Melvins Discussion / Re: The Tool Influence
April 20, 2008, 11:30:59 PM
10,000  Days sounds absolutely nothing like Tool's previous releases.
to say otherwise shows complete ignorance of the last 16 years of Tool's music.

... It seems like tool did alot of filling in big gaps in this song... does anybody really know who does what?.. besides the drumming.

the electronics could have been done by buzz or adam, as they are the whizkids of Colossus of Destiny (aka Noiseland Arcade).
obviously dale is playing drums in one speaker, and danny carey in the other.
do ya think justin chancellor is playing bass in it? i don't think so.
that could easily be buzz or a melvin on bass.
of course the guitars are a combo of adam recording different guitar tracks, hell buzz might have even thrown in some lead guitar, but overall it's adam's riff prolly.
and last but not least, it could be maynard doing the screaming vocals..i mean... didn't maynard also do the "little pig, little pig, let me in..." line from Green Jelly's 3 Little Pigs?

at the end of Divorced you can hear maynard, and danny or buzz, talking about some shit...

Melvins Show Reviews / Re: October 17th, Austin
April 14, 2008, 03:26:54 PM
this was the show at Emo's right?
i was at that one, i can clearly remember being packed like a sardine inside the tiny covered (WALLED!) patio that the stage is under.
temperatures inside the bldg reached peaks of about 120 F, with sweat pouring down my face, and i was just standing there.
there were so many people there that it was nearly impossible to concentrate on the band, Emo's may not be a good venue for the melvins anymore.
maybe if the damn clubpeople would open up those walls and let some air in the room it wouldn't have been so bad.
still Stubb's BBQ outdoor stage is the BEST venue in Austin.

Melvins Discussion / Re: POLL: which one is adam?

I always assumed Adam just did sort of lead/fill-in stuff here and there. I always thought Buzz did the guitar and the bass on that track. Buzz is credited with playing bass on that album too, isn't he?

so does buzz, that bassline in the 2nd guitar part definitely sounds like buzz on the bass yeah.

i assumed that since adam is listed as a band-member, it is possible that track 4 is the result of a jam session between buzz & adam.
kind of like on divorced where dale crover & danny carey were switching off on the drums, this could be kind of like that, except with an endlessly repeating guitar riff each.

i can usually recognize adam's guitar tone, (you can hear it on Toadi Acceleratio) and the 1st endlessly repeating riff sounds like something adam would have come up with, plus it sounds more like rutmanis on the bass.
so the 2nd riff is buzz on the bass for sure, and the guitar doesn't even sound like adam's style at all.

Glen, thanks to your post,  I decided to throw this one on. I seriously never listen to it, but tonight....I am.

Caped Crusader - I always felt like this song was a little too Tool-ish for me. I mean don't get me wrong, I like Tool, but are we not listening to a Melvins album?  Adam Jones should just keep his riffs in his pants.  It's funny, when all these people go in and "remix" these songs all they really do is fuck with Jello's vocals and try and put some special effect on it so he doesn't sound so...........Jello. Another throwaway in my opinion.

dude, this is like the best song on the record.
overall i thought you did a pretty good review, but on this track you did a terrible job.

Melvins Discussion / POLL: which one is adam?
April 13, 2008, 10:47:06 PM
(this thread is specifically for one song, not an entire album)

track 4 from POTRE (the title track) has only 2 distinct guitar riffs.

the first one begins at 5:57 and ends at 10:33 --- (length:  4:36)
the second one begins at 13:32 and ends at 18:30 --- (length: 4:58)

obviously one is played by adam jones & the other is played by buzz, which one?

i vote:
1st one = adam
2nd one = buzz

PS--++-- if i post this on the POTRE album discussion, nobody will ever reply to it specifically

damn those are ancient

OK - we all know that adam jones (tool) is listed as a member of melvins in the booklet to POTRE, but he obviously doesn't play guitar side by side with buzz every every second of the album.
i have concluded that Toadi Acceleratio is all adam, no buzz.
also adam clearly plays the lead guitar at the end of Pink Bat.
anyway, my question is, on the 20+ minute title track, there are 2 main guitar parts.
i believe that one of them is played by buzz, and the other is played by adam, so which one is which?

IMO, adam plays on the first guitar riff, (then there's like 7 minutes of lustmord) and then buzz plays the 2nd guitar riff.
anyone else have any ideas about this epic masterpiece?

is buzz using a drop B tuning on any of those tracks from the maggot?

sorry i tried posting a longer reply but i had 404 errors and whatnot

All 4 records are classic albums with identities all their own. The time between them helps make them sufficiently disparate.
TOOL is one of the top 7 bands ever...I consider The Beatles, The Who, Stones, Melvins, Nirvana, Rush and TOOL in the group.

what about black sabbath & zeppelin
and floyd?
lmao

I've tried.   and tried.

it just doesn't happen for me.

I hate to pick on such a close friend to Buzz but there is no crunch in the guitars what-so-ever.
its overly technical and void of any personality.

in my opinion.

download "rosetta stoned" by tool.
its kind of a long song, but it's worth it.
