Melvins Discussion / Re: Bad Mood Rising
« on: September 20, 2022, 08:06:02 AM »
I don't get the whole Fuck Bezos thing. Sure no one likes Amazon or large corporations but if they stock what you want what's the problem?

I think the whole Fuck Bezos thing comes from Amazon destroying the competition. Record stores can't compete with Amazon prices so the consumer 9 times out of 10 will go with the cheaper option, therefore further destroying record stores.

Before Napster and all that happened I remember in the late 90's here in Australia we had a big chain store start up and expand everywhere called JB Hi-Fi. Due to their behemoth like purchasing power they undercut all the local record stores by selling their CD's $10 cheaper than them. You could argue the record stores were already gouging us the consumer too much anyway $30 for CD's and $35-$40 for import CD's like John Zorn stuff.

But when JB Hi-Fi started up they didn't sell imports but all their standard CD's were $20 each and the record stores just couldn't compete with that and quickly started going out of business in my city Big Star Records, Verandah Music, Andromeda, Bank Street Records all these stores just disappeared almost overnight. Then only about a year or two after JB had cornered the CD market, Napster and downloads happened and destroyed it all anyway, which obviously would've happened regardless.

Now Amazon on a much bigger global scale has gobbled up not just the CD/Vinyl market but plenty of other markets too. My local JB Hi-Fi has not only stopped selling CD's/Vinyl but earlier this year got rid of all their DVD/Blu-ray/4K sections too and the local Sanity (much smaller version of JB) closed it's doors last month too. They couldn't compete with Amazon's prices either.

it's not just saving money either. i don't have time to go to the record store these days and i know if i did i'd walk out of there with stuff i wasn't even thinking about when i walked in. on Amazon i can buy pants, a walkman cassette deck, a cd and whatever else i need and it's delivered to my house for almost nothing.

Like most of us here I buy a lot of things off of Amazon just for convenience sake. It's pretty nuts that I can have a thought occur, pull my phone out, order it and it's at my door in 24-48 hours. Can't really beat that.

I can't bring myself to buy vinyl from them though.

I miss good independent record stores. Used to have half a dozen in my area and they are all gone now.

As a serious collector, I pretty much order direct from the label or through an independent store on Discogs.

I mistakenly bought vinyl twice through Amazon and once the LP was packed in a huge box just rattling around the second time it was crammed into a soft mailing envelope and the jacket was completely mangled.

I prefer to buy my records from people who love records.

I completely spaced that these were going up today..

I remembered at 20 min after they did and was immediately pissed assuming I had missed out.

Checked anyway and lo and behold they were still available

Snagged the one I wanted

Guess it was my lucky day!

Might have to drive to Syracuse for this. Only 2 hours west for me.

Couldn't see the Ministry tour as is was Buffalo or Long Island.

Any chance these could be shipping from Kalamazoo?  Just received an unexpected tracking notification from USPS...

Mine just showed up today. Completely unexpectedly. And yes,
Blixt Merchandise
Kalamazoo Michigan

thanks to Melvins I checked Brainiac, wow!!
You had never listened to them before!!?!?!? Im quite surprised by that. 'Hissing Prigs In Static Couture' is a 90's classic. Quite an innovative band for their time. They broke up after their singer was killed in a car crash i think.

I heard them by name only but I wasn't familiar with their stuff, I love them, very innovative as you said

Really unique band for sure

There is a great documentary on them
Definitely worth checking out (and Buzz is in it)

Saw them do "The Bit" live the second time I saw them. They were a lot better the 1st (for Blood Mountain)
That was the highlight of the night.

......George Jones though.  =D>

Cool lineup

Although I could care less about seeing Ministry these days. Haven't done anything interesting in long time and have become a parody of themselves

I thankfully got to see them for Psalm 69 in '92 that was damn good

That said.. if they are celebrating "A Mind" it could be really good?.. and COC  :-k

Melvins shouldn't open for anyone these days though.

And the closest they are coming is like close to 4 hours away in NYC (Hungtington)

I'm conflicted

For most of these turntables you can buy an external power supply. These small boxes usually also have a switch 33/45 that steers the motor directly without switching the belt on the pulley. I bought one for my rega player. I think it was 200 to 300.

Yes.. One of these. Great investment because it is a total pain to switch speeds on a belt drive. And you end up stretching the belt out over time too. Until I got this I rarely played any of my 45rpm records too because of that.
I got that one for my Rega turntable also. I have the Planar 3.
It's a beauty. I love it's simplistic elegance and it has one of the best tonearms around for it's price point.

It's this one.

Whoa. That's a beautiful turntable. I've just sold mine (bought new in around 1981) and will be looking for something like this to replace it. Reading the blurb, I see it increases stiffness, too, which has to be a bonus.

Jules.. Rega is an Iconic producer and they are made in the UK. Check them out. I love mine

Buzz would say he doesn't own a turntable
I can totally see him saying that. I would guess that most people who buy these on vinyl (and most vinyl purchasers out there) don't really intend on playing them anyway. It's just a collectors thing so i doubt it matters too much that a song is missing or such.

This quote makes no sense to me. Yes I "Collect" records. But it is because I love to listen to music on vinyl.
I couldn't imagine buying records and not playing them.

Got my pink HAT from Europecac yesterday. Sounds great! No warping or any other issue. Props to Mackie and whoever did the new layouts.

By far my favorite melvins record. Ahh, I wish I could time travel back to 2002 and see them again on tour with Rutmanis. BEST. melvins. BASSIST. EVER.

My copies just arrived the other day.

HAT looks fantastic. Very well done indeed!
So happy to finally have this on a 12" slab. Been wishing for years to have it!

I ordered through Blixt also and have had no updates since making the order in November  :?

I've read excerpts from a bunch of the interviews on his Facebook page. Seems like he was working on it for so long!

Happy to see it's done.

Ordering it now.

Intriguing news here. More re-issued vinyl and that four albums thing. Surely must be the long mentioned "history of rock" project!

"We have some reissues of old vinyl that will be coming out, including “Hostile Ambient Takeover” and “Gluey Porch Treatments.” We have B Sides of “Hostile Ambient Takeover,” coming out of the EP, in probably the next few weeks. Also, we’re reissuing the “Bride Screamed Murder” vinyl and the “Senile Animal” vinyl. That’s all coming out at some point too, with new artwork. So there’s lots and lots on the horizon for me. I’m working on a book as well. I have a photography book that’s going to come out at some point, all sorts of things. Keep writing music, probably a new album. I’ve got a big thing planned for the Melvins. It’s probably going to be four albums in length, but I’m not going to tell you exactly what it is — not yet, not until we get it done." - Buzz

Wow

HAT on vinyl finally.. Yes!
Gluey porch Treatments. Awesome!
Buzz is writing his autobiography? Holy shit!

He dropped a lot of hints to so many things!.. Obviously not touring has gotten a lot of gears turning.
