I'm restless so I'll step out of my lurking.  I've noticed that a lot of folks here are talking about how buzz's guitar tone sounds different (less pleasing to most) on the last two albums.  I've picked up on this live an on the records.  So I'm trowing my two cents in on a new thread.  What the hell I'm sure many of us are tone nerdy enough to get into a discussion about this stuff without it being tucked away under other discussions.  I'd like to hear you guys talk about not just the issue i just mentioned but anything tone wise regarding shows albums specific songs, whatever.  I'm a nerd about this sort of stuff.  When I was younger I used to try to identify what songs Jimmy Page was using a telecaster on.  The point wasn't being right, just scratching the itch.

So, do you guys hear a hint of blue box on the noise from Charmicarmicat?

Did you guys notice a distinct change in sound on the first big biz tour and were surprised to look down and not see a Rat on the floor?

How much do you think that affects the 'new' guitar tone?  Boss fizzies?

I'm curious to hear drum nerds too.

I also really dug Jared's bass tone the first time I saw him(06-Ashville- seemed to be playing a cheap black squier with the tone rolled off) but less so the second time (07-Knoxville- a nice fender sunburst that "[was] fucked!").

I'm not that worried about better versus worse, but I will say the guitars from H.A.T. are one of my top 5 guitar tone favorites.

If this goes anywhere I might add more opinions.

i perferred the tone on stoner witch. mark had the best bass sound too.

Anyone got an idea what songs on NWB Buzz used a Telecaster on?
Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt.

Centripetal core of soul sojourn the field vibrates to absolution. I climb toward the sun to breathe the universal.

Have you seen the bridge?  I ain't seen the bridge!  Where's that confounded bridge?!

in my opinion he used a Telecaster only when he did overdubs, but maybe i'm wrong and he used a Telecaster both on Billy Fish both on  SIP.speaking of live show yep ,Buzzo's guitar tone has changed a little, believe principally he doesn't use the rat pedal as he did before.btw,Buzzo's guitar tone from Lysol is my favourite.my favourite Dale's drum sound is from Lysol too (the snare drum's sound is taken from Bohnam's snare drum on Led Zeppelin's Houses of the holy).obviously i love Dale's sound also on Stoner Witch and on Stag, believe Stoner Witch got the best drum sound in the history of music :).speaking of bass players, never seen a show with Jared, listening to the audio recording,or video recording,i noticed his sound is perfect with Big Biz where there isn't guitar or where it isn't predominant, but with the Melvins his sound is a little full of treble so it's also a little bit confused with Buzzo's guitar tone.anyway,i love his style and sound, although my favourite sound is Mark Deutrom's,who also is my favourite bass player.

After what you guys have been saying, I really need to go back and listen to Stoner Witch again.  I remember liking the sound of it but its never been a favorite musically so I haven't stuck with it too much.  Lysol is very pleasing on the ear.

I think my issue with Jared is the difference between how he sounds on the first versus the second big biz records.  I agree that he fills in the meat in the two piece but I can't argue too much about him blending in with Buzz as H.A.T. is like that a lot and i really like the effect.  But I guess not all the time.

I was also curious about the alternate guitars on NWB.  I think I read that he used the 69 les paul "throughout" leading me to believe that the others were here and there parts.  I've mostly listened to the album before going to bed with headphones so I can't name specific parts but you can definitely notice from time to time that there is something else going on with the treble and high end on the leadish parts.     Though, I can't tell if that's just the different production or guitars.  Assuming the tele is single coil and the silvertone is too, this would make a lot of sense.  Of course we'll never know.

I have a new theory after the other day that alot of these song definitely are classic rock sounding but this trait is accentuated by the guitar tone.  I don't think a lot of these new songs are too far off from songs they have scattered accross other albums but  their differences are made more dramatic by the new sounds.  Just imagine Kicking Machine with lysol tone.  It would be weird but not as Rushy as people say.  (this is all hypothetical, I don't think the sound should actually have been done with different tone.)

Just a passing idea.

I don't get why people don't like the guitar sounds on the last two records. I think it sounds awesome. Someone recently said "ball bearings in a box". WTF? I don't think so.  And why would Buzz want to use the same exact gear/tones over and over? He's King Buzzo, not Angus Young.  It's like the Frank Zappa fans who say every solo he played post '70s sucks because it's not on an SG or Strat going through a Pignose or Mutron pedal.

I really like Jared's tone on NWB, slightly better than on ASA. Just listen to The Smiling Cobra over and over. Pure power.

This thread is definitely for anal guitar geeks.

I never said I didn't like any of it.  I just think its fun to guess about this and that.  I am not disappointed with my Melvins music or live experiences.  I just get bored and think about this stuff because I like to play guitar when I have a chance and its fun to nerd out.

thats where dc keeps em!

Ya thanks for putting them there! My tone has never been warmer!

I like the sound he got on the first record - probably played an old peavy with holes in the speakers.
