Why exactly was Kevin kicked out of The Melvins? I remember in late 2004 they cancelled a ton of tour dates for some odd reason involving Kevin. He got back together with them for one show in 2005. Later that year news broke that he was no longer in the band. All I remember was reading somewhere that Buzz said "there's only so much I could take" or something like that.
Anybody know what went wrong?
hey leroy. you should spend some time browsing over this message board.
this has been hashed, hashed again and re-hashed here.
just do a search of "kevin rutmanis" in the MELVINS discussion. you'll find the opinions you're looking for. and thats all you'll find is opinions. if you want facts I suggest looking up the parties involved.
we will probably never really know. but this is from the wikipedia which
buzz has been known to edit and update and it hasn't been removed as
vandalism so you never know:
''In June of 2005, Rutmanis officially left the band with drug abuse rumored as the major cause.''
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvins
We may never know until the Melvins biography is released but Monkey's Uncle provides some insight.
Don't ask us to explain please.
i recently heard from an unreliable source that he od'd on heroin and got sent away to an insane asylum for electroshock therapy. the irony is now clear..Kevin is an electroretard. the irony.. the metaphores the similies the ottomotopoieas ohhh the limmericks.
out of fantasy,he was kicked out cause was not able or didn't want to work seriously with the band.in my opinion the story is so clear that there is nothing to explain.i was very disappointed at the time, but seeing what kevin has done after the Melvins (nothing),think Buzz and Dale were forced to take the decison.about speculations, who know if was amphetamine or heroine?is not so important and Melvins aren't Guns n Roses :)
how do you pronounce kevin's last name?
rut man ass
Rutmanis.
i asked him what happened and this is what he said:
"Melvins fired me for a variety of personal/professional reasons, all of which started with my drinking problem....I've been sober now 2 1/2 years...but there was more, and frankly it's just as well. Tomahawk never officially fired me, I just heard through the grape vine they werent using me! ouch! thats show biz."

I saw K in a bar and he downed two shots in a row.
His bass playing was really great in Orphan's Tragedy. He should have been allowed to co-write more of the stuff in The Melvins
He should join the Heroine Sheiks.
yeah i thought he was kickass for the melvins and tomahawk. he is missed
Buzz > Kevin, wholly, as a sexy beast, a gentlemen, and a musician.
I'm a relatively new Melvins fan (3 yrs really strong, though I saw them open for Tool in '97) and from listening to their progress, Kevin couldn't keep up with the Buzz/Dale songwriting.
unless you're kevin's brain you don't know anything dipshits
In all fairness, a bass player getting kicked out of the Melvins isn't exactly a new occurrence. It could be he just got canned.
Anyways, yeah, Kevin has rocked in the Cows, he rocked in Tomahawk, and he rocked in the Melvins.
Shitbeard is a great song. A GREAT SONG
Kevin was pulling hella-more birds than Buzz or Dale. That's why.
I hope he joins the Christina Aguilera on her next album, imagine the live show him dancing and her, all the gyrating would be something to behold.

This is some info I received from an inside source. Kevin was let go, mainly due to an alcohol issue that I hope has been resolved. I am sure this is the exact same reason he is no longer in Tomahawk. I am just glad to see he is doing some killer music and staying active.
There's also been some discussion that he was let go
from Tomahawk before the Melvins fired him
Kevin read on the internet that he was no longer in Tomahawk. This was after Melvins fired him, I think.

I remember Mike Patton being asked about this and he said that when the album came out he was busy with Peeping Tom, Daune was busy with USSA, and John was busy with Battles. He also mentioned a possiblity of touring in the future. It seems like it was rumored that Mike Watt was going to tour with them.
whoever posted hepatitus' myspace page, thanks. it never occurred to me to look there to find stuff by them. just goes to show how far behind the times i am.
how is this band not signed? from what i've been listening to so far, it's pretty friggin' great.
i can see Hepatitis as a project, not as a main project though.guess Kevin and the other members involved work on that stuff not fulltime.besides rumors about don't know what, guess right now he isn't really interested about to be in a band and work hard in a band.
Kevin is the only Melvin's bassist where I could actually see him playing again in some reunion shows in the future.
Before you say anything...Mike Dillard did it!
Mike Dillard was also the only member to quit, not get fired.
Although I like all of their bassists, I found Kevin to be the most creative one overall. I always dug the way he'd step waaay outside of the box of the "bass player role". And for the record, his bass work was a big part of the appeal for the Tomahawk stuff IMHO...I didn't even really like (or purchase) Anonymous for that matter.

there's a mark d interview during the release of one of his albums where he seems very apologetic to buzz and dale, offering out olive branches.
Rutmanis would weird me the fuck out with his facial expressions and the way he contorted around onstage. REALLY liked his bass playing both on H.A.T. and for live performances though. Had never seen someone rock slide bass before him (i.e. see how pretty, see how smart). Had never thought much about why he isn't in the Melvins anymore; probably because they seem to generally go the route of the disposable bassist.
I have to admit at times I've been a little on the fence concerning my feeling towards good ole Mr. Rutmanis. He almost always looks like he could use a shower and shave! but more Importantly why would he leave Tomahawk??? Anyhow these petty things are really of no consequence and if anything my failed attempt at humor. In all seriousness tho, I just listened to The Fool 45 on my system with the awesome speakers and had a realization: "Holy fuck his bass line during the quiet part where Buzz's vocals come in is off the hook". I've always loved this song but must have overlooked how great the bass line is. Kevin Rutmanis and H.A.T. are both the shit!!!

The world needs musicians like Shannon Selberg, Rutmanis etc.. to be making music.
First of all, I am pretty darn sure that is Coady in the photo. Hard to tell, but I think it's him.
Second, Tomawho? Tomawhat? Let's get down to brass tax and talk about what's important here:
Well, from the recent photos I have seen, Kevin is looking a lot healthier these days. If any one bass player could or would be taken back for another EP or whatever, surely it would be him. Right? Right guys? [-o< He does look like he's cleaned up.... that's...the most important part.
No jinxin, but Dale did mention a lot of upcoming projects with special guests (beyond the three line-ups and splits that we already know about  ) in that Metal Sucks interview from earlier this year. I'm looking forward to ungodly amounts of new material as well as a lot of surprises. He went AWOL from the Melvins in like 2005, the story goes the band couldn't contact him (he'd got back on the gear) so had to get Trevor Dunn in to record that Houdini live album with them. Buzz supposedly kicked him out of the band immediately and Tomahawk basically did the same. Buzz & Patton are really close so I assume Patton just followed Buzz's lead on that.
