Melvins Show Reviews / Canes SD 10-17-09

What a fun night! I was able to take a few pictures over the evening. Unfortunately no BHS pics due to severe threats from security. The security guys kicked out tons of people over the night. Lots of unhappy dudes. The BHS looked awesome up on stage with their projectors and what not. Girlfriend got to meet Buzzo before the show. More on everything later. Happy Sunday Fun Day to you all!

Melvins Discussion / A ponder...
January 27, 2009, 07:32:25 PM
Though this probably has no relevance to anything whatsoever and I can't even really come up with any significance regarding this being a fact...

The Melvins only have three albums (GPT, POTRE and NWB) with songs that are named after the album (or vice-versa, etc.)

:P yay :P

How many of you have seen the wonderfully eloquent and enjoyable film known as "Class Of Nuke 'Em High"?

I believe that the Melvins are taking on singing the Star Spangled Banner, on their recent world tour, in a tribute to the Cretins in the movie "Class of Nuke 'Em High"..these characters were the stars of this fabulous movie. If you haven't gotten to see this movie than please join the Blockbuster or Netflix movie mail service (unless you aren't already or just try to find it at the store) to be able to get yourself a copy of this excellent production of the 1980's. Thank you.

Have you ever found yourself making a Melvins "mixtape" for somebody?..could be anybody in your life really that is interested in maybe getting to hear what/who the Melvins are and why do you have a Melvin's shirt with a pooping dog on it?

This person, I've found to be, is my girlfriends mother. Who, by chance,  is very keen to the whole rock and roll and even (gasp) metal scene..which is to say she was cool with going to OzzFest and in general rocking out and headbanging/hair whipping, etc.

So this got me thinking that maybe some of you have some interesting playlists (not setlists, I already know that) of the Melvins. Now I know about you album purists and I am one of you in a big way but this thread is just a means to express any lists of the Melvin's songs beyond the album or live that are used to give an example of what the band is like. With or Without exposing them to some of the Melvins other songs. Criticism welcomed. Anyway...here goes

a mix of (live and) album material for my girl's mom so she can get to know the melvins

1. At A Crawl (2-22-94)
2. Roadbull
3. Junebug
4. Going Blind
5. Joan of Arc
6. The Green Manalishi pt. 1:)
7. The Green Manalishi pt. 2:)
8. The Brain Center at Whipples
9. A History of Drunks
10. Civilized Worm
11. Tequila (5-27-00)
12. Up the Dumper (5-27-00)
13. Berthas (5-27-00)
14. The Ballad of Dwight Fry (03-07-04)
15. Halo of Flies (03-07-04)
16. Promise Me (03-07-04)

I kept it to about an hour so as to not overwhelm. This was obviously before I got Nude With Boots in my hands or else I would've included a fair bit of that album as well. Though I haven't gotten feedback from this collection yet so we'll see..

I started driving all the way from San Diego to go see this show in SF..now that's not that big of a deal to me because I am originally from the Bay Area and I spend a lot of time there and I needed to come back into town given i had just moved to SD in the previous few months..so for me I got to come home, pack up some new things to take back down to my new home, see the melvins, see the dark knight on IMAX, go to the exploratorium...etc etc..a very fulfilling weekend...

so i arrived quite early for the melvins show in san francisco, we had left sd at about ten and went straight to the show (only one stop too for gas in paso robles, i wonder why i just kept driving??) and got there at seven only to find an excellent parking spot on the same street within sight of the entrance to slims..this, my friends, is an anomoly in the city, so i was quite happy..i took a dump in the nearby sports authority and proceeded my way to the entrance at slims...got my tickets..i had bought dinner tickets for tonight since i am still recooperating from knee surgery about a month and a half ago, no floor for me!!...so once i was inside i ordered drinks and was able to pick up some merch and go put it back in my car so it wouldn't be a burdon during the show...i picked up the egg nog bunnys shirt for myself, see you in hell for my girlfriend and nude with boots for the road trip back down south..once i was back my food had arrived and i was totally ready for another melvins experience...

as soon as slims pulled up the screen to reveal the stage i was fully attentive..though i was quite surprised...this morningstar rising band...is quite the band indeed...with probably the absolute most obscure band members i could imagine playing together...so first, there is tim moss on one side of the stage doing some stuff with a guitar and pedals, basically some noise...then on the other side was toshii and his soundscape type feel to playing, whatever...but that is definitely not the best part about this band...there was a girl drummer...and not any ordinary girl drummer...she was like three..seriously, like a three or four year old blonde, baby girl drummer that would just bang the snare, hit the cymbals around, and maybe roll around the toms once...then she would get up, and go chat with toshii...then go back and play again..go mingle with toshi again..then play with a flashlight..now i'm not sure whose daughter this might be or whatever but it was definitely a melvin-worthy opening act...at one point i considered it to be some off shoot of PORN or something like that...maybe dale's daughter filling in with him and special guest toshii??..until there is a confirmation of this, i wont have a clue who that little girl was...so anyway, that eventually ended and there was another break..

big business and all their mighty glory came to the stage and blew everybody awaaayy...when the melvins came on everything was just crazy for me...i was up on the balcony so i felt like rocking out but i kinda kept myself from doing it...i focused on taking some pictures (which will eventually be posted here, i use film so it takes me a while to get my results)..through all the songs i was just blown away..i guess this should've been mentioned previously in this review but i hadn't seen the melvins/bb combination yet and it fully satisfied my expectations...especially with the setlist being what it was...as was already stated by somebody else they played the same set as before..which really had no low points to it at all, not that a melvins show had those like other band's shows..i was extremely joyed to be able to experience eye flys...i love the nwb stuff soo much...live it sounds perfect..like they wrote it on the album keeping in mind that they will be playing it live and they will be able to get to rock out all these amazing songs so much harder in the live atmosphere and environment...buzz looked like he was having a lot of fun...even all the way from the back, which by the way, sounded fucking incredible...such good sound at this show...senile animal stuff killed it, i AM a big civilized worm fan so that song killed me..buzz's scream on that one just...yea...the old songs were all great...i wish i knew the exact setlist but i believe they ended with: my generation (melvins style), star spangled banner and boris...which absolutely, positively was the first song i ever desired the melvins to play live in my presense and my first time to witness...this version of boris (not to mention the entire show) had a huge rockstar, kickass, strong feel to it...two drum sets fucking kill and those two drummers are fucking incredible..

i can't wait to see my pictures and those will be on there way here eventually too..the few below came out nicely from my girlfriend's digital camera..can't wait to see them again here in san diego in august (wont have to drive that far this time)..i don't know what else to say really :-k :-k :-k ...i love the melvins :love::love: ....just kidding..    ...see you in hell melvins!!!

and during the star spangled banner..

rock and roll..
