I haven't heard the new album yet apart from that long track, but otherwise I agree with everything you say.

Fortunately Melvins are still one of the best live bands on the planet, and as long as they keep delivering that energy on stage and I get to see them every other year I'm fine and can do without new albums.

But yeah, a different producer sounds like a good idea.
That collaboration with Helms Alee kinda proves the point, that to me was the best stuff they've released in the last decade.
Quote from: benton netty on April 09, 2024, 04:37:37 PMWelp, the records's out there in the dark corners of the internet. Just had my first listen, and I gotta say I didn't feel much of anything. It's probably not fair to fixate on the way it was made, but it kinda sounds like every song is just one simple riff with tons of stuff piled on. These songs don't have much in the way of dynamics or surprises. I dunno. It just kinda sounds like the last however many records, just jammier.

The Melvins still have never made a *bad* album, but, at this point, they've made a habit out of making mediocre ones. This is no different. They just seem lazy or tired, here. Love them, but it just kinda seems like they're farting around.

The best tune was the long one up top, although it just drifts off into half-cocked riffing at some point after an intriguing first few minutes and then starts cannibalizing "Night Goat" and "Boris" a bit.

It's not realistic to ask for "Stoner Witch" energy and composition, again, but howsabout "Brain Center at Whipples" energy? These tracks just kinda meander.

I'll listen more and hope to like it better, but I've kinda had this same experience with them for years, now, so I won't expect much to change, for me.

Melvins rule forever, but ya know. You can't rule forever.

Interesting that with their huge back catalogue Buzz is putting 3 cover versions in there.

A surprisingly conservative selection, apart from the Wipers.
Buzz' movie list is much more eclectic.

Buzz said about a European tour next year. Plus they would never travel all the way to Germany for a single show!!
They DID travel all the way to Hellfest in 2011 for a single show though.
If the guarantee is good enough and covers travel costs it can work.
But I'm sure they'll try to book more dates around that festival date.

Has anyone ever noticed, in the movie "A Clockwork Orange", when Alex is walking through the record store, he stops for a minute, and in the background, you can see a record with what looks to be the same Indian painting on it, with the white background?

Have seen that movie a thousand times, but never noticed that. Will check it out next time I watch it.

Excellent recording of an incredible show.

I know cause I was there... still one my favourite shows ever.

I'm hoping this guy will also have video from the Bielefeld show from the same tour, as there is a SBD recording that could be sync'd up....

Wow, thanks so much, what a great find - that Essen show is fantastic.
The 20 final minutes with 'Shevil' & the extended 'Dwight Fry' with Dale just bashing the cymbals for a few minutes... stoically playing quietly through all the chatter etc... Just amazing.
I was at that Essen show (actually worked on all the German dates of that tour). Still one of my best jobs ever. And one of the best run of shows I've ever seen. Could watch Dale working out on the drums for hours...

Melvins Discussion / Re: Melvins Lord of the Flies

I've been wondering about this for a while.
Maybe it's because Buzz thinks nobody cares about records anymore anyway he does not want to spend the time and money?

first of all I hope Patton gets well soon. I think he's a very prolific artist, involved with many different projects. I think Buzz doesn't feel this work ethic. to start a project and then to put it on hiatus,  concentrating on something totally different. on the other side, keeping things super busy doesn't necessairly mean quality.
we all think about Fantomas as a cult band because they released just a few (killer) albums
Couldn't have put this any better.
Patton's absolutely dedicated to his art. Just look at the man's discography. Who else has tons of super weird experimental stuff on his resume while being in one of the most commercially successful rock bands on the planet the way he does?

The Bit
Sacrifice
The Man With The Laughing Hand Is Dead
Let It All Be
Enchanted Thoughtfist (Enchanted Al Remix)
Shevil (my favourite Melvins song ever since it was released. too bad Buzz seemingly lost interest in writing these quiet brooding tracks...)

Fun little write-up on the 25th anniversary of 'Stag' in The Quietus, including a mention of this board:

Are these Melvins TV things able to be downloaded at all?
Not easily. Recorded all the streams but sound and image are a little off-sync.
I'm hoping for an eventual BluRay release. Where you hopefully also can just play the tracks without the 'interviews'...  8)
