Title: Melvins - Los Angeles, CA 02/17/07
Post by: John Schuller on February 18, 2007, 12:39:59 AM
After the melvins at the mandrake art show the melvins played an invite only show hakf a block away.

Pretty much was the best Melvins show I have ever seen. 50 or so people in attendance. Opening with Second Coming/Ballad of Dwight Fry...and continuing on into all kinds of music from the latest album and new song.

Small kits, small amps.

Amazing. Best lineup of the Melvins ever.

And a cop snuck me in. Imagine that. A Los Angeles Police Officer sneaking me into an invite only rock show?

Anyway, best Melvins show I have ever seen. (And I've been going to Melvins shows since 1986 when I was in 9th Grade).

simple.

In the good ol' days you would sit there at the record player with the cover of Gluey Porch Treatments in your hands. You would gaze at that fucker the whole time...knowing the record starts with Eye Flys...knowing side one ends with Leech...

Nowadays..you pop that CD in the car stereo and rock while driving around! I too busy airdrumming and trying not to hit anyone to look at song titles.

The new song sounds not a lot like anything from Senile Animal. Lots of information in the song. That is for sure!!!

It was a rocker in the rock sense. Not hardcore. Not punk. Not metal. Uptempo. Complex riffing. Buzz vocals.

Is there any chance that this song was a cover of Boss Hoss?

to be brutally honest,  I don't like it.

they are supposed to be MELVINS album covers, right?

I don't see this as a MELVINS album cover.

Believe it or not, there weren't too many artists that stuck literally with that theme.  It was more of an art show where the pieces might have something to do with the melvins.

Perhaps these are inspired by the melvins?

It's like Buzz says, man. Why get someone in to work with you and then tell him/her what to do? Let them, do what they've always done, whatever it is that made you want to work with them in the first place.

There's a theme to it; otherwise it's just another art show.   You give artists one rule; you'll find it much more interesting than saying 'do the fuck whatever'.

I thought being an artist was all about avoiding restrictions? Overcoming boundaries? bending the envelope?

I see your point, ass man. I guess my point is that I can't see any kind of criteria that would make a certain photo/painting/whatever a melvins cover or not. Seems like that willis painting could have easily been used for never breathe. But this is all tied to how I see the melvins. To me the melvins are about doing whatever the fuck you what regardless of everything. Seems liek that's what those artists did, no?

Whatever, the fuck do I know? I wasn't even there!

with art, rules can be a medium just like anthing else.

You have art movements built around "rules".  Within those rules you're free to do whatever.  Even an art movement "with no rules" would have "no rules" as a rule.

It's not a rule if it denies what it is, it's nothing. Principle of identidy, maaaaaaaaaan. A can't be A and non-A at the same time.

Shrodingers cat?   Wave or particle?  No rules can be the rule.  Think broadly.  An identity can have two disconnected properties.

Disconnected properties maybe but not contradictory properties.

nevermind. I see what you're saying.
