Melvins Discussion / Re: The longest Melvins songs
« on: September 17, 2022, 06:58:20 PM »
Since the Joe Preston EP was released prior, I’ve often wondered if Hands First Flower influenced the droning, doom sounds of Lysol. Hung Bunny / Roman Bird Dog have always sounded (to me) like an extension of Joes idea. Does anyone have any more info on that? Did that genre even exist before Joe laid this long-ass, heavy song to tape?

Before the Joe Preston EP you basically had the first Earth EP and demos as far as drone/doom goes but the band's sound that early on bordered on being really slow noise rock if anything. But Joe was in the band at that time too.

Couple things I noticed:

See How Pretty and Moon Pie are actually under ten minutes. They both have bits of silence (See How Pretty is about six minutes, Moon Pie about seven) before a hidden "bonus track" pops up. Depends on if the silence counts. If so the last song on Honky at nearly 30 minutes is a shoo-in.

There's also the acoustic Halo of Flies which is over ten minutes.

Colossus is a weird one. On one hand it's a live recording so in the context of this thread it shouldn't really count but in another sense it literally is it's own weird entity that could be the exception to the rule. If it counts then by default the longest Melvins composition at about close to 50 minutes, excluding Eye Flys obviously.

Melvins Discussion / Re: Melvins Videos Thread (and much more)
« on: September 11, 2022, 04:49:21 PM »
Digging into that video a bit and some thoughts...

- That live version of Sacrifice sounds closer to the version that was recorded on Hot Fish (Yecch!) and I don't like the more up-tempo version of Sacrifice at all. I can see the overplaying a bit. I actually didn't mind it in 2018 with "Eye Flys" but they also had Pinkus to bounce off as well.
- On that note imagine if they did the Endless Residency sets with Steven.
- A History of Bad Men is weird with Steven leading vocally, like he can get loud enough for the key parts but his voice isn't "deep" enough like Jared's to make it work. At least Dale is absolutely killing it on that song.
- Charlie is kind of tiresome to hear and feels weirdly out of place, but I get it on account of a song from one of Steven's bands. Begs the question if Pinkus stayed around for the long haul, would we be saying "I don't want to hear Graveyard anymore."?
- Mister Dog is Totally Right rules at the very least.
- Can confirm Steven was kind of reigned in for OFF! but it's hard to be an over the top showman when all of your songs are a minute each and the band has a definitive lead singer.

I like Steven as a bassist and he just strikes me as this antsy, weirdo dude but I can understand his goofy personality and showman live persona being off-putting. Then again the BB lineup did add their own bits of silliness to some older songs too.

A friend of mine texted me and asked if I was seeing them in town on the 22nd and told him I'm missing it due to work. Seen em' in Covington and that's good enough for this year, really. Not the hat trick I was expecting with missing them in my hometown the last three years they've been here but I'll roll with it, I suppose.

sheesh, don't know if thats enough to see them a 4th time this year, especially when it involves a 3 hour drive.

It'd be a 3 hour drive for me too as Columbus is the only date I can make. I work til' 10PM the night they're in town and I doubt I can get a day shift and then drive two hours immediately to Indy that next day. It'd be cool to see them play Lovely Butterfly and Little Judas Chongo for sure, but I think I got my one this year (Covington as support for Ministry).

The real hot take? Not one song from Houdini or Stoner Witch. I dig.

Not gonna lie Im digging the weird air of mystery to this release. It's a change of pace from the usual on-the-nose pre-planned fare.

The bad mood rising was the shoxop orders we missed along the way.

Also, hot take: I dig this whole super limited deal, actually. It's almost like a reverse of an album getting leaked on the net or I'd even compare it to a Magic pre-release. Getting something early that so few have...

I had a dream last night the album was 29 minutes and that brought me joy.

Someone also told me it was too short and I said "so listen to it twice."

The only thing that has me doubting is the time frame. In ALL the recent Melvins albums they have been announced almost exactly 3 months before they came out. Even the new Dead Cross one has been too. To see Ipecac not even mention Bad Mood Rising yet and for it to come out in just 4 weeks or so seems totally implausible. Maybe they were going to announce it in August and Haze fucked up by mentioning it.

I went back and seen their next tour is in early September so the album would make it in time for that if it does drop later next month. There's also the possibility the album could drop later and copies available on tour before the proposed release date. I've seen that happen with a few bands in the past.

Definitely would be a new spin on old tricks and give the new album a more personal feel if you got it earlier than trying to order from Ipecac or whereever.

I'm a firm believer that the artist determines what is an Album or EP and not the listener. There's too many bizarre examples I could pick at that haven't been mentioned already.

That said, I'm down for a Lysol-length Melvins album in 2022 as long as it's packed in with goodness. All killer, no filler as they say.

New Melvins drops in late August but a haze edition is coming a few weeks earlier.

Only just seen Senile Animal has been finally repressed here and luckily I got an order in for it. Any issues with it this time.

It sounds great. All the tracks are even there too!

Stump Farmer is good.
Bunk Up might be the best song on Hold It In
A Friend in Need is hilarious.
That Dale track is okay.
