
I've got a feeling it will probably work out cheaper for you to fly to Bristol. Try looking at getting a flight to either Liverpool or Manchester then get a flight to Britsol? It could end up being a bit of a long way round, but for the Melvins it's worth it!
we're gonna travel by ryanair to stansted (which is by far the cheapest option for us). that way we don't have to travel with the expensive "plane-train" to gardermoen (outside oslo), we we just have to drive like half an hour, check in, go to the gate, fight with 189 other people to get on the plane and find a seat, sit there for about 2 hours, buying tiny beers or bullseye bag drinks, get off the plane, sit 45 minutes on the stansted express to liverpool street, go by tube to paddington, find the taunton train, sit there for about two hours, THEN find our way to the festival and the crazy dutch fella! :D
This site might be a good place to get a flight into Manchester - http://www.jet2.com/
isn't manchester like... WAY north?
bristol is in the south, pretty close to wales, right?
i hope they'll make the program available soon,
so we can find out if we have to travel on thursday, or go back on monday.. :)

We're probably gonna flight Friday morning anyway, but yeah maybe it's safe to wait - just in case the Melvins play Friday midday - which is pretty unlikely though.
Hey maffymaff, thanks for your tips. And you too Lunica ;) I''ll have to sort this thing out this week I think.
And as far as the train ticket prices, aren't there are several train companies in the UK which automatically causes the different prices?
I know Manchester is further north, I was going off which airports you can fly to Bristol from and there are none in London. Manchester is the only big UK airport that you can get to from bristol and I know there are cheap flights to Holland from there ;) And it may work out a good saving to then fly to Bristol from there. The direct flight from Holland to Britstol looks pretty expensive, but doing it via Manchester would mean a bit or waiting around for connecting flights.

It used to be the case with British Rail that it was significantly cheaper to get a return ticket than a single one-way! Those crazy Brits!

I was already assuming you meant that. I'll look for that, thanks for the tip!
So are we meeting up to smoke pot and argue that infact honky IS better than POTRE? also i imagine melvins will be headlining one of the days - probably saturday, although im basing this on that you would assume sonic youth will play sunday night and melvins being the next "biggest" (how amusing melvins being considered the biggest band at a festival) would headline the day before? I dunno what do you guys think? regardless there's 4 pubs in "short walking distance" and a beach, which will be fun for those of you who have never been near a coast in england in december - bring a coat.
Let's just smoke pot and agree on both albums, or ALL albums for that matter. (As for the polls, I don't believe one album is better than another, I just pick the option that suits me best at that moment. Ah well.)
SY and the Stooges are the obvious headliners so far, so yeah, maybe the Melvins are healdining the other night.
And yeah, I'm definitely up for having a beer - at the festival or at the pub.
wow! i just realized POTRE means pigs of the roman empire. until now, i thought it was a crappy band
and yeah, thanks for all the tips! :D
how amusing. glad to help. HAT isn't a band either :P
i know HAT isn't a band, its obvious that it is a hat!
Have some karma for your comedy. I enjoyed it.
Yeah, she better saves some for ATP too :D
I hope I can go to this! I will totally buy everyone a pint. Whether they want one or not. ATP isn't a tennis tour either. Yes. And Honky is better than POTRE :)

I hope you can make it too, man. Do you think you can find enough people to share a chalet with?
Heh, i'm pretty sure that I could do a 4 berth one if they don't sell out soon.
Reading a bit further back, the Melvins might play first on the friday however unlikely it may seem. Shellac and the Boredoms have both started the day up in the past and that was sort of unexpected.
i'll bring both comedy AND stellas! (for myself) :D
i guess the plane tickets will have to wait, i want to study its habits first :)
you lucky bastards! i'd shag you all if i were in the chalet. that is 'all' except the blokes
I'm going too!! See you fuckers there!
you bastard!
and now with negative approach. delicious.
so whats happening with the info?
they're slooow :D
Which info?
And Negative Approach and Dead C are confirmed, woohoo (I guess).
info about when the bands will be playing :D
Maybe they just don't know... Or maybe it's cus they don't need to, UK folks are festival crazy at the moment, Glastonbury regularly sells out 100,000 in hours when the headliners are still rumours.
I could put a turd in a jar and call it a festival, I'd still get 5000 16 year olds turning up in the hope that Foo Fighters might play.

Of course I won't, finally something else than all those neo-psyhchedelic/hippie/folk/droney/weird bands, not that I'm complaining.
Besides, NA is pretty essential, right? Or just legendary?
classic and good!! but it has been 20 years since they broke up, so who knows for sure?

Hell no, saw Seein' Red playing yesterday, a Dutch hc band with all members in their 40s and they were incredibly fast. Burial and the Japanse band Nightmare were also on the bill.

So far we have 3 confirmed people but i'll let you know in a couple of weeks what is actually going on if your friend hasn't sorted anything by then. Hey Andy,
Thanks for the reply. That friend of mine is an American living in Amsterdam. He know some people who love the Stooges, SY and the Melvins of course, but from here it's quite expensive to go. But yeah, I'll hear from you in a couple of weeks, no problem.

The Haters have been added. Witness:
"One of the more infamous performances was in San Francisco in 1993 when a suspended ion-gun charged the entire audience to five thousand volts! Fun was had by all as audience members chased one another giving each other shocks. People were even getting up on tables and chairs, reaching towards the ion-gun, hoping to get more of a charge to give bigger shocks to their friends."
A band that electrically charges the audience. Yes yes yes.
I'm still needing a spare ticket/space or two :D After the fine fellows above me on this thread of course.

I've been looking a huge amount on stuff like the ATP groups on myspace etc. Someone had this one spare on the Sonic Youth forum. I get the feeling lots will turn up soon, so if your friend still wants one it could appear.
Do you think the Melvins will ever 'curate' an ATP? If they did the line up would be to extreme.

Here's mine. To me, the big difference with festivals I usually go to - except for Dour and Roadburn - and this one, is that at ATP you can just hang in the Centre Stage all weekend and still see great bands. This line up makes all these smaller, still interesting, bands simply impossible to check out, with a few exceptions of course.
i wanted to see deerhoof, but i've seen them before.

Ha, I got close at the Lowlands festival last summer but made my national tv appearance anyway since I fought myself a way to the front! They let 6 or 7 people and that was it, so your chances depend on the security and the people who will help you getting up. Fortunately there will be two Norwegian Vikings at ATP as well so maybe they can help you out beating your competition!
My stamina is great, so is my strength.
Thats what being a viking is all about.
Well, that and beer.
Besides, I'm a girl. I can just kick people in the nuts so you can run up to the front!
:D
Start warming up your nuts kicking leg :)
I mean i'm not going to watch Major Stars, Maarten. Flipper and Melvins twice. Yes.

Sunburned is boring, really boring. I saw Avarus a week before them and was totally into them, but Sunburned were really, really bad in my opinion. I left when I had been waiting for something to happen for more than thirty minutes.

As much as I do believe you, some people have told me otherwise. To be honest if you want to end the entire thing with a party the MC5 is the one to go to. So i'll probably end up there.
I haven't even read the 2001: A Space Odyssey Book :( Arthur C. Clarke though innit?
By the way, Major Stars are awesome. I'm disappointed i'll be missing them. 3 guitar psych attack!
yeah, thats the name. i haven't read it either..

Shit man, you should never have sent me that track, it sounds amazing so far, and I'm just half way. If there would have been 15 minutes between the end of t... aarafgfth, no. I wanna see Flipper too. Or should I just watch Flipper in London only? New stuff, like the Major Stars, can sometimes turn out way better then the stuff you alread know, like Flipper...dillema's....
I'm sorry man! I never should have downloaded it in the first place. What you don't know doesn't hurt you. That isn't even the best song either. I might just wait for them to come back around next year or something. They are right between Flipper and Melvins, it just isn't meant to be :( Even if you didn't watch Flipper you could only watch Major Stars for about 20 minutes.
Another option would be Hive Mind after Nurse With Wound, then the first 30 minutes of Major Stars and then Melvins. That would be less crowdy too, I'm sure. I don't know, I am not sure what Hive Mind exactly sounds like, although I'm pretty sure most acts on ATP are worth the check out least.
OK, back to K1 fighting on tv!
(Wow, that new Firefox is amazing! I had my reply typed out when Firefox crashed. The new Firefox however saves all user data in sessions, and when it crashes, it can restore these sessions, with no lost data at all.)
Major Stars moved to Sunday at 3.00. Nobody else is playing at that time. Yes!
The times have changed a little bit, better update your spreadsheet Maarten :)
You never guess what link I wanted to post here: http://www.atpfestival.com/events/nightmare/news.php?view=521 :D
But yeah, amazing news!

in 15 hours, we'll be on our way :D
To all you guys that are going, have plenty of fun!!!
I'll hopefully be catching DKT/MC5 on Saturday night in Sheffield. And a certain band called the Melvins on Wednesday in Manchester!
I think i'm just going to stay in the house. It's too rainy out there.
I have to be honest i was gutted not being able to get a ticket for this show, that was till i remembered the outbreak of the Norwalk virus a year or so ago at Butlins Minehead.

hehe, so would i.
2 shows. i think the setlist went something like this
talking horse
bloated pope
civilized worm
oven
set me straight/dch
sky pup
let it all be
blood witch
a history of drunks
rat faced
the hawk
youve never been right
a history of bad men
the bit - saturday show only
lovely butterflies
if ive got anything not quite right i apologise. met buzz saturday night outside finnigans, i told him from buying melvinmania "we had nothing to do with that" - buzz i'd now purchased about 28 cds, so some good came out of it. we shook hands and bid our farewell "see you in manchester" "looking forward to it" he replied. a genuinely nice man.
I think that's exactly right, also worth mentioning Big Business played the Saturday show too.
maarten! klump! lunica! where are you?
I saw Maarten off to the airport earlier, he gets in at 6.30 Dutch time. Which is right about now I think. Hey Glen, I saw quite a lot off the Snivlem shirts, they look great and I want one!
My god, they were ON FIRE on Friday and Saturday, bolstered by Tim MossSanta and an amazing Big Business performance on Saturday. Absolutely fucking brilliant. Almost every person I talked to said they were the best band they'd seen. Anyway, here are some poor quality photos I took:

Can't argue with that lineup!

Ok, I know already this is gonna be a long post. Probably the longest I've ever written.
This has been one of the best weekends in my life! Great music, great wine, great "open minded" movies, great company.
So mind all the grammar errors and fucked up sentences, I feel pretty weird right now. I haven't slept a lot this weekend and got home like half an hour ago. So if it doesn't make any sense, just ask. My head is all messed up, but I might answer :)
After arriving at Stansted, riding the train to London, changing to the tube, waiting an hour to get on the next train, we were pretty happy when we finally arrived in Taunton. We didn't know we would have to wait two more hours in the cold (yes, it was just as cold as Norway). We ended up sharing a cab with some people we didn't know.
After an hour in the cab, we got to Minehead and Butlin's. We found the Dutch boys, and after a few bottles of wine, we went to see the Melvins show. I was so tired at the show, I didn't get to enjoy it as much as I should have, but it was still great. It started up with Big business, with Dale on guitar. They did this great song where Jared sang the same words over and over again, more silent every time he sang it, then it ended up in total silence. The audience didn't even let a fart roam. Well, they did actually. We could smell it.
When I think about it, I don't think big business played the first night. But they did play on Saturday.
Me and klump went to see The Stooges, which was great. Iggy is a real showman. he had like 20 people rocking out on stage, and they played at least some of the fun house stuff. Although I wish they would have played "Dirt" and "TV Eye"
.
The next morning, someone slipped a note under our door, announcing that the Melvins would be doing an extra gig around 2pm the same day, because someone didn't get to see them on friday cause it was too crowded or something. So we drank some more bottles of wine, and went to see the show.
Damn! I just managed to quit my browser, so I have to type it all up again.
The second show was great. Buzz was in a great mood, and Jared was rocking out like a Soul daddy in his mumu on the other side of the stage. Bug Business was great! They did this song where it all turned more and more silent, until it was complete silence.. it was great. Tim Moss came out dressed up as Santa, and just stood there waving. The roadies were dressed up as monkeys.. they acted like monkeys as well, and a planet of the apes-like music came on when they were done playing. I don't remember which songs they played, but there was a lot of new stuff, and some older stuff. I'm sure klump and Maarten can help you out here. By the way, the sets were all different, and the two drummers thing worked out GREAT!
After a hell of a weekend, and waiting an hour for a bus/cab in the rain, we got back to London again.
We met up with the others and went to see the show. I think Men of porn started!? They must have been in Camden, cause they were blowing in this little flute making duck sounds (they have them all over the place in Camden), and a kazoo. Good show. Then it was FLIPPER's turn. I haven't heard a lot of FLIPPER, but when i heard the first song, I thought "This sounds like it could have been good 20 years ago, but its pretty mediocre now". This changed after the first song though, they still sound great. They had Chris Novoselic on bass, which was a sure hit among all the Nirvana fans. During the FLIPPER show, Buzz, Dale and Coady entered the stage and started to play with them (Sacrifice). They all seemed to enjoy themselves. Then came Big Business - still great. They didn't manage to pull of the silence stuff as good as they did on Saturday, but they started improvising it, and it got really funny.
The Melvins show is simply the best convert I've ever been to. I don't know what to say about it. It went on for ages, but it just got better and better! I'm still stoked about this whole week. Its like I'm high - but I'm not.
I'll let this picture sum it all up for now!
(I'll post some pictures of the show tomorrow)
