Melvins Discussion / Re: new dates
« on: June 12, 2008, 08:50:35 AM »
I hate the house of blues so much. Goddammit! I'm not sure if my love for Melvins is stronger than my hate for HOB.

I feel the same way about Emo's.

Here's a band for you: http://www.myspace.com/thefuckemosonmyspace

 :D I wonder if they've ever played at Emo's.  :-k
They did, but that was before they were called the Fuckemos.

They changed their name when Emo's started charging people $2 to get into local shows.

and DAMN YOU MELVINS PLAY IN OKLAHOMA  :x

What do you think the odds are of the Melvins playing in Oklahoma City?  I don't feel like driving to Texas.

What's wrong with Texas??   :x

*actually there are alot of things wrong with Texas  :|
237 miles of space, that's what's wrong.  I'd be paying 5x more on gas than on the ticket.  Unless some handsome, charitable man offered to pick me up on the way.

Just can't be.

If Buzz killed him, it's only right he claim the right to his remains.

Hopefully copious amounts of his dusty carbon remains will be consumed before each show on the new tour.  Just to give it that extra kick.

When is Coady gonna wear something with longer sleeves?

Jared is very intimidating when he's not making funny faces.

hated it but i knew i would

they shouldve taken more time to write
Maybe you hated it for the simple fact you knew you would?

When did Buzzo take time to write anything?

Buzz talked about this before;

he said (paraphrasing) I don't want some 13 year old kid to not get into Melvins
because of some little sticker on our album about using a profanity.
To be honest more 13 year olds and people in general would buy it if it DID have a parental advisory on it.

I never really considered anything Melvins have done "doom."  Even though they're credited with inventing sludge a lot I don't think modern sludge or even sludge emerging shortly after resembles anything Melvins.

Melvins know no genres, and again they defy their label with Nude With Boots.

So far I like all the stuff with Big Biz better than old Melvins

Just wondering if anyone else agrees. Anyone?

Every time I put on GPT I can't help but thinking 'goddamn! they were goddamn peaking here!'.
I like to think about it like this.

The Melvins were completely different people then.  The music was completely different, and will always continue to be completely different.  I don't think they're ever compelled to record another album that sounds like Gluey or Ozma or Houdini or Stoner Witch, so comparing old and new is kind of pointless, when all that really matters is what is yet to come.

The classic Melvins sound has been copied many times, and they continuously show an ability to grow and change beyond anything ever expected from them, without emulating some other style completely.  Buzzo's guitar work is better than it's ever been, in my opinion.  He's always come up with odd and catchy rhythms, but the riffing has become even better, more "standard" yeah, but still incredibly original and captivating.  Civilized Worm and Billy Fish are probably my favorite examples of this...

But yeah, I am a relatively new fan, so I guess I've experienced the Melvins differently than most of you old farts and look at it with a relatively fresh viewpoint.  I'm just eager for what the future brings and less worried about "the glory days."

So far I like all the stuff with Big Biz better than old Melvins, but it's really hard to say that when most of it is incomparable.

I first discovered the Melvins just before (A) Senile Animal came out, and only listened to old stuff (HAT and before) during that time, without even knowing (A)SA was coming out or had come out, and I didn't get to hear it until nearly a year after the fact, but it blew my mind and quickly became one of my favorite records of all time.

I want to see at least one more album done with Big Biz, but think it'd be better for them to eventually part ways and do something new with some fresh faces in the band, keeping the core duo intact ofcourse.

Night Goat cover recorded in the Melvan... that's more than epic, and I can bet the small space adds a certain echoey being-in-a-van type effect to the vocals.

I don't even have a 4 track or anything... just a relatively suitable studio mic hooked up to a preamp and then my PC that I put right next to my amp.  There's not very much outside noise that gets in, and I think it sounds relatively good for such a ghetto rig.

Now if I could play better.  I have a friend who's an accomplished guitarist but he's kind of a drifter and hard to get ahold.  Next time I see him I'll force him to learn some Melvins songs and put some guitar recordings up.

If they come to Oklahoma I will be there along with the 30 other people that show up (who all traveled from out of state to see them).

If not, I might have to make one of the Texas shows.
