the melvins got real good after ozma

is anybody here of the opinion...that the melvins got real good after ozma - i.e. with the release of bull 'ead.

I just listened to eggnog for the first time recently and fuck its good - 'like stee, moanin' ludlow!'. I only got GPT and Ozma recently too - and now i have everything from GPT to the cis anybody here of the opinion...rybaby except prick - woohoo!

Yeah, I'll agree with you on that one, but that's primarily because I'm not too fussed about Ozma and love Bullhead/Eggnog. Mind you, I still think that their Atlantic period was possibly their most fertile but this might be down to Mark Deutrom...

Thinking about it, the Melvins since ditching Mark have released COD (some might argue, another Prick), Electroretard, GPT and 26 Songs (all rereleases in some form), leaving only handful of original material...

Bootlicker is so awesome.  It's pretty straight-up but still includes a few bizzare experimental moments as well, (like the cat sounds) and "We We."
The Melvins could probably even release a country album and still end up making it sound good.

Yes, I will agree with this but, I really like GPT and Ozma; their is talent and creativity in these two releases. I love the sound of these two albums and I wish they would release another album like them. I continue to listen to them to this day. I have not found any other group that has a similar sound on these albums.

I really like Ozma. There is some amazing stuff on there. Maybe the production doesn't quite stand up to today's sound but I have been listening to it for so many years that it doesn't bother me.

As much as I like early Melvins, including the Mangled Demos, their sound did improve greatly with Bullhead/Eggnog/Lysol. The Atlantic albums(Stag in particular) and the Ipecac originals(particularly Maggot, Bootlicker, and HAT) are damned amazing. Hell, COD is a step up from Prick(IMHO) and I would like it a lot more if it were about twenty minutes shorter. It is rare to see a band evolve after the ten year mark, let alone twenty. They continue to build on their patented sound all the while taking chances. These guys could have stayed on course and dished out the sludge time and time again to the loyal devotees but they didn't, godblessem.  

One thing really noticeable in their evolution though is Buzz's vocals. He really seems like he is straining there on the early material. With the Atlantic albums, it seems like he started shooting steroids into his vocal chords. His voice became just as large as the music. Three cheers for the King's vocals!
