Melvins Discussion / mark d - 5 skull bake
January 19, 2004, 06:58:24 PM
say, does anyone have/could anyone make an mp3 of this song and put it up on the FTP or somewhere? i bought the single a while back, but my turntable is for shit, so i still haven't heard it.

by the way, i'm talking about the mark d. el morocco/5 skull bake single on southern lord from a little while back.

this is an interesting discussion. the way i see it, the melvins sometimes do specific things to elicit different responses rather than just blind adoration for their rock godliness or whatever. i've always felt that they do some things to test people, maybe weed out the idiots who have no patience for noise or craziness. for instance, the noise at the beginning of "magic pig detective," i've played that for people and they just get sick looks on their faces. of course, when the song kicks in, they're like, "whew, what a relief that's over," but i guess i just find it amusing.

it's like the last tour, where they did the "pregnant pause" thing -- i loved looking around the crowd and seeing people's looks of confusion. i guess i admire them for their ability to write insane rock songs and i also admire them for being almost andy kaufman-like in the way they test audiences, the way they look for reactions that aren't your standard, safe "yay! you rock," or whatever. i think it's great that they may (at times) be trying to annoy you, or test your tolerance for eardrum abuse. and then, just as you've had enough, they come back and rock you like a hurricane.

but i do think, too, that they find enjoyment in that. i don't think they're putting out "prick" and not having fun with it. noise is fun to make.

and to the guy who said that thing about people in bands not wanting to confuse or joke around -- i'm in a band, and i've done just that on countless occasions. i've sat in a chair onstage smoking a cigarette while my guitar fed back for ten minutes. why? because i'm interested, much like the melvins probably are, in testing the boundaries, in experimenting. i'm curious to see what happens when people are messed with. and i find it funny.

the melvins, i think, are never just totally trying to fuck you over. shit, prick and COD both have worthy moments of so-called "real" music on them, even. but i do think that not everything they do is meant to please you. some of it is a total challenge. but, i guess, the question is this: do you LIKE to be challenged?

Melvins Discussion / where is mark d?

i got the clown alley album off soulseek. check there.

and i saw mark d play guitar when the melvins did the three-set thing in '96. he blew my mind. he's an insane guitar player -- i mean, he was playing like he was steve vai or something. i then realized that he was the guy playing that crazy guitar solo on the prick album, and i was muy impressed. he's one of my favorite bassists ever, too.

i just hope he makes more music. his first album was very promising. i hope it wasn't his last one.

i really liked his solo album, and i read something about him having a band called the mark d volcano a couple of times, but i'm wondering if anyone knows what he's been up to recently, if anything? i search the internet, and there's just no recent news of any sort.

harvey milk rules. the melvins rule. they are similar only in their awesomeness. oh, and in their affinity for sludge.

but the melvins rule a lot more, i will say that much.
