Melvins Discussion / The Maggot, goddamit

Even HAT got a proper vinyl release, which sounds great. WTF is up with holding this record hostage from being a single black vinyl record offered for sale to vinyl record consumers?

Melvins Show Reviews / Santos Party House NYC 6-29
June 30, 2015, 03:32:40 PM
I have lost count how many times I have seen the Melvins, but I had missed them on their last few tours and had never seen them with Pinkus. Holy shit; so great to see them back as a three piece, and I found Pinkus to be more engaging to watch than Buzz or Dale, and the low end of his bass was so clean and clear. The sound was excellent overall. Opening act was amazing. I have no idea what the setlist was; I have not really kept up on the new material, but apparently bought the very last Hold it In CD on the merch table.

Excellent night. Long live the Melvins

I was cranking The Maggot last night and it occurred to me how much the Melvins collector community needs a high-quality audiophile vinyl edition of the Trilogy. The 3xLP pic disc just doesn't cut it sound quality-wise, plus, if they can put out a 4LP set of one CD, just think what how many LPs the Trilogy would be at 45RPM? None of this etching-on-one-side bullshit, though; the 45 RPM is intended for enhanced sound quality.

C'mon Buzz & Dale! Let's make this happen!  You know Melvins fanatics would snap this release up in a heartbeat!

So I go to get my ticket for the Melvins at the Music Hall of Williamsburg & they want 25 bucks for each ticket. At first, I thought that was some sort of fuel surcharge tacked onto the ticket price, but then I check the prices of other dates & they are the usual $15.00.

What gives maaaaaaan?

Melvins Show Reviews / Hoboken 10/16, Brooklyn 10/17
October 17, 2006, 12:57:01 PM
FUCK YES.

Everything people on this board have been saying is true. Last night's Hoboken show was amazing. Maxwell's must hold anywhere from 150 -250 people, maximum, and this show had been sold out for a number of weeks. It was like seeing these fuckers in my living room, the place was so small. The only thing was that the stage was not that elevated, so I couldn't get a good look at Cody or Dale until the end of the show when the moshing began & I was able to move up closer.

Jared looks & acts like a junior Buzzo in training. His bass playing with the Melvins was the most versatile I had heard out of him, and it was truly amazing to see Big Business morph into the Melvins right before my eyes. BB's new songs sound tight as hell, and Cody is just so damn fun to watch play them drums.

The sound quality was extremely good. Buzzo seemed to be more of a bandleader than a guitar player. Or at least he seemed to be letting the rhythem section take over for this tour. Ugh. So tired. I'll try to write more later. And of course, i have tonight's concert to report on soon too  :)

Melvins Discussion / who is going to the NY/NJ shows?
September 23, 2006, 10:41:48 PM
I got tix to both the Maxwell's gig in Hoboken & the show at Warsaw in Brooklyn. It iwll be my first trip to Jersey to see a concert in years. I think Maxwell's is already sold out. Not surprising, since only about 400 people can fit into that place. Warsaw is an equally awesome venue, but much bigger.

Anybody wanna meet up before the shows? PM me, or respond to this thread.

Mindblowing is an adjective that does not even begin to describe this show.

First off, the crowd was packed full of musicians. I sat right behind Thurston Moore & Kim Gordon. I also saw Lee Ranaldo, David Byrne, Steven O'Malley & Greg Anderson. In a theater that seats maybe 500 people. I was in the 5th row, right in front of Dale's drumkit. It was loud as fuck, and completely chaotic & dark. None of the people on stage were illuminated at any point during the show (which I liked, actually).

The show starts out in complete blackness with Haino singing a sweet melody without a mic. I had seen him before & had never heard a melodic side to him. He goes on for about 5-10 minutes in darkness, and then the first film (JO) starts. It's a pretty fucked up film (all of them are, but they were all really good too). JO visually compares a Joan of Arc festival in France with a hot dog eating contest in Coney Island. By the time the film had started, Haino picked up his guitar & turned on his 4 Marshall Amps. He starts to accompany the film with guitar. Haino was off to the side of the stage & had his own monitor so he could sync his playing with the film. My favorite part was when he added the vocals to his playing. The music really fit the film quite well. Mournful at times, chaotic at others. Really hard for me to describe, but very much in the style of his playing. I think it was about a half hour or so long. Then there was an intermission.

Then the Melvins came on & Kranky Klaus played. Fuckin' GREAT movie. The Melvins did their modified version of Pigs of the Roman Empire. There was a different drum intro, and they also slipped in parts of Lysol into it, along with other bits of noise & chaos. Without a pause, the next film started & I was amazed to see Haino return to the stage. From what the program said, it seemed that both Haino & the Melvins would be playing seperately.

Spook House & BB were the next films. All of Janie's movies have to do with cultural rituals, and Spook House is about Halloween in Detroit. I grew up in Detroit, so this movie really hit home for me. Scary as hell music. Chaotic noise that eventually turned rhythmic. Dave Scott Stone did a fantastic noise intro at the begining, and then walked around the audience crashing a cymbal. The music for this one was basically a noise fan's wet dream. The visuals were wonderful & reminded me of my childhood & Devil's Night in Detroit. BB was the final film. It was about boys wrestling in their back yard. This was the proper start of Lysol. They had been teasing us with bits and pieces of it all night, but this was when Buzz started in with the vocals. Haino was doing a noise guitar over the Melvins, which was both unnerving because it was so unusual & unexpected, but it really fit the music. The visuals of these boys bashing each other with chairs and jumping off the roof of a house got a bit much after a while & I was just digging the music. It ended abruptly & unceremonieously.

whew. that's it.

Big Business delivered a fantastic set at the Knitting Factory in NY last night. It was my first time seeing them & judging by their performance, they should fit in quite well with the Melvins. Coady Willis sounded like Keith Moon  :D

After the show I asked Jared if he was getting a lot of people asking about them collaborating with Melvins & he said yes. He said that these upcoming west coast shows are on more of test or trial basis. Nothing is set in stone after these shows. BB joining the Melvins is not a permanent thing & they have no plans as of yet to record anything together. Dave Scott Stone was the mutual contact between the two bands, and he will be
joining them as the opening act on that west coast tour. BB will most likely do a set before they play with the Melvins too.

So, all you lucky west coast fuckers will be treated to a monster noise & rock extravaganza later on this year.

Melvins Discussion / what would be the chances
April 16, 2004, 10:46:36 PM
what would be the chances of the Melvins releasing a CD quality recording of the 20th anniversary gigs at some point down the line? Do they record themselves that often, if even for thier own reference?

I've never heard them & was thinking abut picking up Dale's record. are any better than the others? I am not a Melvins completist, so I wasn't planning on getting all of them. What year were they made?
