It has a seperate left and right mic built in, and the camera can record the audio in 5.1 surround.  So if someone behind me to my left yells, it comes out of the rear left speaker of my surround sound.

Excellent..that explains it.
I've been using the same Sony ECM-909 mic for 20 years now and it never ceases to amaze me.
