If you buy into their VIP scheme ($5 a month, cancel any time) you get 24 hours notice on special new releases before they open them up to the great unwashed. The VIP thing is instantaneous, so you can easily subscribe to that, get what you need and unsubscribe again if you wanted. If you use 'VIP' as a discount code at checkout, you get 10% off your order so you probably make that $5 back.
Really liked Fickle Finger of Fate so I'm down for this.

Legit psychedelia fuzz tone, I should know that Fuzz pedal..Probably like a Fuzzface or Octavia. That's a "Supro" gold foil pickup on the guitar. 8)

not bad the new single, you can tell Dale has been influenced a lot by some pop music
The production on this sounds better than anything the Melvins have done lately. I'm assuming toshi recorded this as well.

yep, same goes for the Buzzo solo album which imo has a great production as well
Maybe someone needs to ask them to elaborate what sound or type of sound they are going for in Melvins releases. I mean, if yes there is a distinct difference in the sound of their solo to band, maybe this is something to question or needs further explanation
Personally I don't read into it. I believe a record is a time capsule of a band or artist in that time/moment. I also believe you don't necessarily have to like every release from a particular band or artist. Comparing a release to their last is useless. They have grown, matured, tastes has changed. Even the approach to recording, mixing etc. I always listen to a release and judge it in that. Read about what influenced or what have you and that's it. If it sounds the same, well I move on. Why settle for same old same old. It should be all different. If it's less and you have a hunger for more, then they have done their job. It should never repeat. Perfect example, the 3 Atlantic releases. All 3 different, then they bailed. Couldn't be pigeon holed

Dale Crover is nothing, if not absolute personality and vibe. His role as the Melvins' drummer surely had some sway in that. But his solo material is even more a cut of his personality and ambient style.
Since the Melvins, the drummer has been engaged in several other projects and solo releases, including 2017's The Fickle Finger of Fate and has now completed his most recent album, Rat-A-Tat-Tat, due out January 15. Crover is premiering one of the album's tracks, "I'll Never Say"— which follows his previous single, "Tougher"—with American Songwriter. The new song is some of his best work yet, pouring out ambient essence and meditative notes, drawing the dichotomy between beauty, ugliness, and truth.
"It's dark but pretty sounding," Crover told American Songwriter about "I'll Never Say." "It's about someone dying. It's also telling someone that they're full of shit."
The song at its foundation is simple, built up from baseline chord progressions created on both six and twelve-string acoustics, that build and peak like a coastline road. Crover wrote the basic verse lines, that the whole song is centered around, quite some time ago. And he had just one idea in mind—to write something akin to "Andy Warhol" by David Bowie. The rest was left up in the air, and Crover's dear friend, Steven McDonald, filled in the gaps as the bass player.
"I had the song done except for lyrics before I recorded it," Crover said. "I did guitar and drums first, then handed it over to Steven McDonald to play bass and I never tell Steven what to do, I just let him work his magic. My only request was he play his Hofner hollow body bass. We did vocals next, then added keyboards. Sort of the same process with Toshi (Kasai). We'll look for a sound that fits the mood, then I'll let him come up with a part. I maybe have a little input here or there. Pretty simple instrumentation on this song."
As for the lyrics, which serve as a drone overtop of the riff lines, Crover doesn't even remember where they came from. But they certainly had something to say with lines like, 'It seemed a lot better than telling the truth/I said I would never tell/I'll never tell/ You had me believing that you were ok/I figured that you would pull through/go on, go on, go on, go on.'
"It's funny, because I don't remember writing them," Crover said about the lyrics. "Usually, the way I write is I'll come up with a few lines I really like and write around them. I'll also edit or change words as I'm recording the vocal if I don't think a line or phrase is working. Even if I start with an idea of what I want to write about, it almost always turns into something else that wasn't intended originally."
What started as a simple guitar-based chord progression, bloomed into an ambient and telling song about harsh realities, ignited by sounds from mystical, psychedelic keyboards and flutes, joined together by trashy toned, snare hits. As an avid percussive mind, Crover just hopes it resonates with listeners on every level, as much as it does with him.
"It's one of my favorite songs I've ever written and I'm happy with the way it turned out! Hopefully, the listeners will dig it," he said.
You can check out the rest of the tracklist, including the single "Tougher" and pre-save Rat-A-Tat-Tat here, which includes a funky purple vinyl issue ahead of its release next week.

Got the CD in mailbox today, from Bullmoose. Same style pkg as FFoF CD, basic cardboa' digipak. Will be spinning it soon. Still may order the purple vinyl direct from JN.
I've listened to the album twice through today. I thought it's okay. It's probably sacrilege to say - but i don't think im totally ALL IN on Dale's solo releases. There's a sort of tone or sound that he likes in most of his music that doesn't appeal to me overly. Same went for Fickle Finger too - i just thought it was okay and not something that i was personally interested in purchasing. I know this shouldn't be about comparing, but i do think Buzz is a much better (or at least "interesting to my tastes") songwriter and singer than Dale. Both the Crover albums would get a 7/10 from me while the two Buzzo solo records would get easy 9's!!!

i can see what you mean. i think FF was good. this one i still have to check it out. if i have to be honest nothing can beat Altamont though. Dale is a real rocker, lots of classic influences. he's a pure class songwriter, imo even better than Buzz.
I listened to it today while I was driving down to San Antone... as soon as I got there, I felt compelled to P on the Alamo, then some copper came up to me and said " what the hell do you think you're doin boy?"
I replied "Boy?!??! How dare you pig! I identify myself as a little puppy dog, and little puppy dogs P wherever they want ruff, ruff!!"
So the pig said "get along lil doggy"
I'm liking this new one after a spin. Seems a little more refined than FFoF. I dig the post-Syd/pre-DarkSide Floyd influence.
Agreed on Altamont of course. Civil War Fantasy is hard to beat.

I hope you at least peed in the basement.
Sidenote: I visited my outlaws a few years ago in San Antonio and we had dinner downtown and was like a block away from the Alamo. I insisted on checking it out since we were so close to it. What a waste of time
I listened to this last night and I loved it. Really great work.

Nope.... peed on the statue of Davy Crockett... picked my nose with Jim Bowie's knife. I did do that weird butt crawl thing in the basement though... it's amazing what you can get away with when you identify yourself as a puppy.... I wish I had thought of that when I went to jail last week... maybe next time... then they can put me in the dog pound, and I can free all the dogs, and we can go live in the woods....
The Alamo is boring, the only good thing about the Alamo is Alamo beer from king of the hill.
Aside from a few songs, this album is kind of meh.

nice review, thanks
I've only listened twice but it's a decent record. Following the Melvins turning into more of a solid rock band it works in that sense and the short length helps too.
Anyone get their vinyl? I haven't even received a shipping notice yet :? It's kind of annoying pre-ordering something months in advance and not even getting it close to release date.
Got my shipping notice today.
Jonathan, Joyful Noise's main customer service/dispatch guy, died three weeks ago. I'm grateful we got this release as soon as we did, all things considered.
Well shit. Now I feel like a dick....I did not know that :(
Covid?
I got mine today
Mines been in pre shipment status since the 15th.
Stage 4 cancer, in his hip. He had a limp for a real long time, thought it was an old injury come back to annoy, turns out it was cancer. By the time it was diagnosed it was more or less too late and his decline was rapid. ☹
Rest In Power.
Condolences to his family & friends.

Mine with Victor Villareal as well. Poor old Victor, not flying off the shelves, then? I like the 'obi' with the VIP vinyl.
*Edit* There's a nice live vid of Victor's track on Youtube.
Finally got my copy (Amazon). It's really good. I probably like it more than its predecessor.
I dig the Piso Mojado tracks a LOT. I also love "Untrue Crime" and "I Can't Help You There."
There's a few bits of dissonance and silly noise that I may have to let grow on me. But overall a solid batch of songs performed and recorded well.
Much if the bass on this record is really wobbly. I think I like it but it also might be distracting.
Got mine yesterday from Joyful Noise Recordings with a copy of the GREAT "A Laughing Death In Meatspace" from Tropical Fuck Storm that I bought as a gift for my brother AND an extra free gift from the label: Thor And Friends - 4.
Thank you Joyful Noise!
The Crover is real cool.
i'm the only thinking previous album was better?
one of the two new songs Dale performed live on the latest Melvins TV episode sounded amazing
"Shark Like Overbite" I thought sounded fantastic.
