Title: IMPORTANT: Not sure if the Melvins are first to do this...
Post by: the bloat on November 06, 2006, 10:38:37 PM
As I was listening to the new 7" for like, the 9th time tonight, I carefully laid the needle down as I always do and found that the song Boss Hoss was playing in reverse! At first, I was like wtf? I must've accidently flipped the switch to 33RPM. But no. After trying again, the regular song was back again.

What the Melvins have done on their newest limited release is included one groove to be the forward (regular) version and another groove to be the backwards version. Fuck yeah!! Where do they come up with this shit? My question is, has any other band done this before? I have a lot of records, but none of them have two tracks on two different grooves (or maybe I have never noticed before). The possibilities are endless for this. Seriously. You could put all kinds of hidden shit in on your record if this was more common.

Mr. Bungle did it with Disco Volante. The track Carry Stress in the Jaw, it has the first part of the track in one groove and the end part in another groove. I'm glad you mentioned something about the new 7", the first time I heard it, it was backwards and I thought I was going crazy.

No, Melvins are far from the first band doing so.

It's called parrallel grooves. Check out: http://www.kempa.com/blog/archives/000044.html

There's also inverted grooves (going inside/out): http://www.kempa.com/blog/archives/000050.html, and lock groove: http://www.kempa.com/blog/archives/000046.html.

One of the earliest examples of parralel grooves was the Monty Python Tie & Handkerchief LP, otherwise known as the three sided LP.

The Faxed head Spanish Rice 7" was a double groove.

The same track but the end part has a spooky voice that would come on if you accidentally dropped the needle into the secret double groove...

"if you do not destroy this record and purchase another..you will perish..........it is written"

anyway if you'd played the record a bunch without getting the double groove, one day you'd go to listen to it and the voice would come on and freak the pants off ya!!!

BRILLIANT!
