Melvins Discussion / KING BUZZO'S TOP TEN
May 08, 2004, 07:05:33 PM
As far as you guys go putting down the Sex Pistols, I'm just sorry you missed them.  They were the Beatles of punk.  Music was going through a horrible phase.  There was almost nothing you could listen to.  They busted open a whole new type of music that most of the world coudn't stand, to say the least.  You have no idea what their impact was to those of us listening.  Without them, there would be no Melvins, Black Flag, or most of the bands we listen to now.  It was one of those few times in history where a band really did make a difference and changed the whole music scene.

I know the album doesn't sound as powerful now as it was then, but I still have more respect for their music and what they did than any other band I've ever heard.

God Save The Queen!

Sorry man, nothing against you and I'm not trying to put you down in any way, but it actually comes from the song "Almost Cut My Hair" by CSNY in 1970 (written by David Crosby).  He sang "feel like letting my freak flag fly".  The album was Deja vu.  I don't know, but it's possible he got the line from somewhere else before he wrote the song.  Of course, he's always been so stoned I doubt that he can remember lyrics from other peoples songs.

If I knew as much about other things as I do about music, I'd be a millionare.

All this shit is just stuck in my brain!

Thanks man.  I know that there's no way I could ever own everything the Melvins have put out.  Well, maybe if Buzz became my personal slave.  Call me pessimistic, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

BTW, do you know where your signature comes from?  I'm guessing you do.

No, I don't NEED it, and I won't kill myself if I don't have it, but if I could get it at a resonable ($30 tops) price it would be cool.  I have a pretty large collection of CD's & vinyl and some of them are what I consider "collectables".  I just enjoy having that kind of stuff, especially from one of my favorite bands.  I've been into (sometimes obsessed by) music for close to 40 years now.  Music has always been a large part of my life.  I've tried playing guitar but my fingers don't do what my mind wants them to.  I have to admire musicians from the sidelines, which is fine except when music starts to suck, which happens fairly often.  Hairbands?  Frigging Coldplay?  Fleetwood Mac?  Eric Clapton?  Give me a break!

Am I making sense?  I don't want to sound like an idiot.

I've been looking for the original Lysol for a while now.  Some places say they have it but it turns out to just be the newer "Melvins" cover.

Anyone know where I could get a copy at a decent price?

Yeah, I have the hardback version and it definately smells like paint.  It's probably the ink.

Nobody has ever mentioned the quality of the paper though.  It's very thick, strong, kind of like card stock if you're familar with that.  There are times I open it just to admire the paper.  No, it's not a fetish, I just really admire their choice of paper.  It makes the book all that more impressive!

I wish I could same the same for the cover & binding.  I worry that it will start to fall apart if I look at it too often.

Is anybody able to compare the quality of the hardback with the paperback?  I guess you'd need to either have both versions of the book or know someone with the version you don't have and look at them side by side.

I'll tell you though, $60, at the show, almost killed me.

Melvins Discussion / How you knew The Melvins?

What year was it?  93 or 94?  I had tickets to see L7 at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz and the Melvins were one of the opening bands.  I had only heard of them, not heard their music.  Houdini had just come out so I bought it a couple weeks before the show to check out their music.  I HATED it!

They blew me away at the show and I guess "got it" right away.  Never looked back.

Tower Records has it for $12.99.  The web site says it's out of print but I got my copy in 3 days!  Shipping is free if your order is $20 or more.

This whole thing is pissing me off.  I don't see any messages about  a Sonic Youth/Melvins collaboration here.  Mostly just a bunch of bitching about how Kurt's music sucked and he doesn't deserve any recognation for his music.

NONE of us is a music expert, except to ourselves, and the the music we personally like.  Don't pretend you are and try to convince other people that your opinion the only one that's right.
