AV Club really seems to dig the melvins these days.

Don't know if anyone posted this earlier. It's less impressive than you might think, but I thought I'd share.

My personal highlights:

• Opened with "Dog Island"
• "Friends Before Larry" and "A Really Long Wait."
• Dale getting up mid-song and draping his beefy arm around Jared to harmonize with him. (I won't spoil which song.)
• They played a song I hadn't heard before but that I suspect is on Freak Puke because it sounded very new-melvinsy.

And to the steroid-pumping Ed Hardy-sporting jackass who muscled his way front of me and wouldn't stop gyrating around like a palsy-addled spastic: I jiu-jitsued back in front of you and your disgusting sow of a girlfriend for good the second the auto-moshing, invisible-arrow-shooting hippy clown standing next to me collided into you, HAHA LOSER.

Has this song ever been played live? If so, does anyone have a bootleg to upload? And if the melvins haven't played it live, why the fuck not, are they retarded or something??

Well, they did now!

I love this song. It has everything a man's man's man needs: an old Indian chanting, endless blues-scale noodling, and Star Trek.

PRICK in general is a masterclass of melvins badassery. If you disagree, you're unAmerican.

The Fantomas/Melvins Big Band Millennium Monster Works album is the worst album Buzz and Dale have ever released.

Excellent. I'm glad we got that settled.

If you haven't tried this already and have VLC (or some other media player that lets you adjust playback speed), listen to "The Fool, the Meddling Idiot" at double-tempo, then listen to "Brain Center at the Whipples" at half-speed.

AWESOME!

The keyboard part on "The Fool" sounds like music from the Mega Man games on the NES.

And what if that drummer was Ringo Starr??

For a thin guy like him to whack those drums as hard as he does, I'd say he must eat a ton of high-calorie food constantly, like the Flash. So I'm wondering: As he ages and his metabolism slows down, will he gain a lot of weight like Dale has? Or does Dale's weight gain have more to do with constant boozin'?

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE. DISCUSS.

So I'm watching This Is Spinal Tap on cable right now, and marty points out this fact to the band, and it got me thinking about an interview Buzz did not too long ago wherein he said that the age range of audiences at the melvins' shows appears to have remained static -- late-teens to late-20s -- even after the band has been around for 25 years. This means that most melvins fans eventually outgrow the band.

Today's question for discussion is, what do these people end up listening to?

Coldplay?
Enya?
Vivaldi?

Are the melvins really mainly for "young boys"?

there seem to be a growing number of these. is this something fans of other bands do, or is there something about melvins fans specifically that lead them to create such things, i.e., too much time on hand/lack of job? anyone here responsible for anything such as these?

for several years now, it has seemed as though the cowbell as a device of musical irony had long since played itself out.

i think it may have peaked with will ferrell's and christopher walken's now-legendary "more cowbell!" SNL skit, and by the time high school kids started posting thousands of videos of themselves imitating that skit for increasingly diminishing humor returns, the cowbell had become yesterday's catch-phrase: a "don't have a cow, man" of self-aware musical hipsterism. not even queens of the stone age's attempt to resuscitate the basic idea by substituting the cowbell with a wood block on "little sister" could save the cowbell's usefulness as anything but something to hang around a cow's neck.

that is, until "suicide in progress" was released to the salivating masses.

dale crover has long been a cowbell virtuoso, taking it to strange, new places unimagineable to the blue oyster cult. exhibit A, of course, is the cowbell on "let it all be," which acts as a counter-beat to the primary rhythm of the song's first half. when you remember that The Bootlicker debuted a good solid six months before the "more cowbell" skit, the melvins' cultural impact -- far beyond that whole inspiring kurt cobain to become a rockstar jimmyjazz we're all too familiar with -- cannot be denied.

i have my criticisms of Nude With Boots as a whole, to be sure. but the sassy, earnest-but-winking spurts of cowbell on "suicide in progress" -- especially when paired with the ribbon crasher -- have restored my faith in the cowbell's longevity. played out? sure. but now, much like roller skates and the skinny tie, the cowbell has now been imbued with a post-ironic sheen: "it's  so uncool, it's cool -- just don't tell anyone."

all this raises the question: will the ribbon crasher follow the same trajectory as the cowbell?

i think it was posted on some web site in kevin's last few months with the band. it was hilarious, even by buzz interview standards. he admitted to stealing some annoying studio techician's guitar.

anyone remember this and can post a link?
