Title: Melvins POD Tour, Showbox Seattle 18 Sept.
Post by: GrimReaper on September 14, 2007, 12:50:21 PM
So far I know Smellis, Bad Ronald, will be there with me.  Anyone else going?

Pre-Melvins shots?

Who must work/drive home after the show?

Haven't got my ticket yet, but I'll be there.

I'll be taking a cab home so I'd be up for drinks.

I'll be there.  Might try to find a room at the Tortoise after the show.  Amtrak back to Portland the next morning for that show.  Then work the next day.

I'm there. I'm screwed in the drinking departmant though, I have to work Wednesday morning!!! Oh well, I will by right up front on the stage directly in front of Buzz. Look for me there if I don't see you first. Last time I saw Grim at a show at Neumo's he was hanging on the stage watching Buzz and Dale like he was taking a mini college course. Don't think he even blinked once.  :D

Heading out now. Just listened to Suicide in Progress from Roadburn Festival!

Well that sure made this weather seem less gloomy!  :D

Setlist was almost the same as Sacramento's but I swear I heard another song from Bullhead played before Dwight Fry, maybe they mixed the list up or played another but it was definately there.   Big Business did a short 6-7 set which had Toshi & Dale up on guitar for Easter Romantic and a possible new song.

POD was both fun and slightly confusing, not as long as I thought it'd be though, maybe 30 minutes?

Also saw Grip, Hanz and a few others before-after-during the show, and got the Mel-Vins poster where one of the band members drew a swastika on it.   Hehehe.

yes the show was pretty good...... the cover of the beatles' i wanna hold your hand (the beginning of it, anyway) was a surprise....  and the older songs, like your blessened, with teeth, hog leg, done with 2 drummers was really good.

i was supposed to meet up with idlehanz to swap some dvds but we kept missing each other....  next time, i guess

they need to keep doing older songs with this 2 drummer set up.....

Excellent show.  Same setlist as Sac.  I met up with Grim before the show, and we went and got Bad Ronald and his female counterpart.  Drank many beers and made our way down the the Showbox.  They went off for another beer, and I went inside to check the merch.  They had about 15 cd's, all the new 7 inchers, the POD dvd and 7 incher, the Trilogy vinyl!!, POTRE vinyl, some framed stuff I didn't get a good look at, the 2 different Octo shirts, the Pussy shirt, and the Eggnog shirt.  And the posters of course.  Oh, and a limited edition ASA cardboard cd with different cover art.  I finally got myself a copy of the trilogy, the poster, and a few other things.  I'll get more shit tonight :)  I also met Dudbean, Smellis, Aaron Ni, and some friends from back on the harbor.   Also met Mike Zeigler, very nice guy.

The show was great.  Kurt  let me stand in the soundboard area next to him to film, so I had a pretty good view.  I found and talked with Dan Raymond before the show, and also talked a bit with Toshi between BB's and Melvins set.  Watched a buddy of mine get on stage about three songs till the end, and get rushed off, then suddenly he was thrown out.  Not sure what he did, but they didn't take kindly to it.

There's more, but I'm kinda pooped.  Anyone going to tonights PDX show bring your wallet.  There's some good shit for sale.

Hahaha, Hanz, I was stage right and saw what happened to your friend.  Instead of walking down off stage he tried to climb up on the equipment boxes and jump back into the crowd, which as we all know security hates it when people climb on the venues shit.  Oh well!  :P

The show was simply outstanding. Nice blend of the old and new. Really liked the stuff from Bullhead, it's been a long time for that. The band was as tight as ever of course. Toshi really rocked the guitar with Big Biz and was making noise with all kinds of electronic gizmos. Grim was rocking hard in front of Buzz, you can always tell who the dedicated fans are in the crowd. Talked to Idle, Bad Ronald and Grim. Buzz, Dale, Jared, Cody and everyone of their crew was as generous and friendly as ever. Hardest working band out there. I did not see that Moss had to kick anyone's ass this time but he looked ready. Great guy unless you fuck with the MELVINS.  All you lucky bastards have fun tonight in Portland!!  :x

Pretty sure, I believe the first guy was ousted but the last 2-3 surfers were just escorted back to the crowd.  At least it was near the end of the show, it'd be shitty to get ousted three songs into a Melvins show!

If that was you then yeah, I suppose we did meet!   :D

I'm no Dutch Lunica fan, mind you. Hey Idle, I remember (that already sounds so bad) saying I'd buy you a beer, but I didn't see you after that. Did you give me a can of PBR earlier, or was that someone else? After you and Grim told me about those the night got a bit foggy.
[/quote]

That was me that got ya the PBR.  I bought all of ya one.  All of us that were standing there anyway.  Grim, Bad Ron, his lady friend, you and the other fellow who I don't remember.  He didn't want it, so I had 2 talls for a while.  Then someone dumped it :(

NOT I! I guess it was another guy, probably standing right next to us. I was the guy standing immediately in front of Coady when he came off the stage and hugged some guy who I presume he knew, if that helps.

Actually by that time I was near the soundbooth ready to leave since I had to drive home to Olympia and get up for work at 7AM.  If you get a copy of the recording Hanz did you'll see me throwing the goat with a big grin at the end of the concert since I was standing in front of him while Dwight Fry was playing.

Now that I think about it, you probably couldnt hear me but I was the guy who shouted "Yes!" when they started the drum into to It's Shoved, the whole show was great but the first half of the set was fucking brilliant since this was my fourth Melvins show.  My first time hearing alot of those songs!  :D

P.S. Silly Butthole, come out of the closet already!

After about 20 minutes into the MELVINS set I retreated from in front of Buzz (covered in beer) to over on the stairs where the band runs back stage. Do you see my sorry ass over there bopping my head Idle? I'm such a choad, I'll have to mail you some Tadcaster stout or some Belgian Whit, Duvel or something.

Sorry I missed everyone.  I didn't get to the show until about 5 minutes before BB started playing.  If anyone remembers a short guy with a grey hooded sweatshirt carrying a couple of posters around and drinking peebers, that was me.

And as always, the Melvins KILLED!  One of my favorite Melvins shows of the past 5 years.  I hope they're back for the holidays.

I'm new to the board here (I've lurked once or twice over the last year or so), but have been a longtime Melvins devotee.  I was also up front right in front of Buzzo and witnessed the surfers getting thrown out.  I loved hearing the Lysol and Egg Nog stuff, but does it seem to anyone else like there's been a severe lack of any Kevin-era material since he was booted from the band?  There's some incredible stuff on the trilogy, and HAT is probably my favorite single Melvins record.  What happened to that music?

I too am lamenting the loss of slide bass and distorted effects-laden noise.
Jared doesnt play slide bass, and his 'noise' is different to the noise Rutmanis made,
It's heavier and more bottom than 'whatever that other guy may have played'
maybe thats why they haven't attempted any of that material yet.

they don't pull out much of the Mark D era stuff either, except a couple classic songs

Jeez Glen, "Lord and Master" is a bit over the top!   =;  There was no personal jam session, he was just warming up a little before the show and I was lucky enough to talk with him a bit     ("a bit" he-he).

sorry.  but I'd brag.

It's OK buddy. I just have never been partial to bragging. Anyway, yeah it's always an hpnor to talk with Buzz but I'm certainly not the only person who does at shows. OK yeah it was especially extra cool watching him warm up a bit. Garreith strung his guitar and then he jammed around on it to check the action. You crack me up Glen, I think if I ever drank with you I would shit myself laughing you old codger....

I find that beating people with blunt objects is the best medicin.
But Im often laughing while doing it, so maybe laughter IS the best medicine.

Yeah, all the slide bass on Dr. Geek might be a bit out of Jared's league.  That song would be so intense though with two drummers.  This show was definitely one of the best I can remember in a while.  I doubt if I'll ever see another show that could top the Hell's Kitchen show in Tacoma on the HAT tour though.  The combination of that being such a tiny venue and the material that was played (they played almost the entire album, including The Anti-Vermin Seed) was fantastic.  Did anyone notice the other night that they threw in the drum outro from Black Stooges at the end of Civilized Worm?  I guess if that's all the HAT fix I get, I'll take it.  Hopefully in time Jared can pick up some slide bass tactics, and in time they'll recover from the heartbreak.  Still, a Melvins show with no Kevin or Mark D. era material is still better than any non-Melvins show...  Has anyone heard what Kevin Rutmanis is up to now that he's not in the Melvins or Tomahawk?

If that was you then yeah, I suppose we did meet!   :D

That was ME!!

Fuck.  I'm watching the dvd....and I realized I did a "Whoooooo!" after It's Shoved.  How embarrasing :)

Where can I get my hands on said DVD? I got about 45 minutes of video from my sony cyber shot. I was right in the pit and got angles from both sides of the stage and from the bar on stage left in the back. The footage is very raw, I left it recording even when I was walking around. I'll put some of it on youtube, but it sucks I have to cut it up into 10 minute increments.. Alright guys & gals.. TA for now...

Yep, its a nice camera. It survived being in the melvins mosh pit without a scratch. It helps to have a big memory card. I could have gotten around 2 1/2 hours of video with a 2gb and a 1gb mem card.

Buzzo looks pissed at me!

All the talk of Kevin and the HAT tour made me watch a few shows from that tour to compare with the POD tour.

Onr thing for sure Dale has gotten big. He still came on stage in his black skivies and was fit during the HAT tour.

Buzz's hair was just starting to turn gray.

With Kevin there seemed to be more improvization. With Big Biz the sets are well rehersed.

Buzz totally rocked out to Dr. Geek, but it wouldn't be the same without Kevin's bass.

But I also realized that the addition of Big Business brought new life to the band and I think this is positve. We still have the memories.

Hard to believe that was in 2002, 5 years ago.

It's gonna be a while.  By dvd, I meant I was watching it straight off the camera.  My dvd burner took a shit on me, and it's gonna be a few weeks before I can get a new one.  I'll post it on the dvd master list when they are done.

Big Biz era is acceptable, but the Mark D and Kevin eras are true highwater points. It'll take alot for them
to ever get back to that level. And I love these guys, but we all know it's true. HAT, and Stag have yet to be
surpassed by anything that the four-piece has done to date. Think about it: Pigs, Honky, Stag, Trilogy,
Stoner Witch. All of them are miles beyond ASA and Nude.

The funny thing is , I'm not ashamed at all. They pulled it off
in spades! When I bought ASA and took it home I was in tears the
first time I listened because it was so perfect. That, and I was on E.

but seriously, thanks for keeping me honest. Let me rate them:

HAT - 5/5  (Can listen to this any time, any place and love it)
Trilogy - 5/5  (Same as above, always play them back to back as well)
Stag - 5/5  (Mark D merits a big mention, loved his work)
Stoner - 4/5  (Back when I still smoked up, this was a must-listen)
Pigs - 4/5  (Melvins out-dooming and out-rocking anything else in their path)
Honky - 3/5  (Back when I still did shrooms, this was a must-listen)
ASA - 3/5  (4/5 when on ecstasy)
NWB - 2/5  (3/5 when I'm grooving on vodka shots to Dog Island)
