Melvins Show Reviews / Phoenix, AZ 7/12/13
July 13, 2013, 03:54:20 AM
Few words can describe the events that took place tonight. Here's my attempt to explain what I witnessed.
This was by far the most epic Melvins show I've been too, and that says quite a bit. The set list was put together so well, and highlighted the best that 30 yrs has to offer.
I missed Jared, but really its all about Buzz and Dale, who I might add is looking incredibly svelt and 100% on top of his game. Adding Coady to the mix makes it twice the drumming fury one can ever experience. They were monsters on the drums tonight! Having ended the show with a righteous drum-off it blew everyone's brains out.
Here's the perfect set list -

Hag me
War on wisdom
We are doomed
Sweet willy
Growing disgust
The bloat
Let it all be
You're blessened
Hooch
Night goat
Lizzy
Billy fish
Queen
Water glass
Evil new war god
Lysol
Graveyard

I'm still stunned, and was left weak in the knees after the last drum beat exploded. It was all about the drums tonight. Hats off to Dale & Coady, they stole the show!

Honky was pretty amazing too! Definitely don't miss them!

Oh and congrats to Jared, you're going to make a swell dad!

Melvins Show Reviews / Phoenix, AZ - Show # 48
October 23, 2012, 09:06:56 PM
I thought I was arriving to the show late. I was given the assignment of scoping out the merch table for a COD letterpress and thought that my tardiness would surely mean there was nothing but scraps left, but to my surprise the Melvins van had rolled up just minutes before I did. A big smile filled my face as I observed Buzz and crew carrying in gear, and frantically trying to load up for one of the quickest sound checks I've witnessed. I downed a cider then hung out with my niece in the underage section. It seemed like forever before the Tweak Bird boys finally took the stage. I'll be honest, the first time I saw them I wasn't too keen on their sound. I am eating crow now because they truly blew me away last night. I loved their energy, and psychedelic sounds, and thought the drummer was pretty sexy. They played a quick set, and after a brief intermission Melvins Lite took the stage. Meanwhile, I couldn't help but notice that there was still no merch to be found, aside for some Tweak Bird items. People behind must've thought I kept giving them the stinkeye because I would look back at the table every so often hoping to see Brian's face eagerly setting up to take our money. But still nothing. It was actually rather enjoyable standing in the underage section since it was far less crowded than the 21 & up side, and I was able to secure a spot directly in front of King Buzzo. I couldn't help but notice the changing facial expressions he made during each song, and how he smirked when he played a riff he really liked. My face lit up with a grin from ear to ear watching him strum his guitar so ferociously. Midway thru their set there was a squabble in the crowd, and Buzz started making some banter with the audience, something that I've rarely seen, and which he admitted he rarely does. He talked about the tour, and how this was show #48. You could tell that they are ready for it to be over, and they could finally get some much needed R & R. Meanwhile, I glanced behind still observing an empty merch booth. The show resumed and their momentum continued at breakneck speed, they seemed eager to finish up the show. Sadly, I had to leave midway thru the last song to catch the last train home, and left the show empty handed. Brian and Cliff had actually arrived by that time, but must've been too hired from dealing with a flat tire to haul out the merch. I can understand, but I'm still disappointed that this was the first Melvins show in which I didn't walk out with something in hand, and an empty wallet in my pocket. I was still glad that I got my Melvins fix finally, at least I got some sweet pics of Buzz in lieu of a poster. It was a great show, much needed, and much overdue. Godspeed that the last few days of the tour goes well, and there are no more flat tires in their future.

Melvins Discussion / Cruising with the Melvins?
November 27, 2010, 11:44:57 AM
Would you go on a cruise with the Melvins?

This is becoming very popular now - fans are willing to shell out quite a bit of $$ to go on a cruise with their favorite band(s).  Can you imagine how insane a Melvins cruise would be?  I think the boat might sink!

Melvins Discussion / New Year's Eve 2008/09
October 10, 2008, 12:39:00 AM
I don't know about anyone else,  but I'm anxiously anticipating news about a NYE show.  I'm guessing that it may take place in Seattle this year.  Slim's and GAMH in SF is already booked on NYE, but the Showbox doesn't have anything scheduled.

Hmmmm????  :-k

As I was perusing the newest issue of my local College Times, I turned the page to see to my sweet surprise an interview with King Buzzo.  The interview itself has absolutely nothing to do with Buzz or the Melvins, although they did print a nice pic of them, it's actually a pseudo interview with Kip Winger.

Here it is as it was written:

Three Questions as Kip

When 80's hair metal heartthrob Kip Winger blew us off for an interview because he was on "vocal lockdown", we didn't want to see the questions we've prepared go to waste.  So ever since, we've asked all the musicians we've interviewed if they'd be willing to get into character and answer "Three questions as Kip".  Playing the role of Kip Winger this week will be Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne.

CT: We've already seen disco and 80's synth pop make comebacks.  Do you think a hair metal renaissance is right around the corner?

B as K: It better be, because I've got a huge mortgage.  And I just got divorced.  I don't know how the hell I'm gonna make these child support payments without a resurgence.  Hair metal's comin' back, man, I guarantee it.

CT: Can you let our readers in on your secret to maintaining the perfect 5 o'clock shadow?

B as K: Just never shave.  Actually, mine's fake.  I had them installed.  I had all of them removed and then little tiny fake ones installed so it looks like i never shave.  Plus, it seems relatively obvious that I am gay, and so I'm trying to make it where the 5 o'clock shadow makes it look like I'm at least a little masculine.

CT: What have you been up to for the last 15 years?

B as K: I've been doing huge stacks of blow for 15 years, and when wondering why my career fell apart.

Melvins Album Discussion / Live From London 2006 DVD
December 17, 2007, 10:04:46 PM
(I don't think this has been posted yet?)
Taken from an interview with Mike Patton on http://www.movieweb.com/news/87/25087.php

Are you guys planning anything else? Are you planning to do the Mondo Cane or Peeping Tom DVDs?

Mike Patton: No plans. With Mondo Cane, someone filmed the performances but I haven't seen them yet. I have to admit. I am not crazy about music DVDs. Just the thought of sitting and watching a full concert, you know? From front to start is hard enough in person for me. Let alone on a fucking DVD. To me, unless the footage looks really spectacular...Unless it's a one-time project that I want to document, I have no burning desire to do concert DVDs. That being said, every now and again someone does something really cool. And the next one we will be doing after Patton/Kaada live is The Fantomas Melvins Big Band. That is a similar case. It was a friend of Buzz's, from the Melvins, that happened to be at one of the London shows. And he said, "Hey, I am going to do this whether you want it or not. You don't have to pay me, blah, blah, blah." I was like, "Okay. No harm. No foul." And he sent footage. It is fucking stunning. He did a bunch of visual effects. It is more than just a concert. There is animation in it. It is really well done. We will be putting that out in the summer of 2008.

I had to get my review in before I go to bed so everything is still fresh in my mind.  Not that i'd be able to sleep after such an incredible show!  Fourth time and it still feels and sounds like it's the first.

It was a long intermission between Big Biz and APOD, the Clubhouse always takes forever to get their shit together between sets.  But Coady kept having trouble with his snare drum, while it was getting fix Jared had Toshi break into a  blues song to pass the time.  That was the only thing that stood out from their set, which was still great of course...

Melvins - just as awesome as before - certain riffs and drum solo's still blow me away.  I thought Mechanical Bride was the best song tonight.  Dale and Coady drummed off and on til the very end.

The posters for tonights show weren't made, I guess the artist flaked.  That was the biggest disappointment of the night, but John made it up to me.  I bought the Walsby book too, but it will probably be a while before I read it.

I met up with Branch Breaker, and I saw Green Guy there, but I didn't get a chance to say Hello to him.  I also met a really cool dude - goes by the name Joe, AKA  Smellis' little brother!!!  Hopefully they'll post reviews of the show too...
Good night

Melvins Show Reviews / Plush - Tucson, AZ - Oct. 21st
October 22, 2007, 02:03:28 PM
Another great show indeed!  The venue they played at was extremely small, and at first when we walked in I thought we were walking right into a brothel, the place was decorated with velvet walls,  shag carpet,  nude paintings and statues were everywhere you looked.   It was really dead when we got there, and it almost felt like we were in the wrong place, but the crowd filled out more as the night went on.
I immediately went to the merch booth to chat with John.  I can't tell you guys how incredible this guy is.  He actually told me not too!  He is a sweet heart though, and I think he may even be so kind as to "possibly" give me the other skull.  He is very hesitant to part with it, so I wouldn't be too surprised if he keeps it for himself.  He had tons of the Dallas "Where's Buzzo" posters left, and they were selling the Paris poster from April too.  There was still some vinyl left, but most of the good stuff is already gone.  No more of the Mackie (A)SA cd's left, which is a shame considering how much they are being sold for on Ebay.  He also had a couple of unofficial posters from Austin and Dallas, which were cool.
I was a little spaced out and half drunk from bar hopping earlier, that I didn't pay much attention to APOD.  It was a quick set change between bands.  Big Business blew me away with I'll Give You Something to Cry About, and between songs Jared was telling amusing stories of his previous adventures in Tucson.   The new song, which I didn't pay much attention to at earlier shows was really good, very heavy and solid.
I was able to get up onto a ledge in the windowsill off to the left of the stage, so I had a birds eye view of the entire show.  It was nice to be above everyone, I rarely get to see shows like that.  Most often I'm staring at the back of someones head since I'm such a shorty.  Coady and Dale seem like they were Siamese Twins separated at birth, I can't beeelieve how in sync they are.  The set went by really fast, but I love how the songs flow from one to the other.  Coady sang HOG LEG this time!!!!  Ballad of Dwight was really intense, I love Buzz's vocals, and the drumming was so heavy, I felt like my heart was going to pop out my chest it was such an emotional ending to a great show.  Dale and Coady kept the drumming up at the end, and Dale was singing something about Bloody Mary's, and something easily offending him, yet getting slightly aroused.   :?
We met some cool Tucsonians down there who hooked us up with some herb after the show, didn't get home til 3:30am and drive home seemed to take forever.  I went to bed wishing that this tour would never end.  I hope it's not too long of a wait until the next time we see them on tour again.

Melvins Show Reviews / Gothic Theater, Denver 9/22/07
September 23, 2007, 04:29:56 AM
This was another fantastic show, as I'm sure you would've already guessed.  Not much to really say, except that John is by far the greatest merch man on the face of this planet.  He hooked me up majorly tonight, and i wish I could've been able to tip him more than $10.  He gave me three of the posters (which were going for $25 each), two sticker sets, an ASA cd for my friend, and this styrofoam skull signed by everyone on tour, all for $60!  The skull is the absolutely coolest thing I've ever seen, which he said costed a few bucks at the store, and which I would've actually paid a helluva lot more for.  He also had Dale's bass drum head for sale too for $75, signed by everyone.  No one snatched that up so it will I guess still be for sale on their next tour stop.

This has  been an unforgettable weekend, I only wish I had more money to spend on merch, and the other only thing that could complete it is if I was going to tomorrow night's show in Colorado Springs.

Wow, seriously wow!  It's hard to find the exact word to describe the intensity of the show, and for those of you who've seen them on this tour so far, you know exactly what I'm saying.

My friend Kellee, and I thought we were running really late because we didn't make it up to Ft. Collins til about 8:15, but when we got inside there was only a handful of people there - the show didn't actually get going until 9:30ish.  I went to the merch booth right away and got the posters, which John said is supposedly 3-D if you got the glasses to see it with.  He really is such an awesome guy, he'll cut deals on stuff, and hold your shit for you til the show is thru, and he said he'd hold two posters for me for the Denver show since only 121 were printed.  He said he remembered Hanz, remembered him as "the dude from Montesano".  After the show I went back because they had stickers, which I had never seen.  He said they were just handed to him that night, and they were being sold in a set of three for $5, with a Porn sticker thrown in for free.  He sold me three sets for $10.

So the show finally got started around 9:30 with the POD screening.  I really liked the movie, the soundtrack is great and I love the little character.  I didn't recognize any of Dalek's stuff until that night, and when I realized I'd seen the creature before from a friend who had found a framed Dalek print in the trash a few months back.

Big Business came on about 15 min. after the movie ended, and by that time I had made my way up to the very front, and got a nice spot right in front of Jared.   Toshi was on guitar, and Dale joined them towards the end for Easter Romantic and Evil Midevil.  Their set was incredible, except for a few mess ups from Jared.  My friend is completely smitten with Coady, she had her eyes fixed on him the entire night.

Melvins came next, set list was exactly the same.  I wanted to keep my prime spot in the front, and was determine to for as long as I could handle the madness behind me.  It wasn't too bad at first, and this cute redhead named Cherry claimed a spot next to me, and was helping me keep ahold of our spot, up until some tweekers came up there and started going crazy.  My friend Kellee got hit in the head with a bottle, but she was alright.  Then during Lizzie, those people went insane and that girl Cherry got knocked down, the tweekers got all spastic and just trampled all over her.  Her dress got torn and boobs came flying out, she got cut up pretty bad too because of all sorts of broken glass on the ground.  The tweekers ended up getting kicked out, and one of their friends tried starting a fight with Cherry's boyfriend after the show.  That whole situation kinda killed the good vibe I had going the entire night.  It was hard to get back into the show after that big distraction.

I have to agree with Hanz that Mechanical Bride really works well live, that and BoDF were my favorite songs.  I got some great pics that I will try to get posted soon.  At the end of the show, Buzz and Jared left the stage, and Coady came to the front of the stage with a golf club and ball and tee'd off into the audience.  It was hilarious, he faked us out three times before finally sending the ball flying towards the back of the theater.

The show was spectacular, and by far the best show I've ever been to, looking forward to doing this all over again tonight....
