Title: Obscure Melvins factoids.
Post by: Mad Arab on May 04, 2008, 09:04:35 AM
Do you know any? I know that the Melvins, Buzz in particular, is very careful in not giving out personal info about himself or the band, but little things do tend to come out and make sense, or at least seem to fit.

Browsing through the 60 pages worth of threads in the Melvins Discussion I came across what I consider an obscure factoid:

The song Eye Flys is a homage to a book called Catch 22. In the book there is a character named Appleby who is disliked by another character named Orr who rather crytically states that Appleby has "flies in his eyes".

A quote from Catch-22:

Quote"Oh, they're there, all right," Orr had assured him about the flies in Appleby's eyes after Yossarian's fist fight with Appleby in the officers' club, "although he probably doesn

The title of "Influences of Atmosphere" may be taken from the Vincent Price movie "Pit and the Pendulum" - there's a specific line about being susceptible to the influences of atmosphere.  Doesn't seem like a coincidence...

the pit and the pendulum is a short story by edgar allan poe. did vincent price make it into a movie or is it just a coincidence?

There is a movie version of this starring Vincent Price.

I just read the movie is loosely based on the novel of Edgar Allan Poe.

I also came across that Catch 22 - Eye Flys connection some time ago while browsing some old threads. In my experience, that is the best way to discover obscure Melvins fans even people like me and you didn't know yet. I'll post some when they come to mind.

"brain center at whipples" is a twilight zone episode.

Buzz likes books, and Simpsons, and has a pretty wife.  Dale likes Simpsons, and has a pretty wife.   Coady is very polite.  Jared is very tall.

No.  Because I don't know it to be a factoid.  I just think I might maybe remember him possibly saying that at some undetermined place in time.

Dudbean told us something about a connection between ZZ Top's - Master of Sparks (from their album Tres Hombres) and Melvins' cover of The Green Manalishi.

Quote from: Dudbean on May 24, 2008, 06:30:17 PM
Weird fact: From 0:18 - 0:32 Master of Sparks sounds exactly like the Melvins version of The Green Manalishi.

here's something ive enevr seen on here but then again i dont come to the Melvins thread much.

but while the credits are rolling up at the end of Demon Night(movie) it says Instant Larry , written by Roger Osbourne or somehting of that nature. menaing Not sure it was word /music, or what. My point is that it credited Roger Osbourne which ive never know any one to state his birth name.

is this old news?

I once looked through the Tony Hawk Underground 2 booklet, and there it said Roger Osborne as well.

Isn't it well known that Buzz's real name is Roger?

Why was Buzz's name in THUG 2?  Is there a Melvins song in the soundtrack?

I don't own the game.

i guess there has to something related.  I answered my own question.

I just watched a 1989 movie called Survival Quest. There's one scene where Lance Henrikson is sitting in an office, and behind him the painting on the cover of Lysol is clearly visible. Kind of a weird double-take moment.

i know that Toadi Acceleratio is an homage to "mr toads wild ride" in disneyland. while youre waiting in line, there is a plaque with a description of the ride and at the bottom it says Toadi Acceleratio. i saw buzz and david scott stone at disneyland a couple of years back and had a quick chance to shoot the shit with them before they headed to splash mountain. apparently they use disneyland as an official business meeting place. tax write offs for season passes and what not.

it was quite entertaining to hear people freaking out about buzz's hair. children pointing and gawking.

Babysitting doesn't mean they aren't related. Kid brother/kid half brother perhaps?

More proof: Open up the Melvins "Trick AND Riddle book" from the HAT tour CD. I'm gonna guess the guy with the body cast on the couch is Buzzo and Jared's dad.

there's a scene in the tv show version of The Maxx (i don't know if it is in the comic book too) where one of the characters is sitting on a ledge waiting for her spirit animal, a wild horse, to give her some kind of sign or speak.  in her narration she specifically refers to a "talking horse".  i don't know if that's where they got it from or if it's a coincidence.

also on mother's day, i noticed a baseball game where the players had pink bats.  just speculating.

Funny, I always thought Dale and Buzz favor quite a bit.

Met a lady at the Hostile Ambient Takeover show in Memphis who claimed to be Buzz's mommy.  Nice lady.

Lawrence of Arabia: a man who found his own light in the face of darkness.  I've read that this is a fave film of Mr. Osborne.

Is this thread a screening for the mtv show "fanatic?"

Nope...his first wife was French-Canadian. Mark's house in Highgate was worth a lot of money.
His new wife might have come from dough, but I wouldn't know.
