Does anyone know if the film was made for the movie or of the music was made for the film or what?

I love this song! I love this whole album!
-
Everything I've read indicates the soundtrack was done "backwards" meaning the wrote and recorded a soundtrack album from start to finish and then built the movie to match it.
-
Cardboa Negro is such a weird song

i didn't realize that. pretty cool way to make a film. build it around an album.

Currently listening to the LOVE disk and actually, despite what i have said previously, really quite enjoying it. It's good background music when and where you don't focus too much upon it. Except 'Scooba', hate that one!

Scooba is the single best moment on that disc. don't be a square.

You think!!?? I must clarify that it's not BAD music. It's just not what i think of as "Melvins". Now, many might say that's what makes it cool, but it's not for me, personally. It doesn't really sit well within the rest of the more ambient tracks either which is a big aspect of it for me.

sounds like you guys have similar opinions

My son loves Scooba, Ian! Have had some listens through especially the Death disc and first I was not certain what to think about it, but then it gradually grew and especially Flaming Creature is one of the best single tracks I`ve heard from the band, in a long time.
-

Yeah that's the one i like possibly the most too. That, Black Heath and Soberdelic are the best.

What about the harmonies with Steve, especially on "What's Wrong With You"? Certainly a new sound for the Melvins and they (Melvins and harmonies) sound great.

I can't get "What's Wrong With You" out of my head.

I can't get 'What's Wrong With You' off the tracklisting. Try as i might!

You’ve got to admit it’s a pretty damn catchy song. Nowhere near as good Flaming Creature or Euthanasia though.

Yeah certainly. Im just not into that, or rather, not into that with my Melvins. Ha! "my" Melvins.

you should check Steven's solo album if you love that song!

Thanks for the recommendation! I definitely will.

Buddy Holiday made a good discovery of various Love moments also appearing in 'Hurray For Me Fuk You Paraquat Plus'. Quite notably the Scooba sample at the beginning and end of course!

Black Heath. There's a lot going on in that song. I'd love to see the parts charted out just to know how weird it really is. Dale is still very much a wizard.
-
I had a listen to the album again a couple of days ago and, you know, i've come to the conclusion this record, taken as a whole, just isn't very good. It has some really cool songs like Black Heath, Soberdelic, Euthanasia and Flaming Creature but those are off set by lots of poor material. The soundtrack side combined makes it's pretty weak really. You could easily lob off 50 minutes and make a much tighter, more impressive record. This makes it a lot better in my opinion. Something more akin to what i would love to see the band do again - produce a great, solid album from front to back.
1. Black Heath
2. Soberdelic
3. Euthanasia
4. Street Level St. Paul
5. Edgar The Elephant
6. The Hidden Joice
7. Flaming Creature
8. Christ Hammer
9. Cactus Party
10. Cardboa Negro
11. Pacomia Normal

I just listened to your remixed version of the album and thought it flowed pretty well. Good to get What's Wrong With You out of there (probably could've done with Christ Hammer being punted too) and the three songs you picked from disc 1 fit in well especially Pacomia Normal as the closer, that would've been a perfect Melvins album closer really.
Good job mate!
-
(probably could've done with Christ Hammer being punted too)
I agree with you. That one is just about acceptable to pass inspection.

I have a new theory about this record. Would love anybody's input.
Notice it's titled a WALK with love and death. We know Buzz's cold heart seems to be warmed mostly by a few things, and in particular his dog(s).
So how did a twenty year old b-side get revived for this album? My guess is the title, "Euthenasia."
I'm imagining the DEATH album as a eulogy for a family dog, or maybe just the first three songs?
Then the LOVE album with its bus stop sounds and playground kids and helicopters and rambling park bench conversations and meth head diatribes, all sound like what a dog might experience on a typical walk through a busy Los Angeles neighborhood. "Scooba" is that one moment of the day when the dog gets excited and chases after a toy or something or digs in the bushes. Lots of times, though, it's just psychedelic swirls and the menace of strange animals' scents in your territory. Dogs live through their nose first, and if we translate that environmental olfactory experience to audio, it might sound a lot like the soundscapes on this album.
Give it a listen and see if anything pops out at you.

This made me think back to an interview where Buzz talked about having to put one of his dogs to sleep a few years back and how it was "one of the hardest things he's ever done".

It's only a minor niggle with me, but now i kind of feel that this album should have had both of it's 2 parts as completely separate entities. Have the soundtrack be titled 'A Walk With Love & Death' on it's own and the other part with a different unrelated title. I personally think that would have been better. Release both records on the same day and that's job done.

I agree I never go back and listen to this album because my eReader thingy won't keep the two albums separate so jumbles all the songs from both discs together making the listening experience a pain. At the same time no one would buy the soundtrack album on it's own so they knew they had to 'package' it with a proper Melvins album.
-

That is probably what actually happened now you mention it. And i guess it wouldn't have been a big seller on it's own outside of the more diehard Melvins fans. Although i still think presented as it's own thing that (as a statement of intent at least) that it would have served the record itself better. That distinction being beneficial.
-
I don't think these are two separate projects packages together strictly because one is more commercially viable than the other. I think they go together. It's almost like Zaireeka. I listen to DEATH knowing LOVE is coming and vice versa.
-
Supposedly 150 of these double sets were issued on gold vinyl and sold during the 2017 tour. How come you never see any for sale? 150 is a lot to never see any.

Good point. It's strange. I've seen one, it wasn't for sale.

I've got one, it was from San Diego I think. But where are all the others?
-
been listening to the Death album after a long time. i think it's very good.. too bad for the not so great production, especially the guitar . Steven bass work on this is totally great, you can hear his influence a lot
-
I like this record. good stuff.
-
Not that it matters too much either way, but it still frustrates me with this release that i never know which order both albums are supposed to be listened to in. The title of the album itself perhaps suggests it is LOVE first, followed by DEATH. But the bandcamp page organizes the record in the opposite. But then perhaps they only did it on there like that since DEATH is more typical of regular Melvins songs and would appeal to casual listeners and those checking the band out for the first time. Also maybe a key point that reinforces the DEATH then LOVE order is that the packaging of the record firmly highlights that one side is a "soundtrack" so not really a "proper" release but more something tacked onto a normal Melvins record. But then in another twist i noticed that on the CD's disks themselves, LOVE has printed on it "IPC195-1" and DEATH is "IPC195-2". So perhaps it really is LOVE then DEATH! God who knows!!!!
-
The bass on this is amazing. I don’t know if Buzz wrote the baselines or just pulled out songs that he knew Steve could do something cool with. I wouldn’t expect these slow grooves from a guy known for power pop. Very cool and underrated.

totally agree. and nope, Buzz didn't write bass lines, it's all about Mr Steven
-
Of all their vinyl post-2012, A Walk With Love And Death is the one I bid for but was only willing to spend $30 for it. The vinyl colors are pink and the other one is purple.
-
I think LOVE is a continuation of Prick. If you compare the two, there are a lot of soundbites mixed in with dissonant guitars and samples and even some actual songs mixed in. I think in 20 years, we’ll be looking back at this one with greater appreciation. The Melvins fans on this board seem to always be calling for the days of old and weird Melvins, especially during the Steven era when they seem to have settled into a heavier, straightforward, classic rock groove. It’s a challenging listen front to back, but there is some great stuff going on!
-
I like how you think, Bloat. LOVE is gloriously weird, and I do think both records are really leaning in to a TG/Psychic TV kind of approach.
I really hope 2022 brings us the next trio/Steven studio album of new material.
-

Im sure it will. It's funny and surprising in a way that so far this album is essentially the only Steven record with new material we have had! Both Basses Loaded and PAT were bit-part releases with him whilst Five Legged Dog is obviously redo's of songs.
-
the Death album is very underrated imo. songwriting by Buzz is particular, not the classic banging heavy songs , but a 70's psychedelic vibe. I think this album could have been written during the Mark D era
-
Black Heath is at the top of my live wishlist.

Yes! Yes!!!! Can't believe they never played it live, or really anything from this record except "Edgar" and the old classic "Yuthanagia"

Black Heath and Flaming Creature are the two i'd like to see them play.
-
the song written by Steven has grown on me a lot, reminds me of early Alice Cooper
-
Did Steven write Cactus Party? That song sounds very un-Melvins like
-

Sounds like a Buzz tune to me! Although Teri's vocals make it a bit unusual i suppose.
-
i meant the song "What's wrong with you"
-
I'd really like to hear a mix where the random noisy album is just mixed in quietly under the other album. so you hear parts of it fade in when the other gets quiet.
-
I'm sure that can be arranged...
A walk with lovedeath...
-
Does anyone know if the film was ever actually completed or released?
-
Yes, AmRep released a limited LP soundtrack + BluRay. It was about 30 minutes long and had no narrative.
-

I watched it once and it wasn't really worth get excited about. Basically a load of psychedelic visuals - random images bleeding into each other and overlaid etc. A bit of a visual drug trip but, yes there wasn't a story involved or characters or anything.
-
I bought that set, the art edition of the soundtrack and the blu-ray included. Never opened the blu-ray. Thought i might be like "meh" after watching it so I didn't bother. After seeing that quick review - 30 minutes, trippy visuals, no characters/plot I feel like i know myself pretty good. I feel i did the right thing for myself.
-
Interesting. I'd been searching for a stream, but with no luck. I feel comfortable letting it rest now.
Appreciate the responses guys.
Sounds like a nice package to own, but I'm not enthusiastic about plotless psychedelia either
-
Gave this another listen and though I like a few songs on both discs, it's a pretty meh listen. Bottom Tier Melvins for sure.

Interesting take. It's definitely not fantastic but i wouldn't say it's terrible either. In fact i find the Death half pretty good on the whole. Although there are a couple of songs i would eliminate. The Love side is a bit like COD to me - i don't really adore it but i am glad of it's existence and listen to them both occasionally. My main gripe is that the two sides were packaged together as a double album. I think they should have been separate releases. I think both would have benefitted greatly from that.
-
Do you guys see this record as ONE album or TWO? I know it was marketed as two separate albums from the band but since it is all packaged together i tend to see it as one thing.

i tend to see it as one too!

I don't doubt they're related, but since the soundtrack was packaged separately on vinyl I still think of them as a Melvins songs album and a separate Melvins TG type album.

The text on the back that reads "two goddamn records! One is a soundtrack!" does make me keep considering it as two albums. Two artistic statements. But then the fact it's all packaged together really throws me off and to be honest still to this day particularly niggles me. I just wish they had been separately released.
-
I think LOVE would be useless as a singular release. Unlike Prick, it’s mostly found sound, with nothing much to latch onto. I think Love + Death would have been more interesting had the songs been mixed together into a double albums worth of material. I listen to DEATH a lot, but rarely find a head space where I want to listen to LOVE. I’d appreciate these “noise” songs more if they were intermingled with the more straightforward songs.
You know, kinda like the spirit of Stag where you had tape recorder experiments butted up against hard rockers or pop tunes.

I agree. I never play love. I was completely excited when I heard Black Heath. That album sounds like black velvet to me because of those bass tones. I'm not sure how else to articulate it. Dark and warm?

I have a query! The soundtrack version that came with the Blu-Ray movie, that's JUST the 'Love' album on the vinyl right? Because i've read a few places saying it is Love and Death. I'm assuming it is only one vinyl record on all the variations of this soundtrack release.

Isn't the soundtrack version a completely different thing to the double album, though? Or just the LOVE album but with some differences in the song structures.
Gave Love and Death a recent listen. I still think both discs are pretty mid at best.
-
The "soundtrack" is basically just the audio file from the blu ray. Which means it's all the same songs but in a slightly different order, some starting or stopping more abruptly or crossfading.
You're really not missing anything if you have the AWLAD CD set or double LP. I'm all for edited, continuous mixes. But this one does not in any way come across as superior to the album version. I actually think the sequencing of Death is exquisite.

Death is the only Melvins album i ever threw on a tape in the original sequence that i didn't get the overwhelming urge to completely rearrange a lot of the tracks. everything works perfectly where it is. everything serves a purpose. still listening to the same version 6 years later. :D

I agree. Death and Bad Mood Rising are fine musical dining for me.

understood. the other side is just garbage to me. i barely listened once. SORRY/ NOT SORRY!

Listened to Love again last night. I honestly think this half is pretty bad!! It's just about listenable enough but not very engaging. I think Death has a number of cool Melvins songs and would be a fairly good standalone album. Being paired with Love brings it down a lot IMO.
